Re: Tyler Zeller: CHOCOLATE SNOW !!!
I haven't given up on him but he needs a lot of improvement to ever be some type of a piece on a possible contender. I just don't see with his personality that he's every going to be a physical presence or play tough inside. Right now I can't stand Zeller and hate watching him play. Says something when even Austin Carr repeatedly questions and criticizes Zeller. Cavs broadcasts aren't exactly known for their criticism.
A question could be raised as to why Grant felt the need to trade up for Zeller if he's only projected to be a career backup?
Probably because he projected the rest of the draft to be crap. Was right so far. (That's coming from a guy who raged about the trade on draft day :chuckles
Or maybe because Grant seen characteristics in Zeller (great work ethic, good overall person, good motor) that say that he will attempt to improve his game. A 7 footer who is willing to put in the work and improve on his game sounds great, especially for a late first and a couple second rounders. Other than Tristan, Zeller is the one guy on this team that I am 100% confident will be in the gym working his ass off this summer. He'll pack some muscle on improving his defense, make his jumper an actual threat, and will still be able to run the floor like a perimeter player.
The main things he needs to work on are defense, muscle gain, and jump shooting. I know that a lot of people will disagree with me here, but he has shown a lot potential on defense. He has had some great blocks this season, and never really looks "lost" like Tristan did last season or J.J did his whole career. That alone is GREAT for a rookie big. It's just a matter of being over-powered right now. Which coincides with his second need, muscle gain. That left hook of his would be so much easier if he could actually get position down low. There is
absolutely no doubt that we would see an immediate improvement on offense and defense if he gained 10-15 pounds of muscle. He'd be a different player. Finally, his jump-shooting. Again, Zeller seems like that type of guy who will put in so much work in the off-season. I know everybody is concentrating on the development of Tristan's jumper, but I feel like Zeller is going to come back next season with a deadly mid range. It'll be on every team's scouting report. And we've seen glimpses Zeller's ability to pump fake and put the ball on the floor when defenders play his jumper too tightly. Make he and Tristan will work on it together.
Zeller has had some rookie moments this season, like today against Philly for example. But he has also had some great moments as well. That's what rookies do. As long as they can show glimpses of potential, it's a successful rookie season. So I consider Zeller's rookie season successful.
Long-winded rant of much needed optimism is almost over.
Zeller's ceiling isn't a decent bench big. His
basement is a decent bench big, and he's already there.
Now it's over.
