Johnny Manziel: Swan Won't Return His Calls

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
As a Bengals fan I hope we see Manziel in the regular season. We do bad things to mobile QBs. But all ima say is I watched every snap he took and he definitely looks like a potential game changer . Dude has legs and at least what I seen didn't get too run happy. Quick delivery and on the completions they were put into great spots for the WR. He also has that gene to prolong plays. A lot of QB don't have that but id like to see him hold off on running and wait maybe an extra second to see if any passes are available before he takes off

Also this is the first browns player in a while it want to be successful. The media and world has been so fair weather with him it should be criminal . At a certain point freakinh decide if you like him or not jeez

If he goes on to have a great game on ESPN next week w/ the starters it will hype the whole team up tremendously, it would pretty much give Pettine no choice but to start him week 1.

Something tells me that this is more of a guess, rather than a fact. I have a hard time buying into anything Pettine hasn't said to the team yet. So, unless it's been pre-determined and we just don't know, I'd wonder how Hellie knows.

its odd that ESPN Gossi is so anti manziel when the rest of espn seems to be pushing for a Manziel start as well as other media outlets.

Change happens quickly in the NFL, but the shifting winds in Cleveland are extreme even by professional football standards.
Two weeks after ESPN's Bob Holtzman reported that Browns players expect Brian Hoyer to be named the starter "well before" the third preseason game, safety Donte Whitner tells Peter King of The MMQB that the locker room is split "50-50" on Hoyer versus Johnny Manziel.

This comes just days after the Bleacher Report's Mike Freeman noted the same split between veterans and young players in the Browns' locker room.
A team source now tells Holtzman that Manziel is actually ahead in the competition after showing a live arm and trademark playmaking ability outside the pocket in Saturday's preseason opener.
Holtzman's report comes on the heels of news from NFL Media's Dan Hellie that Manziel will start the second preseason game against the Washington Redskins on Aug. 18.
Nothing has been decided in this competition, but it's starting to look like Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau's might have been on to something with last week's prediction.

Every media member wants him to start, it's the easiest season of writing they're likely to see for a while.

Lets not it has anything to do with football.

So what happens if the Bills have the worst record in the league next year?

:hide:

Anyone else worried that if Manziel is the opening day starter, he's gonna suffer a serious injury and be out for the season by week 8? A combination of factors make me think this...including his reckless style of play, his smaller physical stature, and having a target on his back from being a media lightning rod in addition to being a rookie. I think the kid is going to get really beat up out there.

I mean, I don't think you can really use that as a reason not to start him if he's earned it. If he gets hurt, he gets hurt. He didn't seem all that reckless last night, though. Went out of bounds and slid on different plays rather than try to do something crazy. As long as he keeps that up, he should be fine. Mobile QBs are always going to be at higher risk to get injured. It's just the nature of the style of play. If he deserves to start, you start him.

Honestly, the fact that he's a Browns QB pretty much makes him a lock to be hurt by week eight. :chuckles:

What I saw from Manziel last night I liked a lot. Kid has a cannon, and was zipping balls in to receivers and was throwing out routes to perfection. He was pretty damn accurate too. Who was it that was comparing Manziel to Colt after we drafted him? :chuckles: I don't remember.

He definitely still needs to learn how to stay in the pocket more, and use his legs more to extend plays rather than to escape and run with the ball. But boy, he is fast and agile and can definitely make people miss at this level as well.

All in all, I saw a starting quarterback in the NFL.

What did you think of his performance last night?

I think Manziel can be successful in the NFL if he's used the right way. He needs an OC that's as creative and versatile as he is. Shanahan is gonna have his work cut out for him...I think Johnny's at his best if the play calls keep being switched up, and the opposing defenses have no idea what's gonna be run next.

I'd add knowledge of the playbook to this as well. He didn't have much of one in college and now we're expecting him to have an NFL playbook down by week one? I think that's a lot to put on the kid.

I'd say I was actually pleasantly surprised last night. Nothing Earth shattering, I thought Hoyer looked rusty. Johnny looked better than I thought considering our second line couldn't hold protection for more than a second.

I still don't think he's the answer, but I'm really hoping he proves me wrong.
