A good look at a few particulars from the program...

LeBron's foundation to spend $41M to send kids to college
LeBron James is giving kids from Akron — ones with challenging backgrounds like his — the chance to go to college for free.

The NBA star has partnered with the University of Akron to provide a guaranteed four-year scholarship to the school for students in James' "I Promise" program who qualify. The scholarship will cover tuition and the university's general service fee — currently $9,500 per year. James told ESPN he plans to provide this for 1,100 kids, which would cost his foundation a total of $41.8 million at the school's current rates.

It's the latest example of James, who often refers to himself "as just a kid from Akron," giving back to a community that helped raise him.

"It's the reason I do what I do," said James, who announced the program Thursday while hosting an event for students at Cedar Point Amusement Park. "These students have big dreams, and I'm happy to do everything I can to help them get there. They're going to have to earn it, but I'm excited to see what these kids can accomplish knowing that college is in their futures."

The school and the LeBron James Family Foundation are still finalizing the criteria for the scholarships. The students will have to graduate high school within Akron's public school system and achieve standard testing requirements as well as fulfill a community service obligation.

James has had a long-standing relationship with the university. As his celebrity soared in high school, James played many game on the school's campus and the four-time MVP deepened his connection with Akron soon after he turned professional.

"It means so much because, as a kid growing up in the inner city and a lot of African-American kids, you don't really think past high school," said James, who bypassed college to jump to the NBA. "You don't really know your future. You hear high school all the time, and you graduate high school and then you never think past that because either it's not possible or your family's not financially stable to even be able to support a kid going to college."

In recent months, James and members of his foundation met with Akron President Dr. Scott Scarborough hoping to establish a program that would have long-term impact on the community. The result was an initiative they believe will inspire the area's youth to achieve and reach their potential.

Michele Campbell, the executive director of the LeBron James Family Foundation, said James, who grew up in a single-parent home, became visibly emotional when discussing the impact the program will have on the kids and their families.

"He has a chance to change their futures," Campbell said. "Not everybody can be an NBA superstar, so to be able to provide the framework to make your dreams come true is overpowering."

The university is renaming its education department the LeBron James Family Foundation College of Education. The first class eligible for the scholarships will graduate in 2021.

The scholarship program was welcomed, positive news for Akron, which announced $40 million in widespread cuts — including the loss of the baseball team — this summer due to financial troubles.

"Every institution goes has to go through an adjustment from time to time and you look at what you've funded in the past and you look at the things that are new opportunities and new initiatives for the future and this fits in our sweet spot," he said. "This is a program that focuses on the local area. This is a program that rewards earning your way into college. I think LeBron's philosophy is that things are earned not given and that aligns well with our emphasis on experience and learning and career service and education.

"We're excited about this and it does represent what the university wants to be about in the future. In the end, this is a university that makes students of all ages dreams come true, so this seems to fit nicely with what LeBron wants for his kids and what we want for the university."

So much good in this.

The part I italicized and underlined shows me he "gets it". If a kid knows he/she is not going to college because their family can't afford it, they'll do just enough to graduate high school, because that's the best they can do. Give them a shot at college, and all of sudden their effort and performance increases.

Should see more of that this year, the plan is to get him more minutes at the 4...

This is a double edge sword to me.

I feel his best mismatch for LeBron is at pf, but I also feel he takes a beating as a pf and he is now in his 30's.

I am a bit afraid of him wearing down. I know it doesn't seem it, but he is human.

Agreed. Add to that we have an all-star PF and (eventually, apparently) another workhorse type PF and the minutes are spare at the 4.

We need to find rest for LeBron and Kevin during the regular season.....so one shouldn't be backing up the other.

With lebron at the 4 im assuming its when the second string are in so its against either the other teams stretch 4 or a bench big. Teams often match up smaller against lebron so he rarely gets banged on defensively.

the numbers with love or tt at the 5 and lebron at the 4 were really good this year so i hope they can find say 10 mins for those lineups. With jefferson they can always have him cross match and guard the 4 and keep lebron on the perimeter defensively as well

Still can't nobody tell me the dance that Danny Green is busting. C'mon, a Panini's sandwich for anybody who gets it next time I'm in town.

They believe the best mismatch is at PF as well. However, they think it will prevent him from wearing down and that he will take less of a beating. They analyzed every minute he was on the floor over and over. When he had the ball he was exerting much more energy, bouncing off people, taking bumps, getting knocked down, etc. When he played PF he had many more opportunities to rest and exerted a lot less energy getting open. Quite often it was a quick move to get open and then a pump fake or jump hook. When he did go out to the perimeter it was pretty easy to get away from a PF who wasn't used to going out there and wasn't used to being brushed off by a pick. He exerted less energy getting away from 4's than 3's. It will be situational and they likely wont match him up against any thugs who are at the 4. But they do plan on playing him more at PF. That coupled with less minutes should lengthen his career.

Another reason for doing this is that his jumper sucks. We analyzed his jumper and it's broke...it was his worst postseason ever for his jumper. His feet weren't square, his balance was off, he reverted back to fading away on a lot of shots he didn't need to. It's very easy to see for the coaches and it would be easy for Lebron to see if he worked with our coaches this summer. Instead he only works with DJ. DJ has him shooting a shit ton of shots, but he isn't using video or other tools to fix what's wrong...he's just reinforcing it. We need camp to start fast so we can show him what's up. He's such a stubborn ass at times. He's got his own trainer in Mike(he's awesome), he has his own coach in Damon(he's not)...won't let any of the real coaches work with him. So we won't have much time to break his shot down and fix it.

23% from 3FG (worst ever)
31% long jumpers (lowest since 2008)
36% midrange
30% short-range (lowest since 2007)

If LeBron's jumper is broke and he stubbornly won't do what he should to fix it, that's a frightening thing for our prospects. He cannot be in the conversation for GOAT if he can't even reliably make a mid range jump shot (much less threes).

Thankfully we have a couple of other superstars who DO have a reliable mid range game to compensate.

I'm thrilled to read this post.

Really glad the team sees those possibilities, and I have a feeling that if it truly is going to keep the wear down on LeBron, he'll be on board.

So I'm assuming we will see a lot of lineups with either Love or Tristan at the 5, and even if Love is on the floor with a center, it doesn't mean that LeBron can't operate like a 4 still, considering Love's perimeter abilities.

More LeBron on the block PLEASE. Like that video shows, he both a devastating scorer from there, and a facilitator.

Plus LeBron off the ball opens up more Kyrie / Love pick n rolls.
