Dolan: Tribe will lose 16 million this year

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
How Dolan answered made some sense for the most part. This statement I did not like though:

""We will look at everything at the end of the season," said Dolan. "But we have to look at the full body of work. If you look at the last four seasons, we're fifth in the American League in wins, just behind the major markets. That's a significant accomplishment in today's baseball economy"

What makes the difference how many total wins you have over 4 years? I don't get that. It seems to me to be making excuses and finding the right stat to make a point. Isn't it a fact that the number of playoff years is what's important? Maybe I'm wrong, but just looking at the number of wins doesn't do justice. We went to the playoffs one time and then choked away a 3=1 lead. The other seasons we were not really close. Each year the team starts off badly, which seems to be a lack of spring training preparedness, and getting ready for the start of the season.

Um..

The Yankees are in New York City.. The Indians in Cleveland, Ohio.. MAJOR difference..

The Yankees also make enough money on their TV network to cover damn near their entire payroll, so barely any money for the payroll actually comes out of the owner's pocket..

Also.. when your payroll is middle of the pack, but your team isn't winning and attendance is down near the bottom of the league for 2 straight years, you're going to retool a lil bit.. it only makes sense

Don't matter the Indians in the 90's were nuts. I would see Tribe gear everywhere.

Just like now, I see Cavs gear. The whole small market team is flawed because there's a shit ton of bandwagon fans that rode Jacob's Indians' dicks in the 90's.

I'm absolutely loving the way the NBA is run these days. Between the steroid allegations/big market jumping in the uncapped MLB and ridiculousness of the rookie salary negotiations in the NFL, the NBA offseason runs so smoothly. I'm not a huge Stern fan, but you have to give it to him on this one.

I just hope the new CBA negotiations don't lead to a lockout because of the state of the economy.

"If every four or five years we can have a shot at the World Series like we did in 2007. And compete for a playoff spot like we did in 2005, that's as good as it gets in this market."

So we have an owner that is satisfied with having a SHOT at the world series twice a decade. It's a good thing I'm still in my early 20s....this could take awhile.

Until the system changes anyway.

There are many more teams who have no shot at a world series in two or three decades...

This is all the more reason to find a taker for Pavano before he reaches his incentives.

Probably should have included "Have an ERA Below 84" in the incentives

It's not flawed and it does matter. Even in the 90's the Indians lagged well behind the Yankees in terms of revenue. The Indians led MLB in gate revenue and Tribe gear was close to the Yankees at one point, but TV money was $20MM for the Indians and $100MM for the Yankees.

Also, the Indians payroll hit a peak under Dolan, not Jacobs. Ol' Dick may not have been the best owner in Cleveland sports history, but he was the smartest. He bought low and sold high -- knowing that the '95-'99 run could not continue and the bigger markets would eventually get our players.

Dolan paid $320MM for this club and he's losing $16MM? Bad, very bad.

To expect anyone to lose that kind of money indefinitely is not realistic, but "fan" is a derivative of the word "fanatic" and no fan wants to admit his franchise is always going to be at a disadvantage to the likes of the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, etc.

At least we are in a division without such teams. It would suck much more to be Toronto or Tampa Bay or the B.O's.

People whining about Dolan either are too young to remember the horrible ownership in the 70's or have forgotten. The Tribe back then made horrible trades even before there was free agency.

The trouble started with Jacobs getting Dolan to pay top dollar for the franchise back when all the plus factors were maxed out and could only go down.

Dolan made several bold statements about multiple titles when he took over that look really asinine now.

He has presided over the team during a time when the Cleveland area has lost the highest % of population for cities of comparable size in the USA. The local economy is horrendous.

Then Dolan has lost almost every major star that has been on the team and gotten back very little for them. Fans didn't come out in 2007 until late in the season because, even back then, Dolan had antagonized the fan base. Then you throw in the return of the Browns and the rise of the Cavs with Lebron. So for the fans, why waste time watching and paying for the Tribe?

I don't believe most of the small/middle market teams made too many millions season to season. Most owners are well enough off that it isn't a prime consideration. If they want to get the big return , it normally comes when the team is sold. But that can't happen with the Tribe . If Dolan is trying to ride out this economic downturn thinking the franchise will slowly revive to get back to a value even close to what he paid, much less make a profit, than Cleveland Indian fans are doomed to many seasons of a crummy product.

The Cavs are in Cleveland, Ohio.. and they top the charts.

I wonder how they accomplish that....

Even when the Tribe had Manny, Thome, Kenny, Sandy, etc, the team or any of the individuals were far from big names nationally, even among baseball fans. The Florida- Cleveland World Series still ranks among the lowest viewed post season finales of all time.

You could have got more of a buzz from a bottle of 3.2 beer.
