Four Team Deal Sends Howard to Lakers

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Three-Way ORL/LAL/Cavs Rumor

The holdup has clearly been Orlando, who think they are going to get a king's ransom for Howard. Unfortunately for the Magic, due to Dwight's demands and few teams having either cap space/assets, the options are limited. I can't see how Orlando has any leverage left in this deal. You can say that the Magic can force teams like the Lakers to bid incredibly high because of Dwight's desire to head to Dallas as a FA, but that would be devastating for the Magic because they would still be stuck with all their terrible contracts. I also think that when push comes to shove, the Rockets are not going to trade for Howard because they don't want to lose their assets on a guaranteed 1-year rental. I don't even know if Bynum would be interested there, although he is more interested in money and being a max player. We know the Rockets want Dwight, but would they settle for Bynum?? I know the Cavs like Bynum more than the Rockets do, but I'm sure the Rockets would still be happy with him. If I were the Magic, I'd do the Cavs deal because they have more cap space to take bad contracts and can give you a prospect in TT that has more potential and upside than arguably any of Houston's players. It would also allow them to drive the tank and likely secure the number 1 pick. I'd rather take more expirings/1 raw prospect with huge upside/Sac Pick/our pick next season/Mia pick 2015 (they may be rebuilding at this point than a bunch of medium grade prospects/a Toronto lottery pick/Rockets pick. Although people are saying we'd be gutting our farm, the Rockets would really be going all-in, and for them, it may not be as worth it as it is for us.

Re: Three-Way ORL/LAL/Cavs Rumor

Proof the Lakers were just trying to send a message to Orlando

.......Bynum is unlikely to agree to an extension with a new team this summer, sources with knowledge of the player’s thinking confirmed Wednesday.

The Lakers have not granted the Cavaliers, Rockets, or Magic permission to speak directly with Bynum or his representatives.

THat makes no sense to me. Since the lakers need a third team to be involved why wouldn't they let those teams get a feel for whether or not they can resign Bynum. I realize no deal is close but both Houston and Cleveland will have to talk to Bynum at some point. If Grant talks to Bynum and comes away with the sense he will never resign with the Cavs then Grant can confidently walk away knowing he did his due diligence.

That's not how it works. They can't just let Bynum to talk to teams about signing/resigning with them. Parameters of a trade has to be in place before they allow bynum to talk to cavs or houston. Don't be upset with Bynum, Lakers, or even our FO. Be upset with Orlando for holding up the trade and be mad at Houston for being that loud and annoying dude with money trying to cockblock us from getting that hot girl.

Re: Three-Way ORL/LAL/Cavs Rumor

Btw Expect J-rich not to be a Laker if a deal is agreed to in this Dwight saga. Reason is because he fucked Nashs wife and Steve Nash has no respect for the guy anymore. Lakers have also made it clear they don't want J rich

Howcome JRich and Nash are still following each other on twitter, some say it was Barbosa. But regardless who it is its still just a rumor.

Re: Three-Way ORL/LAL/Cavs Rumor

Those rumors were debunked..it was not JRich and the baby was not black.

As shitty as the Le-decision was, when players hold their teams hostage like Howard is, its the ultimate douchbaggerey.

I don't get this. Lebron's decision got you 2 picks. Dwight and Melo are getting more for their team. If I was a fan of a team that had a superstar, I would rather them do what Dwight/Melo/CP3 did than what Bosh and Lebron did.

Heck, come trade deadline, the Nets can trade Humphries, Brooks and a throw in with the 3-4 picks. Assuming they don't want Lopez on a max deal, they take Hump for a year and a half. Still a lot better than what the Raptors and Cavs got.

Re: Three-Way ORL/LAL/Cavs Rumor

No, it isn't. Why take a guy making $12 M a year. Orlando is a nice destination. They can use cap space for FA's or just suck for a few years. If I'm Henigan, I don't want to be mediocre. Yeah, our package "sucked," but we bottomed out and got the #1 pick (albeit through trade) and remained bad enough to have 4 good draft picks the past 2 seasons (hopefully). I'm not trying to say this is the trade we should pursue, and I'm not doing it because I made it, but I feel that clearing the books, taking on a raw big with huge upside, and a couple (or 3 firsts) is the way to go. Turkoglu, Duhon, Richardsons all gone under this deal. Why take Hump, he's an albatross that only a moron would take his $12M contract, look at how little interest in Jamison there was. If Hump was so valuable then Dwight would be a Net and he'd be a cav.

