Johnny Manziel: Swan Won't Return His Calls

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Pettine seemed a lot less definitive today in this being a rest of the year benching. Said he wanted to see how things "play out."

I'll still be shocked if he sees the light of day again, but maybe this somehow ends up just being temporary?

What are the odds his RCF username starts with a 'T'?
very slim
1. Tornicade's first name is not Bill
2. Tornicade is a Cowboys fan

I have taken interest in Manziels development and the Browns management of his development.

I also saw where Pettine told Manziel this wasnt the end and he to cleveland.com that he wanted to see how Manziel handled his discipline.

This indicates a temporary thing.

but it was very heroic of Pettine to take a stand and bench a guy in favor of the guy he really wanted to start anyways.

Im sure multitudes of Browns players are losing sleep at night trembling from fear of breaking the Pettines circle of trust.

Probably not. But I think some, at least the veterans, are glad guys will be held accountable.

Just listening to McCown's comments. It's actually embarrassing they handed this job to a spoil little brat like Johnny to begin with over him.

A guy that does all the right things off the field, and hasn't even warrant losing his job on the field.

Josh Mccown isnt a 23 year old 1st round pick

he is 1-6 as a starter and signed with the Browns knowing full well he would lose his starting job to the spoiled little brat if the team didnt win.

It's not like this spoiled brat is winning us games either.

Why do people keep bringing up where he was drafted?

Tom Brady is a 6th round pick. Better start Garoppola. 24 years old, second round pick. Better play him!

Who cares where Manziel was drafted, he sucks.

It's not about fear at all, it's about being held accountable and showing Manziel and the other young guys that they won't get chance after chance if they mess up.

God forbid the coach want the guy who gives the team the best chance to win, to start, right? How crazy of Pettine, fire his ass now!

Tom Brady didnt win the starting job. Bledsoe had a major injury and went 11-3 as a 24 year old.
that was enough to send 29 year old Bledsoe on his way

the patriots werent looking for a franchise qb but they found one

Mccown is not a franchise qb.He is not leading the team to wins and he is not being developed long term for the Browns.

Manziel is. put him in there. evaluate him and make an assesement.

Cowboys had Troy Aikman. 1st overall. he went 0-11 . They also had drafted Steve Walsh who started 5 games himself. Aikman threw 9 td and 18 interceptions and went on for a hall of fame career.

Playing Manziel doesnt bar the Browns from bringing in another quarterback . it does however give the more information to decide whether they should keep him or not. as opposed to grading the guy on how many times he went to the disco and how he did well he practiced.

Pettine himself has commented on how Manziel has progressed with actual game film to learn from

Only casual fans still don't get Johnny can't play in this league.

I'm hardly an expert, but I've seen enough to know he can't play in this league. He can't. This is my non-bias view. I've tried being open minded with his play too.

He's not really been bad when he's played, but he's shown his clear limits and deficiencies that will plague him in this league too.

The Browns don't want him at all. I wish they'd just cut him, to avoid any circus talk about him playing I suppose...

My guess why they haven't is they still think they can trade him.

He has no future here. His only ally was Haslam. Pettine and Farmer have their own issues, but they can at least toot their horns that this guy isn't theirs.

Infinity more than the number of players who feel as sorry for Manziel as you do.

Yeah and you want to know what's going to happen with this team? We're going to blow our chance at getting the #1 pick because Pettine tries to save his job, and McCown actually gives the team a better chance to win. Here comes those 2-3 meaningless wins Cleveland fans.... You know it's coming.

This franchise is so bad they can't even tank. Now we're playing McCown and he's actually capable of winning meaningless football games. McCown wants to win these meaningless football games! Think about the absurdity of that statement. Our 35yr old non-future QB is going to ruin our chance at getting THE franchise QB we've been dying for since...... ohhh going on a decade plus now......

By playing Johnny, we were going to get him out of our system; playing Manziel is the intelligent way to tank. Johnny isn't realistically good enough at football to win. The mode of thought then becomes that the Cleveland Browns weren't "tanking" we were just making damn sure that Johnny is who he is... so that there will be no remorse or dissonance when we finally cut him.....

Playing Johnny was an order handed down to Pettine from Haslam. Pettine has never wanted to play Manziel because Johnny has broken Pettine's trust too many times. This whole entire Johnny Manziel situation falls back on our owner, and how accepting of blame is he? How culpable is Jimmy willing to be when the cameras and microphones are on him?

McCown is looking out for his own future; he has no allegiance to the Browns. He's trying to get another contract somewhere after us. He's going to win this game for us on Monday night football. AND FOR WHAT? FOR WHAT HONESTLY. All these potential wins will show, is exactly how inept we are as a franchise. We can't even try to lose. Losing is just a function of our existence in the National Football League. Losing is what happens when we actually try to win. Winning is what happens to us when it's probably best that we lose.

If Pettine is going to be fired anyways, why not go out swinging? If you are Mike Pettine, soon you'll be sitting at a bar as former coach of the Cleveland Browns saying "see Haslam, if you'd have just stayed out of the fucking football side and not forced that clown Johnny Manziel on me.... Myself and old man Josh McCown could have actually won games in Cleveland; but you Jimmy, you and that moron Ray Farmer are the reason I couldn't succeed."

