Re: Tyler Zeller: CHOCOLATE SNOW !!!

I haven't given up on him but he needs a lot of improvement to ever be some type of a piece on a possible contender. I just don't see with his personality that he's every going to be a physical presence or play tough inside. Right now I can't stand Zeller and hate watching him play. Says something when even Austin Carr repeatedly questions and criticizes Zeller. Cavs broadcasts aren't exactly known for their criticism.
A question could be raised as to why Grant felt the need to trade up for Zeller if he's only projected to be a career backup?

Probably because he projected the rest of the draft to be crap. Was right so far. (That's coming from a guy who raged about the trade on draft day :chuckles:)

Or maybe because Grant seen characteristics in Zeller (great work ethic, good overall person, good motor) that say that he will attempt to improve his game. A 7 footer who is willing to put in the work and improve on his game sounds great, especially for a late first and a couple second rounders. Other than Tristan, Zeller is the one guy on this team that I am 100% confident will be in the gym working his ass off this summer. He'll pack some muscle on improving his defense, make his jumper an actual threat, and will still be able to run the floor like a perimeter player.

The main things he needs to work on are defense, muscle gain, and jump shooting. I know that a lot of people will disagree with me here, but he has shown a lot potential on defense. He has had some great blocks this season, and never really looks "lost" like Tristan did last season or J.J did his whole career. That alone is GREAT for a rookie big. It's just a matter of being over-powered right now. Which coincides with his second need, muscle gain. That left hook of his would be so much easier if he could actually get position down low. There is absolutely no doubt that we would see an immediate improvement on offense and defense if he gained 10-15 pounds of muscle. He'd be a different player. Finally, his jump-shooting. Again, Zeller seems like that type of guy who will put in so much work in the off-season. I know everybody is concentrating on the development of Tristan's jumper, but I feel like Zeller is going to come back next season with a deadly mid range. It'll be on every team's scouting report. And we've seen glimpses Zeller's ability to pump fake and put the ball on the floor when defenders play his jumper too tightly. Make he and Tristan will work on it together.

Zeller has had some rookie moments this season, like today against Philly for example. But he has also had some great moments as well. That's what rookies do. As long as they can show glimpses of potential, it's a successful rookie season. So I consider Zeller's rookie season successful.

Long-winded rant of much needed optimism is almost over.

Zeller's ceiling isn't a decent bench big. His basement is a decent bench big, and he's already there.

Now it's over.

Re: Tyler Zeller: CHOCOLATE SNOW !!!

I think my biggest problem with Zeller is that he doesn't even attempt to act like a man out there. He is the guy on the first night in prison that would be content to be everyone's girl because he can't be bothered to fight anyone off.

He is 23 years old and played 4 years at a blue chip college.

If he hasn't been interested in getting his body together and toughening up until now, why should we believe it will all the sudden be different going forward.

He isn't an 18/19 year old kid that still is growing into their frame. He is supposed to be a man by now.

Re: Tyler Zeller: CHOCOLATE SNOW !!!

Chris Mihm averaged 7.6 pts, 4.7 reb., and shot 44.2% in just under 20 minutes a game as a Cavs rookie while also showing some flashes and signs of being a solid skilled C.
Before today Zeller was averaging 8.1 pts, 5.8 reb, and is shooting 44.2% while playing over 26 minutes a game. Those numbers will dip after today's 76ers game.

Think it was MYoung who a while back made the Zeller/Mihm comparison. Looks pretty valid unless Zeller takes a major step forward in the coming seasons. Mihm was also younger at 21 his rookie season.

Zeller also has a thin frame, has had trouble adding weight, and has shown no signs of having a tough physical personality.

Re: Tyler Zeller: CHOCOLATE SNOW !!!

"Trouble adding weight" is a farce, if he wants to add weight, he will, under an NBA quality fitness instructor.

I never thought I could add weight either until I learned what it took.

GOMAD or go home.

Fucking thank you! No sport but bodybuilding really requires that a man reaches his genetic potential in terms of musculature. If you eat and lift right, you can pretty much hit whatever weight you want within reason. Obviously a 180lb guard isn't going to hit 300lbs anytime soon, but even a 210lb center can hit 250-260 if he wants to.

I remember my GOMAD days. I drank 1 5/8ths gallons (214.4oz) of whole milk a day for a long time, and it worked wonders for me. I didn't necessarily have the leanest gains at first, but it all worked out well in the end. There's healthier stuff though than GOMAD.

Re: Tyler Zeller: CHOCOLATE SNOW !!!

Time to relax people. He wasn't drafted to be the starter, nor was he drafted for what he was going to bring right away. He is a bench big, and when he was actually playing in that role he looked just fine. He looks like a deer in headlights trying to be a 30 minute a night starter. Give him an off season, let him work on his body, strength, and his jumper and he'll be a nice backup C...which happens to be what we drafted him for.

What are you basing this on?

is ti when Scott said in preseaon that he expected Zeller to Start after the all star break in his freshman season.

or is it the constant rumours that Grant is pressuring Scott to play Zeller more than he should be.

or was it the high marks Z gave zeller scouting him before the Draft.

Both Scott and Grant made references to Zeller being a top 10 guy in their eyes.

regardless it appears quite clearly that the Cavs envisioned Zeller as a potential starter when they drafted him.

Re: Tyler Zeller: CHOCOLATE SNOW !!!

I think people are expecting way too much from Chocolate Snow... He's a role player who can finish around the basket and hit some mid range shots... He's not gonna post people up, be an exceptional shot blocker or rebounder (though very capable of obviously getting double digits on any given night)

I'm more concerned with him getting his rotations down as opposed to his post defense, cause there's simply just not enough talented low post players who work that way these days... But his inability to rotate or know where to be defensively is the main concern... He'll get marginally better as he goes...

Realism. Good and Bad. Zeller will get better. He is a rotational center. Where he was drafted, that is not bad. I like Zeller as a player, but my expectation of him are not top level starter. Rather he is a 20 min a night guy off the bench. He will excel in 2 or 3 years when playing against other back ups.

AV was supposed to be our starter this year and hopefully we draft a starting center of the future this draft. That said, I feel Zeller was luck AV got hurt because the extra minutes against other starters helped his development further than i expected.

Re: Tyler Zeller: CHOCOLATE SNOW !!!

Is anyone else getting tired of Austin Carr commenting on Zeller taking too many jumpers? Most of his attempts look like they are coming from within the flow of the offense, and Byron Scott would likely say something to Zeller if he did not want him taking those shots.

Re: Tyler Zeller: CHOCOLATE SNOW !!!

From Tom Withers:

F/C Tyler Zeller makes NBA All-Rookie second team.

Re: Tyler Zeller: CHOCOLATE SNOW !!!

Every year, All NBA Rookie second team members are filled with promising guys who could go either way in development. Last year Tristan and Parsons made the jump, Derrick Williams was fairly stagnant in development. The previous year Monroe and Favors were the second team bigmen, but Wes Johnson was the guy who really stagnated.

I'm hoping Zeller isn't the annual early peaker. Usually bigmen aren't the ones who regress.

Re: Tyler Zeller: CHOCOLATE SNOW !!!

I think Zeller is going to look really good with Brown at the helm. His rebounding will probably not ever wow anyone, but he should really benefit from a legit defensive system and being able to get out on the break.
