Hughes Requires Surgery On Finger

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I agree with the tenor of the discussion so far that this is a big blow. We don't want Lebron playing more minutes to help make up for the loss of Hughes; he's playing too many already. Jones is a one-dimensional player who isn't up to playing more, and the same is true of Snow. The obvious hope is that either Sasha or Luke will step up, but I wouldn't hold my breath on either one of them doing this. I've urged that we take a look at Sprewell in the past, which is an option that is harder to deride now. He'd also be a nice player coming off the bench after Hughes returns.

As long as we stay otherwise healthy, I don't see Hughes going out as being that big of a blow. It really should just mean a few things

- LeBron will pick up the slack (and get more touches), solidifying his MVP candidate status. Remember, last year without Hughes, this team was just fine until McInnis flaked out and Z got injured. Even with Hughes out, Jones is an upgrade for McInnis, Marshall is an upgrade for Tractor. On top of that, LeBron is better this year than last. I expect a flurry of double doubles and triple doubles from LeBron these next 6-8 weeks as we continue our strong play on both ends of the court.
- It may be harder to close the gap with Detroit, especially if Hughes isn't back by the end of feb when we have that back to back with the Pistons, but otherwise, I don't see us losing our grip on the #4 seed.
- We'll be all that much stronger when he does get back, this time 100% healthy.

The goal is to peak in the playoffs. This is a minor setback in that regards, but one we still have plenty of time to overcome. This would have been a more serious blow had Newble not returned. I'm not at all saying Newble is as good as hughes, only that we would have had more of a depth problem right now without Ira.

I can't believe anyone on this board wants an ARTEST or SPREWELL to come here. They are good players but are a cancer to their teams. If ARTEST was worth it INDY would not even think of trades. If SPREWELL was worth it he wouldn't be available either. Newble has returned at the perfect time. Let's see what happens before we panic and abandon ship. Making a deal with the DEVIL(or Artest or Sprewell) always ends badly for you. I'd rather see what we can do as is.

I'd like to stand pat and add someone later that we really would LIKE to have.

We can't stand pat..I dont see how we can.

We just added a terrible defender in Jones into the lineup to go with another terrible defender in James. I dont buy the arguement that James has been solid, he gave up on four occassions last night when hed rather wakl back that led to 6 bucks points on fast breaks, we all know his man to man is poor, but he could care less about defensive effort.

Than add Jones to the mix, ugh..makes my stomach sick on how many points we are going to be giving up.

Spreewell is a solid defender and he can score, and it's next to impossible for him to be a cancer when he is on such a short leasch as well. So there shouldnt be any concern for that. Artest isnt coming to the Central, he will rot on Indians bench before that happens.

During this stretch, I doubt we beat any really good teams. Maybe here and there, but with Larry out we have to focus on beating the bad teams and making sure we beat those teams and continuing our streak at home. I dont see how this team, with it's already poor defensive effort WITH LARRY is gonna be par without him, add to it scoring is going to go wayyyyyyyyy down. What we are going to see is Lebron forcing, he is going to jack, jack and jack when things get rough.

His shooting % is going to go down, his TOs going to go up and over, losses are going to come.

thats if Jones continues to start.

I dont get how Newble isnt starting...he may not be a scorer, but Jones could only muster 3, while letting Mo Williams eat him alive. Newble atleast could slow down the guy is guarding on the other team.

What kind of move could we make? I don't think there's as much interest in luke/sasha/newble/snow as people seem to think around here. You'd have to package Gooden, which would SERIOUSLY effect the chemistry and play of a team that's winning games. If you can make a trade of the guys who aren't getting any PT (e.g. Jackson, Sasha) to help, go for it. Otherwise, it's useless.

Also, Sprewell's agent has said that the vet's minimum (around 1.5 mil for him) is "a slap in the face" and that Sprewell would rather sit out the year than play for that. Why he thinks that next year a team will pay MORE money for an old player that's one year older, I don't know, but it's what was said.