Its nice Dwight is letting Orlando know ahead of time he won't resign so they can maximize the value they get out of him.

Its not so nice that Dwight is telling his agent to tell every team in the league except LA, brooklyn, and dallasnot to trade for him since he won't resign there.

Well, at least they haven't been blindsided. The organization is what is screwing itself over. Trade him for whatever you can get.

I mean, it's annoying but the team knows EXACTLY where Dwight is at and it's their fault it's taking so long.

NBA PM: Rockets Have Flexibility for Howard

Dwight Howard still wants a trade. This part isn’t news.

One team that has significant interest is the Houston Rockets. Currently sources close to Howard indicate that he does not want to be dealt to Houston, with the threat of walking to the Dallas Mavericks as a free agent next season a warning to the Rockets.

Whatever the case, Houston may be willing to risk everything on the chance they can convince Howard to stay long term.

Now that the Rockets have landed both Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik through the restricted free agency process, do they have enough flexibility to take on Howard along with a variety of unwanted contract from the Orlando Magic?

The simple answer is “yes.”

This exercise isn’t about what the Rockets will do but what they legally can accomplish if so motivated.

The presumption is that for the Magic to move Dwight, they want a combination of picks, prospects and salary relief. The players Orlando is looking to “dump” include Hedo Turkoglu, Chris Duhon, Jason Richardson and Glen Davis.

Turkoglu is set to make $11.8 million and $12.0 million over the next two years but the second season is only $6 million guaranteed.

Duhon is at $3.5 million and $3.75 million with the second year approximately $1.5 million guaranteed.

Richardson and Davis both have three seasons at $18.6 million and $19.4 million in total, respectively. Richardson does have a player option on his final year.

Additionally the rules have changed when matching salaries in trade for non-tax teams. When receiving up to $9.8 million in salary, the incoming team can take in up to 150 percent of the salary going out plus $100k.

From $9.8 million to $19.6 million, the padding on salary going out is a flat $5 million.

Once the numbers hit $19.6 million or greater, the tax-payer rate of 125 percent of outgoing salary (plus $100k) is used.

A single trade between the Rockets and Magic might not work at the 125-percent rate but a larger deal can be broken down into smaller components to take care of the complex rules of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Also noteworthy, the Rockets are still a cap team so they are capable of packaging recently-acquired players together in outgoing deals.

Timing can be difficult as first-round picks recently signed cannot be deal for 30 days. Donatas Motiejunas can be dealt around August 4th. Terrence Jones on August 9th. Royce White just inked and won’t be available until August 25th. Jeremy Lamb is expected to sign as well (may already have by publication) which would start the 30 day clock for him as well.

So what can the Magic and Rockets do directly, noting the contracts of Lin and Asik aren’t in the discussion?

Kevin Martin and Patrick Patterson combine to make $14,536,435. Howard, at $19,536,360 is slightly below the $19.6 barrier and fits within the $5,000 padding by just $75.

The combination of Donatas Motiejunas, Shaun Livingston, Diamon Simpson, Courtney Fortson and Josh Harrellson totals $7.1 million which, with the $5,000 padding, is enough to take on Turkoglu. Other than Motiejunas, each of the four players can be cut with non-guaranteed salary (although Livingston does have $1 million of his $3.5 million guaranteed).

Marcus Morris, Jon Brockman and Sean Williams combine to make $3.8 million which is enough to acquire Jason Richardson. Williams’ $916k is non-guaranteed.

Chandler Parson, Gary Forbes, JaJuan Johnson and Greg Smith (guaranteed $381k) work for Glen Davis.

Terrence Jones and Toney Douglas can be dealt for Chris Duhon.

