Iman Shumpert: Gone! Thank God!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Per 100 possessions, our current starting 5 is +27.5. That is an INSANE number.

Shump with the starters is a much smaller sample size (48.6 Min vs 347.6 min).

Per 100 possessions, Iman with the starters is +17.7. Still very good.

Good information right there- thanks Dan. I'd be curious to see the bench's per 100 though.

Either way...

Lol at getting these two for Waiters.
We didn't though. We got a 1st rounder for Dion Waiters (aka, half of what it took to get Moz). We got Shump to take JR's from the Knicks. Yeah, the Thunder had to send an almost meaningless 2nd rounder to the Knicks, but that's all they took to dump the two of them.

JR was such a headcase (I imagine salary played a role, as well), the Knicks thought it was worth losing Iman to get rid of him. And here we are loving what both of them bring.

I do think it might be a bit dangerous to bench JR, but it would fit the team's needs for better, in my opinion. Maybe the starting lineup wouldn't be as devastating, but we'd lose less going to the bench, which is still pretty bad.

I always thought it would be a natural fit with Shump in the starting lineup and JR being the scoring punch off the bench, but I'm really changing my position on that, for a few reasons:

1) JR is at his best in catch-and-shoot situations. When someone is creating for him, he can focus on what he does best, and he's hit some huge shots in this role.

2) Being on the court with Lebron, Love, Kyrie et al. keeps his bad tendencies in check. He handles the ball rarely and so limits his bad chucking that got him run out of NY.

3) The bench is sorely lacking in ball handling capability. We have Delly (not that great himself) and that's it if JR is on the 2nd unit. JR is not a good ballhandler. Nobody will mistake Shump for Kyrie, but he can at least create some space with his dribble.

4) JR's defense is really not as bad as I expected. He's playing his man pretty well and getting into the passing lanes more than I expected. I thought it would be much worse.

5) The lineup with JR starting is absolutely rolling. We're talking historically-good levels. I'm just not sure there's a compelling reason to change it up beyond the fact that our bunch output is low. But again, I have a feeling the dropoff from the starting unit might be more than what is gained on the bench, solely from a basketball fit standpoint.

I guess I'm not opposed to mixing up the minutes with the starting group between JR and Shump more, but the more I watch the more I'm convinced that JR's best fit with the team is with the guys who are going to create for him.

Good information right there- thanks Dan. I'd be curious to see the bench's per 100 though.

That is a lot harder to calculate given the randomness of the rotations.

The starting lineup is 10 points better with Smith in it vs Iman.

Our most used combination with at least 2 bench players (including Shump), which is a bit better comparison, is:

Delly, LeBron, Mozgov, Shump, TT but it has only been on the floor for 34.2 minutes....which is a really small sample size.

That unit is a rather crazy +64 in just 32.4 total minutes or a per 100 of +50. Obviously not sustainable.

The best bench combination used most often is Kyrie, Love, LeBron, Marion and TT. That 5 man unit in 100+ minutes played is +30.3 per 100 possessions.

I can't imagine a scenario where swapping Smith out leads to improving the bench unit enough to offset what we would lose from our starters. Especially given how large Smith's sample size is with the first unit (nearly 350 minutes). That is illustrated by assuming Smith is a bench player and inserting him with the big 3 and TT. That 5 man unit is a pretty average +9.6 per 100 possessions. J.R. seems to work so much better with that first unit (eye test), which the advanced stats back up.

Anyone find a gif of Shump & Perk jammin?

such a perfect fit for our team...a defensive lineup that can be lethal could be Kyrie, Shump, Marion, Lebron, and Mozgov!

maybe i am looking to into it but anyone see on instagram his post about his hair at the end he said its a dirty game, wondering if he meant tonight with the pacers that if west throws some bows like he always does, if someone on Cleveland does the same.

Here's a little nugget:

With Iman on court, the Cavs' defense is equivalent to the best defense in the NBA.

With him on court, the DRtg is 100.7 which is Golden State's DRtg.

Iman is playing pretty good, but has yet to feel comfortable on offense.
It's partially the result of the bench lineup. He seems to end up with the ball and has to create which is not his strength really. I'm hoping that the bench get to run more motion as getting him on the move or spotting up is probably what suits him best
