Re: 17th Pick - Tyler Zeller

Well, all we can do is wait and see. Let's just say (for now) i expect us to have a top 3 pick again next year.

and, had cleveland traded 4 draft picks whatever else for #2, where would they be picking?

Re: 17th Pick - Tyler Zeller

Draft Express says there is every reason to believe you are wrong:

---
He connected on half of those attempts, albeit in a very limited sample size, and looks like he should become a reliable shooter out to about eighteen feet or so in time. He shot an excellent 81% from the free throw line this season, has solid mechanics, and a quick release, which all bode well for his potential to space the floor and pick-and-pop as he gets more comfortable with his jumper.

Fuck draft express, I watched him play every game of his UNC career.

Its not that his mechanics are messed up, I watched him be spoon fed mid range jumpers in perfect spots that he never looked at the rim and attempted to shoot. He doesnt feel comfortable taking those. He's programmed to catch it there, look for a wing, and set a pick on air instead of on a body.

He's light years better than his freshman year, but still not even half of the player Tyler Hansbrough was for us.

And Tyler Hansbrough leads the goddamn ACC in scoring for history along with being the "ACC Player of the Year" (whatever that means in the grand scheme of being a starter or better in the NBA), and HE is a career backup.

(takes a deep breath)

And I like Tyler Zeller. By all accounts he along with Barnes were good quiet mentors for Hairston and McAdoo. Ive read reports that said that knuckleheads like Henson, Marshall, Bullock and Strick and McDonald were wildly inconsistent with their approach to the game and we would have underachieved more had it not been for Barnes and Zeller both approaching the game like pros.

But I still see him as a reserve for a serious contender

Re: 17th Pick - Tyler Zeller

Why is anyone grading this draft based on the notion that we will be drafting top5 in next years draft.

We NEED to be drafting top 5 in next years draft.

We would have been drafting in the 4-8 range in next years draft regardless of what player(s) we drafted this year.

That should have no bearing whatsoever on how we judge this years draft.

In Durant and Jeff Green's second year, which was Westbrook's first year, OKC was horrible. Like started off something like 3-29 horrible. No one freaked out. Durant didn't sour on the franchise.

I hope to see excitement next year. Fast paced offense. Kyrie and Dion breaking guys down. Major development from TT and Gee. Zeller doing what he does well. Be it still fully expect to lose 54+ games. And we need to. We need one more lottery pick. One more year of growth from the young guys.

Re: 17th Pick - Tyler Zeller

I think we're going to have a lot of fun comparing Zeller to JV in coming years, and at this point I see no reason Zeller won't more than hold his own due to his maturity/experience. But I wasn't convinced JV had unbound upside.

Re: 17th Pick - Tyler Zeller

I'm perfectly fine with that, though I believe he can be a high level reserve or a good rotational big. We drafted him at 17. Anyone at 24, 33, or 34 would be expected to be a reserve as well.

We have as many as 4 more 1st rd picks and 4 more 2nd rd picks in the next two drafts, so no one should fret over the lost quantity of reserve level picks we used to grab him.

I like the niche that Zeller fills and am happy to get him on the team

Exactly. Who cares if he ends up being a rotational big. I would like him to be more than that, but if he isn't, that is fine. Every team needs one, so I will be very happy if we got a good one at 17.

Re: 17th Pick - Tyler Zeller

Not sure I understand why you think we gave up 3 picks. We picked for each other at 17 and 24, and gave up our two 2nd rounders. We went into the draft with 4 picks, came away with 2 guys. Simple math. And we got Keleeeena to boot. He'll be decent off the bench.

I like the move for Zeller. He'll grow with our other young guys, and be very serviceable in the future. Especially with Detroit and Boston getting huge frontcourts. We'll need bigs to compete in the East. I firmly believe he'll be better than the big V in Toronto. He is such a wildcard...and is not something I want to bank the future on.

Zeller runs the floor. Thompson and AV do too. We will be a quick transition team while we add components to compete in 2 or 3 years.

It's arguable that Zeller could have started at C for the final 4 in the playoffs this year (obv. moving Bosh/KG back to PF).

Re: 17th Pick - Tyler Zeller

I loved it when I heard we traded for Zeller. He is the perfect complement to Tristan. Zeller is an underrated offensive center, IMO.

I agree, if he turns into a Brook Lopez, would anyone be mad?

Re: 17th Pick - Tyler Zeller

So what does this pick say about TT ? Does this mean the #4 pick has already been typecast as a defensive role player ?

Does this mean we don't expect him to develop offensively ? If all the post touches are going to Zeller, when does TT get a chance to work on his game ?

But that doesn't mean they'd actually be better, which is what matters.

We are allowed to have more than one good/developing post player on the team....

Is Kyrie not going to develop because Waiters is here? No....

In fact Zeller is exactly what TT needs to develop MORE QUICKLY...Zeller will open up the lanes on offense so TT can operate on the blocks, fight for o-boards, etc. Zeller is also a solid passer and I'm sure he will be able to find TT moving on backdoor cuts and whatnot.

Agree but for me there's much more than that. It will be kind of interesting to compare Thompson, Zeller & Waiters to JV, T. Robinson, P. Jones, Q. Miller & D. Lamb--all players on the board and all who the Cavs could have had.

I hope Zeller is this great consistent perimeter shooter some are making him out to be. I just don't see it. He can do it occasionally but I wouldn't count on it all the time each game.

Re: 17th Pick - Tyler Zeller

Stop it with this PJ3 this and that. PJ3 is a bad basketball player, and even though I dislike Zeller you take him over PJ3 everyday of the week. One will be a solid player for 10-15 years, one will be out of the league in 3 because he doesn't care about basketball.

Re: 17th Pick - Tyler Zeller

Off topic of Zeller but on topic of comparisons, they mentioned on the radio last night that Irving/Waiters and Wall/Beal will be fun to watch, and I agree.