The resulting combination, spread across four, separate trades? Kevin Martin, Patrick Patterson, Donatas Motiejunas, Shaun Livingston, Courtney Fortson, Josh Harrelson, Diamon Simpson, Marcus Morris, Jon Brockman, Sean Williams, Gary Forbes, JaJuan Johnson, Greg Smith, Chandler Parsons, Toney Douglas and Terrence Jones for Dwight Howard, Glen Davis, Jason Richardson, Chris Duhon and Hedo Turkoglu.

It’s not pretty. It’s not realistic . . . but is it possible for the Rockets to send 16 players to Orlando to take on Howard and four unwanted players, at least mathematically.

The question isn’t, “Can the Rockets put together a package?” They can.

Instead the Rockets need to decide how much Howard is really worth. What is the right number of young assets to give up and high-salaried players to take on given the risk Howard walks next summer?

At what point, given the price, does it make sense to go after Andrew Bynum as Plan B, helping the Los Angeles Lakers to get Howard?

The Magic may not trade Howard at all. They make look for other deals or multi-team trades that include the Cleveland Cavaliers, Lakers, Rockets or some other yet-to-be-named teams.

If the path to be walked only includes the Rockets, Houston has the flexibility to do some crazy, crazy things. It won’t necessarily look the monstrosity above, but technically it could.

Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey announced that the team now has all three of its first-round selections from the 2012 NBA Draft under contract, which includes Connecticut guard/forward Jeremy Lamb (12th overall), Iowa State forward Royce White (16th overall) and Kentucky forward Terrence Jones (18th overall).

Lamb (6-5, 180, Connecticut) was recently named an NBA Summer League 2012 All-Star after topping the Rockets entry in scoring and finishing eighth overall in points per game (20.0). An early entry candidate for the 2012 NBA Draft, Lamb was just the sixth sophomore in UConn history to score 1,000 career points (1,060). He was selected AP Honorable Mention All-America and All-Big East First Team as a sophomore after averaging 17.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. Lamb also helped UConn to a National Championship as a freshman, recording 12 points in the title game vs. Butler and earning a spot on the NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team.

White (6-8, 260, Iowa State) showed his all-around game at the 2012 NBA Summer League by averaging 8.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists with the Houston squad in Las Vegas. He came to the Rockets as the only player in the country in 2011-12 to lead his team in scoring (13.4 ppg), rebounding (9.3 rpg), assists (5.0 apg), steals (1.2 spg) and blocks (0.9 bpg) during his lone season at Iowa State. Overall, White became just the second player in school history to top the team in scoring, rebounding and assists in one season. His sophomore year with the Cyclones was highlighted by AP Honorable Mention All-America honors, All-Big 12 First-Team accolades, selection to the Big 12 All-Rookie Team and being named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.

Jones (6-9, 252, Kentucky) averaged 18.2 points and 8.6 rebounds with the Rockets at 2012 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, finishing tied for sixth in rebounds per game and 15th in scoring. Another of the early entry candidates for the 2012 NBA Draft, Jones averaged 14.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in 76 games over his two seasons with Kentucky. He was one of just six players in UK history to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 140 blocks in a career. As a sophomore, Jones helped the Wildcats win the 2012 National Championship, while earning Second-Team All-SEC honors. In 2010-11, he was selected SEC Freshman of the Year, First-Team All-SEC and was a member of the SEC All-Freshman Team.

Rockets signed some of their picks today.

If Dwight Howard's agent told the rockets he won't resign with them no matter what they are an extremely dumb organization if they trade for him.

Dwight Howard is a douche, anyway

Re: Three-Way ORL/LAL/Cavs Rumor

I take it as good news that Houston signed all three of their rookies. They cannot be traded for a month now so it makes a Houston/Orlando/Lakers trade less likely.

The Magic need to open their fucking eyes and realize that we will: give them cap relief, draft picks, and maybe even a nice player thrown in there. Dwight is leaving your team one way or another so you might as well get a nice little package for him; a package that will help fuel the tank for this season.

There is NO way in hell that they can bring Dwight to training camp, certainly not the actual season. When does training camp start? I'm hoping that since the Rockets won't be able to trade their rookies, Orlando will bite on our trade.

Either way, the Rockets chances seem ever so slightly smaller after the signings.
