If bought-out, Cavs option for McGrady

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
You are way off on this. They will have cap space. His last years contract plus 10%? will be the cap hold to keep his birds rights. Even as dumb as the Knicks are, they will surely renoucne his rights to make sure they have the max amount of money available to sign a free agent.

You are way off on your understanding of the current colective bargaining agreement. Birds rights are only useful to teams currently over the cap.

Kudos on the CBA catch, Lee.

However, you made one GIANT mistake. McGrady's cap hold would be his current salary + 10.5%!!! Jeez, how ignorant of the CBA are you?!?!

Thanks for the clarification Lee...

Now that I look at it again, you're absolutely right. My understanding of Bird Rights was off - I forgot about cap holds, which obviously is a huge oversight on my part.

I still believe the ultimate premise of my thought process was correct - the comments coming from McGrady's camp are meant to force the Knicks into making the deal. No matter what - NY trading for TMac is better for him than a buyout. If he's bought out he loses money. If he gets traded to NY he doesn't lose a dime and he's pretty much guaranteed playing time and an opportunity to prove his worth once again.

At the end of the day, I'm thinking any interest TMac expressed in the Cavs or Lakers is a smokescreen coming from McGrady. You haven't heard anything from anyone surrounding the Cavs or Lakers say a word about Tracy McGrady, other than Danny Ferry "keeping an eye" on him this season.

Now, I shall return to salary cap school, where I obviously still have some work to do...

A buy out is as much or as little as the player agrees too. If sac doesnt want him on their team, he can take all of his money but lets say 500k, then get the 500k back from his new team. He doesnt neccessarily loose money and the buyout the player is in control of the proccess.

Its not a smoke screen about the cavs or lakers, teams cant comment on a player under contract with another team. Its called tampering and it could cost you draft picks and enourmous fines from the league offiice.

I would agree that ny would be a good situation for t-mac. Up tempo style and lack of talent would mean lots of minutes and lots of points for t-mac. That said, only t-mac really knows what is important to him. Making even more money, or being part of a winner. At this point I will take him for his word, as if he retires now he would go down as one of the NBA's all time loosers. And no one wants that tag on their career. Not even t-mac.

Did you look that up, or do you retain useless figures like me? :chuckles:

10.5 makes some sense, as its the amount of increase a team can give to their own player, thus it would be the max a team could offer t-mac next year.

I know most of the CBA by heart, as well as most of the players' salaries (I know, pathetic, right?). The cap hold is 150% of the previous salary, up to the max that player can be signed for. Since T-Mac's current salary is greater than 30% of the cap, his max salary would be this year's salary + his max raise, which is 10.5%.

But yeah, I'm a math freak. I tend to retain numbers.

Me too. In essence bird rights are only for teams over the cap. When under, they become useless. Seems like a basic concept to me.

For the record I am most likely against bringing in T-mac. Just dont think what he is saying is a smoke screen. He is already a very rich man and I am sure he is very tired of loosing.

Nobody can say whether he can still start or not. He could be just a decent role player now, or he could still be a 20ppg scorer. He was given a few minutes in a few games earlier in the season, and to be honest, his progress in those games was fantastic.

But I have no idea how hard he's been working out since then. He won't ever be the athletic freak he was, but Mac is a smart veteran who's had the experience of being on top of the league.

Best case scenario is that you end up with a 30 year old version of Iguodala with less explosion and not as good of a defender.

If we work him out and like him, I wouldn't mind him on this team.

Disagree, I still think this is a smokescreen from McGrady's camp.

OBVIOUSLY teams can't comment on a player under contract with another team. You missed my point. My point was the linking of TMac to LA and Cleveland came from his camp - we've heard nothing from anyone SURROUNDING either the Lakers or the Cavs indicating an interest in McGrady.

Everyone and their grandmother knew the Cavs wanted Jamison and Stoudemire, because reputable reporters who cover both teams were all over the story. Insiders like Wine and Gold confirmed interest and kept us up to date. When a TEAM has an interest in a player, they obviously don't say so publicly because of tampering rules, however you typically learn of that interest from other sources.

NOBODY who covers the Lakers or Cavs has even mentioned Tracy McGrady. Knowing what I do know about the Cleveland Cavaliers, I would be VERY surprised if they brought him in at this point.

Personally, a strong portion of me is against bringing in T-Mac. We have Mo, LeBron, Jamison and Shaq who can all be focal points of an offense and create shots. We have Boobie, Delonte, Jamario, AV, Hickson, and Z off the bench.

McGrady seems like one of those players where, if it was last year, and we weren't confident that we were the best team in the NBA, we'd bring him in.

This year, however, we are the best team in the NBA. We have shown that we can shut down the Lakers. We have shown that we can beat the Magic. The Celtics are not really a problem.

So, while T-Mac could be an upgrade, he's just not worth the risk at this point.

Perfect scorer to enter the game whilst Bron is taking a rest, I like this alot aslong as he can prove his health I can't see this hurting the team.

I do think our team is ALOT more attractive to potential buyout free agents like T-Mac though. With two old guys like Shaq and now Jamison, this team is sending a message that we're going ALL OUT for this season.

There will be alot of ring chasers like T-Mac trying to come along for the ride.

Not sure he would be good in the locker room. Not good for what will be a role player. Telfair scares me for the same reason too.

I'd like to see him sign at our camp.

It will be our perfect little story. He can't get out of the 1st round then all of a sudden when he does, he goes on to win a ring. Talk about total fulfillment. He'll publish a book about his crummy basketball career with Cavs being the publisher (lol wut?) and the book sells real well in Cleveland, Orlando, Toronto, Houston and New Yawk (they did it for the lulz) and then the organization rakes millions of dollars in. And Dan Gilbert and T-Mac lived happily ever after.

What could we offer T-Mac?
