Plus he was better last year and in college, which means he can hit them at a higher clip. I think we should just consider it a bad year for him from the stripe and see what happens next year. The kid isn't short on work ethic, so I have to assume he'll be working on free throws this summer, among other things.

It would be perfectly fine with me if he just works on his free throw stroke and doesn't dribble around a single trashcan or shoot over a single outstretched broom all summer

Considering how much better he shot the ball from mid-range this year, maybe he should shoot over more brooms!

:chuckles:

They should hand out brooms to everyone in the section behind the basket at Cavs games and they can wave them frantically whenever Dion's shooting.

LMAO That was so WEIRD!!!!! What kind of Mickey Mouse trainer does he have??

Dion's ability to shoot high arching shots without separation from a defender is what can make him such a valuable player in the playoffs when the lanes close up and the easy shots disappear. His FG% for shots in the 16-23 ft range is actually quite good in comparison to other SG and PG in the NBA. Those are the types of shots teams need to be able to make in the playoffs when D tightens up.

So, yes continue working on those free throws Dion, but never give up the over the broomstick Chuck Ellis specials

Dion's bigger problem is that he didn't get to the line enough. He could definitely could be better from the stripe but what's holding him up from being an elite guard is lack of trips to start with.

He was given open jumpers. He took them and made them. I ain't even mad. He was smart enough to not force things. I'll take that any day over Alonzo Gee-esque barreling into the lane for a turnover.

Also worth noting that, because he is a bit undersized for his position, those high arcing shots are beneficial in that they are tougher for a bigger defender to block or alter.

Waiters finished the season at 43.3% from the field. I'll take that from my second-year two-guard any day. I would say he had a better year than Beal, his main comparison and a guy drafted a spot ahead of him.

He made a mini-leap to close out the year. Hopefully he can sustain that into next season.

If we were winning more games and Dion was playing solid defense, I would be content with his post All-Star break numbers from here on out.

Zach Lowe giving Waiters some love in his column from today:

29. Dion Waiters’s Jumper

There are still issues with Waiters’s shot selection, especially when he pulls up for long 2s early in the shot clock. But he shot much better from long range this season, and there were games in the second half of the season where he looked unstoppable for long stretches. And, man, does that jumper look wet when it’s on. Waiters arcs that baby so high, increasing the likelihood of a pure swish. How high? On long 2-pointers, no player’s shot trajectory reaches a higher average peak, per SportVU data provided to Grantland; Waiters’s average long 2 tops out at 15.6 feet above the ground. And on 3s, only four players reach a higher peak than Waiters’s average of 16.5 feet above the floor: Jamal Crawford, Jordan Crawford, Dirk Nowitzki, and Jeremy Lin. The thing just looks pretty.

Suck it, broom doubters!

Edit: Also, Nathan, I expect an apology letter signed by you and sent to Chuck Ellis. :chuckles:

This summer I'd like Chuck Ellis to set up in the paint with a shorter broom so that Waiters can start workiing on some alternatives to getting blocked at the rim. I'd like to see some YouTube videos this summer of floaters, teardrops, bank-shots, pull-ups and other additions to his arsenal. This is not as important as other things, like staying aggressive, hitting his FTs, and not settling for long-twos in the wrong situations, but I'm interested in how his game may expand.

I thought his progress on defense this year was just as noticeable as his improved shooting. Despite what Jason Lloyd wrote on multiple occasions, he looked more than competent at times, even if consistency was an issue.

And I'm most surprised that Dion pouted, got benched, was rumored to get traded multiple times, generated one of the best off-court rumors (punching Kyrie), and ended up the season as a player who gained more respect in the locker room, garnered more praise from the fanbase by year's end, and managed to improve in measurable ways during the course of a challenging season. Good for him.

I guess that means he'll get traded before next season. :chuckles:

I'd be happy with those numbers too. Those are Monta Ellis numbers. I suspect some will be let down as they think a number 4 pick should produce more, and others will think that undersells his potential.

Obviously like to see the 71% be up at least around 76%. But 19 points a game on 46% shooting is, compared to the other players in that draft, not bad at all.