Pettine is going to look justified for playing the guy that gives you the best chance to win.

Jimmy isn't going to play the fool and be responsible for Johnny Manziel. Jimmy is going to publicly lash out and fire both Ray Farmer and Mike Pettine. Johnny Manziel will be cut, or traded for peanuts, but you know who isn't going to be standing on stage looking like a jackass? Our very owner, Jimmy Haslam. He's going to be upset, red faced and "impatient to no end to bring winning football back to Cleveland."

How very fucked up they are. It's unfathomable how deep their problems run. Just as we get the franchise QB, our excellent line will have dried up, aged to prunes. Seriously there's only one thing that could save this franchise and it would be God and his mercy on the fans of Cleveland who are impossibly patient wading through this shit-river of a franchise.

Why is everyone so worried about the quarterback?

The defense and offensive play-calling are what have been and will continue to drive this tank full force.

Sleep well my friends...

You are absolutely right sir - Expect the 1 -2 meaningless wins that will put us just out of the reach of Goff and Lynch just like it did during the Luck, RG3 sweepstakes. And all the fans are going to be moaning then. I understand if you want to teach Johnny a lesson - but atleast try and make Austin Davis the #1 QB. We signed him to a long term deal too. Let us see if he atleast has the making of a back up QB.

While one cant fault Pettine with trying to win games and save his job. If the management and the coaching is not on the same page with regards to tanking for a top draft pick then all i can say is that they are dumber than casual fans. Maybe they can re-design the uniforms again and give us a fresh new look.

So sick of seeing the following excuses:

A) "Well, the media and social media need to leave him alone and let him live."

-These guys know the kind of world we live in today, with the media magnifying everything and social media being bigger than ever.

-Johnny called the media onto him when he created "johnny football". He's also the one who "somehow" finds his way staring into a cell phone video practically every time.

B) "He didn't do anything illegal"

-True, but it's not about that. He was told, publicly and privately, that he needed to stop being a distraction & to stay away from the party scene.

-He was just named the starting QB of an NFL team. It's bad enough he was doing stupid shit as the backup, but as the starter? Unacceptable.

-WTF was even the point of rehab then? He has publicly, and I'm sure privately as well, stated that he would stop being a distraction and causing a scene.

C) "Josh Gordon is in a similar situation, but they didn't bench him.."

-No, he's not. The Browns didn't bench him because the NFL did it for them. Apples and oranges here.

-That's an NFL issue vs a team issue, which is what the Johnny situation is.

D) "So guys can beat their women, but can't drink at a club?!?"

-That lies on the NFL and those other players' respective teams, NOT the Browns. Can't blame the Browns if the NFL & the Cowboys are stupid and don't want to take action against Greg Hardy.

E) "So its fun when Gronk does it, but unacceptable when Johnny does?"

-Gronk isn't the starting QB.

-Gronk is one of the best players in the game and has put in the work ethic. Johnny has been known not to and hasn't proven anything.

-It doesn't effect Gronk's play, he always produces, has had no public run-ins with the law, and hasn't been caught doing drugs.

Bottom line: there is NO excuse. Period. He still doesn't get it and probably never will.

I'm quoting this post not because I have a reply, but because it's the best post I've read in this thread.

I'm dangerously close to becoming a Panthers fan, by the way. If they weren't undefeated, I'd probably be there already. I just don't wanna become some fair-weather asshole like most people in Charlotte.

All I see is people justifying judging a guy because he is a NFL Quarterback.

It typically is spearheaded by people who were against drafting Manziel a year before he came to the team.

Whats gonna happen is social media at some point is gonna lose its power over people and people will think for themselves again.

now Its quite reasonable if the browns demoted manziel and took him in for a drug test. however if and once he passes a drug test. shows up to work and shows he has a handle on balancing his personal life with his professional football life then there is really no reason not to put him on the field.

I dont think any employer has any right to tell you where you can and cant go on your free time within reason of your rights and privileges as a US citizen no matter how much your paying a guy.

I dont think the Browns had a right to demand Manziel not to goto a club .

but because he had a problem and proactively sought help for it . The Browns Believe they can tell him that going to a disco while on leave is forbidden?

Dont think so.

As far as the traffic incident The Nfl investigated and decided there was nothing there to punish Manziel for.

I dont feel sorry for Manziel I feel sorry for Society and their need to judge people for living their lives.

I would just like to know where is the line an employer cant cross . indentured servitude of america isnt exactly the founding principle of this country.

And these players who are relieved that a fellow player should have their employeer dictate what they can and cant do off the field that are within society norms are idiots and I will continue to have no sympathy for them when they get raped again on the net contract renewal.

Manziels off field drinking ... none of our business.

Manziels drinking impacting his work?... certainly a fans business.

The Browns circle of trust is joke and I dont blame Manziel for not having any respect for that circle.

He has done everything they asked since he screwed up and the Browns treat him like a puppet and get mad when the strings get cut.

Some of these players on the Browns who are supposed to be leaders might be better off worrying more abut their own lives than judging a kid with wild streak if that is the case like maximus presents

If Manziel shows he isnt prepared or breaks team rules while on the clock or does something to create "embarrasment" thats actually something to be embarrased about then you throw the hammer down. Otherwise the Browns drafted a high profile celebrity as quarterback and they continue to add fuel to the fodder.
