Joe "Captain America" Harris

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
You can tell Smokin' Joe benefited from the four years in college. For a rookie he has a veteran presence about him. I think he was definitely the better choice over keeping Sergey Karasev...Serge probably has more talent/skills, but needs much more seasoning to get there. (And that's only on the offensive side of the ball...defensively Karasev projects to be quite poor)

Harris can be a reliable contributor to a championship team much sooner.

Harris is a lot more physically imposing than Karasev.

Too soon to say on the Karasev comparison. Karasev is definitely more multifaceted than Harris and has really good length. Some think he was a lottery talent. We don't know we never saw him play.Harris's defense is better today.

Karasev seemed timid and seemed like he lacked confidence, he was also rail thin and had a very poor first step...when one of the facets of his "multifaceted game" is his handles and passing, being easily guardable and slow kind of makes that facet somewhat irrelevant. Harris seems to know his strengths and plays to them. It seemed last year even when Sergey was spotting up, he looked uncertain with making split second decisions on when to shoot or try to make a pass... And a lot of his passes weren't very fundamental, he tried a lot of flashy stuff from what I remember. Harris is older, and knows his role. Part of Karasev's lack of confidence may have come from having a coach that is abysmal at developing young talent, and an offense that a 4th grader drew up didn't help either...but also it could be because he's just not fit for the NBA, and belongs in the Euroleague. Either way, I hope Joe can learn a thing or two from Mike Miller about how to move without the ball, get open, and how to best utilize his specific skill sets to contribute to a winning team. Harris>Karasev

Karasev has played few minutes at the end of the Nets rotation in two games against the Kings in China so far. His last game went to overtime and he got a little more burn to help the Nets, hitting a three and 4/4 free throws. But, end of the bench for a pretty bad team. Bogdanovic has been starting for them at SG.

I think Wally Szczerbiak, especially the older version, might be a better comparison.

I'm all for seeing a little Wally World from Joey Hoops... minus the lack of hustle against the Celtics that led us into losing that series.

Harris is a lot like Delly in that regard. He's never going to be an elite player, but he can come in and contribute right away because he's smart, plays hard, and can stroke the three ball.

I don't see him as a Troy Daniels but having a guy like Mike Miller on the team could be great for his development.

I should have expounded on that earlier.

The Troy Daniels reference was to his playoff performance coming seemingly out of nowhere on the bench as a young prospect and making an impact with his 3pt shot.

Maybe an older Wally Z later on in his career as he did utilize the post in UVA a bit.

I know exactly what you meant. But I don't see him getting those clutch minutes in the playoffs unless Miller or Waiters are injured. We're a good two deep at the guard positions, so I see him mostly getting minutes during blowouts at this point.

Especially if you add Allen to the mix.

Sounds like the stereotype scouting report for every white player.

Yes, but a guy like Courtney Lee fits that profile as well. 4 year players are guys I want us to go after the next few years. They can contribute right away, but more importantly they don't make the mistakes one and dones do.

It's pretty simple. Joe Harris' role, as of now, is to replace Miller/Jones/Allen (?!) when they retire. Furthermore, he could be a good trade sweetener. I doubt he plays much this year but he will make the roster and develop behind Miller. The guy is talented but is behind significant veteran presence.