If spreewell had any sense at all, he'd already be in cleveland today with his agent trying to talk Ferry into a league minimum deal. If he wants a big deal next year, he needs to convince GMs that last year was a fluke. ANd he's sure not going to do that sitting out the season.

From our perspective, it'd be a minimal risk gamble to cut Hamilton and sign spreewell. If he performs, we have a bargain. If he doesn't, we move him to the inactive list and send him home.

Of course, we saw when he turned down the twolves extension that he doesn't have any sense, so I'm happy to move forward with the roster we have.

Damon Jones is god awful defensively ...to the point of embarrassing. He's worse than JMAC was last year ...and what that means is, he doesn't even put forth any form of resistance. We can't have Jones playing extensive minutes in our backcourt. Ira Newble has to be that guy, and he will hold his own. Damon can come in when Lebron has to leave the court, but that's about the only time I'd like to see him. As the season progresses my displeasure with Damon Jones game grows more and more ....to the point I truly wish we could unload him at any cost ...I just want him gone. Mike Wilks came in after Mo Williams repeatedly dusted Damon Jones in every way concievable ...and when Mike Wilks entered the game it was as if we just reached over and turned off the fawcett on Williams game. Jones was just getting his jock handed to him every time down the court,.,.just repeatedly getting blown past and broken down wihtout any resistance ,,,after getting smoked for a long stretch ..actually embarrassed ...he finally hit a three and proceeded to showboat as if he was actually contributing ...on the way back up the court after his three, Mo Williams again proceeded to turn the corner and score on him once again ....

I can't stand Damon Jones, and I sincerely hope we don;t expand his minutes because he's getting too many as it is ....lets give the Hughes minutes to Newble, Wilks and Jackson ...players that seem to have a 'team' game that fits what Mike Brown wants ...

no problem if hughes wants to take his annual siesta now instead of later in the year. we've got damon jones. didn't you love it when jones blew on his fingers after he made his (only) basket last night?

jones is a proven nba star. he has been in the playoffs for the last three years while we were stuck in cleveland watching the playoffs on tv. it is players like jones that will get our sorry franchise into the playoffs after a multiyear trip away from playoffland.

hughes will be back around the allstar break. that still gives him two months to get back into gear and prepare for the playoffs, which is the only thing that really counts. the playoffs will be our first chance to shut up those clowns who rag on us for ou horrible record of seldom making the playoffs and losing big once we get there.

Sprewell sounds nice but he's not the same player he used to be. His game has really slipped which is a big reason he's still out there and no one wants to give him big money. Spree doesn't have the quickness and athleticism that he used to have.
It's also highly doubtful that he'd be willing to sign for the vet minimum.

The Cavs do have players on their roster to take up Hughes' minutes. They shouldn't rush into making a move that could end up hurting them in the long run. I'd have no problem just staying with the players we already have. All teams have to play through injuries. This is also a time when it wouldn't have been nice if some young players would have gotten some minutes and been developed better by the coaches so they would be ready to step in now.

"jones is a proven nba star. he has been in the playoffs for the last three years while we were stuck in cleveland watching the playoffs on tv. it is players like jones that will get our sorry franchise into the playoffs after a multiyear trip away from playoffland."
Dude what are you smoking? The only thing sorry about this franchise is Jones.

I dont know about Spree, even if he signs and if he works out, would he be willing to sit when Hughes comes back and come off the bench? I doubt it, don't see that happening at all

Artest is a different story. If you remember, Rasheed Wallace was a similar case: huge off the court/on the court distraction, technical foul/ejection waiting to happen. Yet, he was the piece that was needed to take Detroit over the top, and he fit in there right away. Artest has that same potential to turn a team on the verge into a serious contender. His talent is there no doubt, hes young enough to be a long term impact, but will a GM be willing to take a gamble on him? I dont think anyone understands his frustration with the situation in Indy, where every writer in the country was calling them a serious championship contender already, and it seems kind of odd that the guy wanted to jump ship from a team that cut him so much slack already. He seems even more troublesome than Sheed was in Portland or Spree coming from Golden State.
