Josh Gordon discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'll admit that I know very little about Josh Gordon and NFL policy, but it seems like BS. The only thing I hold against Josh Gordon is the DUI, which he didn't get suspended for (am I correct on that?). Everything he has been suspended for is behavior that most of the country is doing and is either legal everywhere, or in select states. In fact, I'm confident the people suspending him have engaged in the same behavior, but somehow Gordon has a problem. I cannot imagine losing my job for practically two years for a joint and two beers. It seems as though the NFL has a bigger privacy issue than Gordon has a drug issue. I don't think employers have any right to check people for alcohol usage. If all American employers did unannounced drug tests tomorrow, what percentage of the workforce would we lose?

Once again, I know very little about the situation; is he really in trouble and at risk of hitting bottom, or is he just getting caught doing something barely harmful that most people do, but don't get caught?

Pot and alcohol are barely harmful until they cost you millions of dollars, friends, co-workers and ultimately your career.

Look, I get that he was suspended just for drinking alcohol, which seems stupid. However, NFL policy is NFL policy, and it's Josh Gordon's job to understand what he can and cannot do and then not do the things that aren't allowed. He violated the rules for, like, the sixth time and got busted. I'm done trying to defend this jackass. He fucked up yet again and he's paying the consequences. I have no sympathy for him. He deserves this suspension.

It's not as if this was a one time thing with Gordon. It's happened over and over and over since he was in college. I don't know whether he has a problem with drugs or alcohol, but he certainly has a problem with being intelligent.

The cultural acceptance and legality in some states of Weed and Alcohol has no baring in the Gordon case. Frankly it's an uneducated argument.

Bottom line is what @Jack Brickman said. The NFL has a policy against marijuana. Gordon violated it. You may not agree with the policy but it's a collectively bargained policy. Gordon has to live by it and accept it whether he agrees with it or not. He also got busted with the DUI, which he was suspended 2 games for this year. That suspension was tacked onto his 8 game suspension causing him to miss 10 games this year. In negotiating a settlement for the DUI, the NFL and Gordon agreed to a zero tolerance alcohol policy for him. He violated that. The rules were clear with him. He clearly ignored them. He's paying the price for that.

I made a quick check on The Browns financial investments in their receiving corps.

Highest paid receiver in 2015 is Andrew Hawkins, pulling in 5 million this season. Interestingly, he drops to 1 million in 2016. Bowe is second making 4.5 million, but it jumps to 8 million if he is on the roster in 2016. Hartline makes 2.25 million this year and 3.75 in 2016. No other receiver is making more than $900,000. If you also factor in the dirt cheap tight ends - Barnidge at 1.2 million, Dray at 1.9 million, and Housler at 1.7 million - this is a bargain basement investment in weapons.

Other offensive skill positions are also a low investment. All the running backs are on rookie contracts that are bargain basement cap hits. For all the shit we give Manziel at times his contract is only a 1.8 million cap hit, signing bonus included. That is a backup quarterback investment, financially. McCown is the 3rd biggest money out of the non-offensive linemen at a whopping $3.9 million cap hit after the signing bonus, which is of course veteran backup QB money.

So if you think this offense resembles the clearance rack at an Old Navy, its because we are paying Old Navy prices at every non-offensive linemen position.
For a while I thought Gordon would be traded. I now kinda think the Browns are planning to extend him. I think letting Sheard walk was a part of that. Gordon talked of playing with Pryor next season and to me that gives an illuminating look into his where he sees his future at.

Tying any amount of substantial money in Josh Gordon would be almost laughable. Plus that would send an awful message to the players, giving major money to a guy who continuously lets down the team at every point in his career. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.... fool me several times throughout your football career and your shit is getting old Josh.

The 49ers cut Aldon Smith. IMO we should have taken their lead and sent a message. All of the ability in the world means nothing without availability. I can understand not cutting him, but wanting to tie your financial future to Josh Gordon is beyond a fireable offense.

Gordon will screw up again before next season starts, and will most likely be banned for life. I doubt he ever plays again.

He's young and too good. He will play, whether it's for the Browns (likely) or another team.

You don't have much to lose by cutting him.

You do however have a lot to lose if you let him go and he stays clean.

If it doesn't cost the Browns much, you keep him. He screws up again, the league will handle the situation for the Browns.

People still talking themselves into Gordon... He's going to end up on the Browns until he's 30 because one day he might clean it up...

As long as he doesn't beat his girlfriend or his kid or get accused of murder.....he should be fine.

Yea, he'll be fine.

I think the Browns would cut ties with him if they weren't so desperate to win. But they are, and he's a talented player. I'm not convinced he'll ever get his act together, but I can see why they've not cut ties with him yet.

Unless he does something so outrageous that they can't justify hanging onto him, there's no point of letting him go.

But, for now on you just have to be under the assumption going forward that he's not on the team. And if he happens to not get suspended that's just an extra bonus.

You definitely can't build your roster as if you can depend on him though.

I dont think he costs the browns anything until he actually plays a game. Further, he will still be on his rookie deal next year as a year where you are suspended 10 or more games does not count.

Right. From what I recall on the subject, Gordon will be on his rookie contract 2 more years assuming he comes back. Its basically a no risk/high reward, albeit very wishful, situation for the Browns at this point. They gain nothing by cutting him.
