First Round Pick

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
who else would you blame but the kids, maybe a little blame goes to the agent too?

they have total control over how much they want to make. white could be risking everything because the team only offered 1.9 million instead of 2.1. He would be set for life if he signed right now. instead if he doesnt he is one injury away from never getting close to seeing that much money again.

yes i can blame the kids, in fact its pretty easy.
You've got to be kidding. So these kids should be taking less money? This is a business. Put you in this situation and I bet you would be trying to get as much money too. It's not like going to college for another year and improving your stock is a bad option.

Who's to blame? Whoever set up this shitty process. They are only demanding this money because they can.

if you put me in that situation I take 1.9 million run to whatever team they want me to go to and work my ass off, because its the 2nd and 3rd contracts that are going to make him the big money.

we are talking about almost 2 MILLION DOLLARS. there is not a person on this board that wouldnt shit themselves for the chance to have that amount. every single one of us would take it and run and if you wouldnt you are flat out lying to yourself.

also there are two VERY GOOD reasons to take the money this year. first there is absolutely no guarantee that white is going to go any higher next year. He is projected to be a closer, he is going to be a year older, and if he gets injured he is screwed (all reasons to drop not go up in the draft). The second and most importantly even if he does go higher there is nothing that says he will make as much, in fact the argument could be made he could make less because he doesnt have a whole lot of good options after next year if he doesnt.

sorry but 95% of the time holding out hurts the player more than it helps them.

Who knows if this guy gets a second or third contract. That's why you have to get as much as possible.

but there is also the highly probable chance he doesnt even get a good first one if he turns this down.

if the kid plays his cards right 1.9 million even pretax is enough he can sit it in a bank his entire playing career and should he falter over the course of the next 4 or 5 years he has enough to fall back on and live modestly off the interest for the rest of his life. No he wouldnt be wealthy but he would never have to worry about being unemployed, because every year he would have another 50k coming in, and anything he could do on top of that would be gravy.

he should have take the money 2 months ago and got his ass to rookie ball, or where ever

What are your feelings on Lebron and 2010?

i think lebron is set for life, lebron knows exactly how much he can and will get from any team in the NBA and finally he will take every penny he can (for 3+1 years) from the cavs.

LeBron is so greedy. He should just play for vet min and save the Cavs some money. Let that greedy bastard walk!

/sarcasm

i know you were being sarcastic but still trying to make a point. I have never said let white walk, merely he should take whatever contract is being offered to him within the next 30 minutes and run with it. I personally would have done it 2 months ago, but i like to play things on the safe side. However white risking everything for the chance at maybe being able to make an extra couple hundred grand would just be dumb.

it is literally the same % difference as you or me rolling the dice in hopes of make 56k next year instead of 50k a year starting this year. someone says you can make 50k this year or have a chance if you perform as well as you did this year to make 56k next year. which do you take?

Exactly right. Look at the kid James out of Clemson. He could have came out "last year" and drafted maybe second round. He stayed in school. It turned out that was a very bad move for him as he thought he could do better and get drafted maybe first round. He wasn't featured as much his senior year, so it's really not an injury, but the point is still the same. These kids don't quite understand all that can happen in one full year. They really believe they are invincible. White will go back to school and play again next year and maybe get injured or have to have elbow surgery. Hindsight is great looking back at what could have been, but I'd rather take the cash RIGHT NOW instead of later.

I do put blame on the system as well. The NBA has things right for the most part. You get a fair salary as a rook, and have to earn your way to better things.

Tick tock. I'm really hoping we sign him. Read that MLB is trying to hold back on announcing signings to avoid leverage to other draftees. We'll probably get more signings rolling in, in the next hour or so.

Done deal according to Hoynes. No details yet, but believed to be in excess of 2 million.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Indians signed No.1 pick Alex White with time to spare. Two minutes, to be exact.

Chris Antonetti said he reached a deal with agent Keith Grunewald at 11:58 p.m. Monday.

Wow they almost lost him.
