Indians expected to trade Martinez
By Buster Olney
ESPN The Magazine

Now that the Indians have traded Cliff Lee, rival executives fully expect Cleveland to deal All-Star catcher Victor Martinez in the 48 hours before the trade deadline.

MLB Rumor Central
ESPN Insider has the updated buzz from the Major League Baseball rumor mill.
Story Insider

"I don't think they'd move one without thinking about moving the other," said an AL official.

The Indians had indicated to other teams for weeks that they would have to be overwhelmed in a deal for either Lee or Martinez, because they considered both players to be crucial to their chances for contending in 2010, at reasonable salaries. But with some sources indicating that Cleveland is under pressure to cut payroll, the Indians dealt Lee, who will earn $8 million for next season.

And Martinez could be next to go. Martinez, 30, is hitting .283 this season, with 15 homers and 67 RBIs, with an on-base percentage of .367. Martinez represented the Indians at the All-Star Game in St. Louis earlier this month.

The switch-hitter is earning $4.45 million this year, and he is set to earn $7 million for next year, through an option.

The Boston Red Sox have had extensive talks with the Indians about Martinez, and even after acquiring Adam LaRoche from the Pittsburgh Pirates last week, they still have interest -- although it is not exactly clear how the Red Sox would squeeze in playing time for all the players who would be affected by a trade for Martinez, most notably third baseman Mike Lowell.

The Texas Rangers and Detroit Tigers have also been talking with other teams about acquiring a hitter.

And just caught this...Although who knows how credible this jackass is.

Re: Indians to trade Victor?

i could really see Victor going to Tampa Bay because they want to make a run and they know if Victor goes to Boston they're done

Re: Indians to trade Victor?

Victor needs to go now. Sucks because he's been one of my favorite Indians for years and I remember tracking his minor league career where he would always rake. Hopefully we get something better than we did in the Lee deal...

Re: Indians to trade Victor?

For Victor we could probably get Wade Davis and two prospects that are farther away from the bigs.

Re: Indians to trade Victor?

I knew Victor had a really team-friendly contract, but damn, only 4.5 million this season and 7 next season. That has to be one of the biggest steals in baseball.

It is going to be VERY sad for me to see him go, but there is no point in keeping him now.

I will never forget seeing him standing in the dugout crying when we lost to the Red Sox. You gotta love a player that truly cares about winning.

This sucks. I never really liked Lee after he tipped his hat to the crowd for booing him in 2007 because he was so terrible that season. It was just a prick move, he deserved to be booed.

CC got booed last season and he said he deserved to be booed and that he would boo too. That is how a professional should handle it.

So it wasn't too bad for me to see Lee go because I have never really liked him even though he has been great the past 2 seasons. Seeing Vic leave will be hard though.

Re: Indians to trade Victor?

Victor will be hard to see leave because he is the Indians...on the other hand, he could bring us back that close to the majors FOR, and we need that desperately now.

Agree, I was just going to edit my post and say he is the face of the Indians IMO.

We basically have to trade him though. There doesn't really seem to be much of an option.

If nobody offers anything solid though, we could hold onto him and trade him in the offseason or any time during the season and hope for something better.

Either way, he is a goner sooner or later.

Re: Indians to trade Victor?

It would be great to see him on the Rays. Joe Maddon is an old school guy who would absolutely love a guy like Victor on his team. I absolutely agree with everyone here who would be devastated to see Victor go. He's a great ball player and he gave it his all here. Like Gimme Some Mo said, he truly cares about winning and he deserves to go to a contender. I'm an Indians fan first, but I would definately be pulling for the Rays to make a push back to the World Series if they traded for Victor.

Re: Indians to trade Victor?

No way they deal Beckham... He's the future at SS there to team up with Longoria to form a dominant strong side of the infield... Uproar in Tampa if that happened...

Perhaps Davis is gettable.. Plus, the Tribe needs to get as much pitching as they can...

That's funny. That's one of the reasons that I really liked Lee. He had a chip on his shoulder and played angry. For some athletes, that is when they play best. He also wasn't afraid to deliver a little "chin music".

I also loved when he threw his glove in the crowd.

I really hate baseball now.

Yea.. I was just about to say. He was picked #1 overall in the draft last year, he's not leaving.

You're absolutely right PIP. There's no way they trade Beckham. The kid is 19 and was the number 1 overall pick in last years draft. It would be like asking for David Price. Tampa would laugh their asses off and have the phone off the hook in a second.
