Love/Wiggins Trade Revisited

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I suspect if asked a year ago: "Almost all executives believe that LeBron would never leave Miami and go back to Cleveland." Those same executives would almost all choose to work in LA over Cleveland. With the likely huge cap increase in 2 years, I think it is almost certain that he opts in to the last year of his contract. So while he may ultimately leave as a free agent after next season, it makes zero sense to not wait a year.

"If he signs a max deal [with the Cavs after this season], it would amount to roughly $94 million over five years. But if he opts into his $16.7 million for next season, in 2016 he could potentially sign a five-year max worth $155 million with the Cavaliers (or whichever team holds his Bird rights). If he wanted to sign with a different team, the deal would be worth potentially $115 million over four years."

Probably the same executives who said LeBron would stay in Miami.......

You guys gotta realize that people hate the Cavs. It gets them off when they get to say shit like this because they're mad.

Well, Broussard is a Cavs fan, so probably not the best example...

He is, after all, the guy who put the smiley face in his tweet when he found out LeBron was choosing Cleveland over the summer. I remember people here raged about it because they thought Broussard was laughing that LeBron chose to stay in Miami. Nope.

Comparing the trades probably isnt a good idea, considering Dragic is on record saying he doesnt trust the front office in PHX and wants to play in NY, LA or Miami.

It says a lot about Dragic to me that he wants to leave a team that is meshing and winning to join one of the two worst teams in the league or an over-the-hill, underachieving Heat team. Dude clearly cares more about market than winning.

I meant the execs he was talking about. Not Brussard himself

Meh, he will be hard-pressed to leave if we have success in the playoffs. Not to mention, he would have to take a pay cut a la D12 did when he left LA and I doubt Love is THAT unhappy here.

It will be a terrible look for love to leave after all this talk about staying and how he is a cavalier.

I think people need to understand that Broussard is reporting what he's heard from other executives. These are guys who might directly benefit if Kevin Love were to leave the Cavs, or by hurting the Cavs' chemistry by getting it out there that they think he's leaving. It's also phrased by Broussard as their opinions, not anything they've actually heard.

But since, as Cavs fans, we need something to freak out about, I'll allow it. EVERYBODY PANIC!

I'll just repost a relevant quote from Bill Simmons earlier in the season:

http://larrybrownsports.com/basketball/bill-simmons-nba-teams-leaking-info-to-sink-cavs/247238

"In his latest BS Report podcast, Simmons said he believes NBA teams are going to be leaking bogus information all season long in an attempt to distract the Cavs.

“You’re going to see teams start leaking stuff that’s not true — an intentional sabotage,” Simmons said, as transcribed by Waiting For Next Year. “We’ve already seen one article this week. ‘Lakers feel that they have a chance to get Love next summer.’ Oh, OK. really? You do? You think Love’s going to jump to your 6-76 team? I think some of these teams are going to float stuff out.

“Like if this Cavs situation—you know, let’s say they’re 16-11 and let’s say it’s a little rocky and you have a couple Kyrie and Dion Waiters-type, a couple more of those moments — all these teams are going to start leaking stuff that ‘it’s not what Love thought.’ This is stuff that’s going to happen, and how Cleveland handles that is going to be really interesting.”

I've come to really despise Simmons as a talking head -- which is really too bad because I used to look forward to his columns -- but posting that quote was incredibly timely and spot-on, imo. League executives have an obvious vested interest in creating panic and turmoil here as often as possible.

Regarding Love opting out? I think it is highly unlikely just from a financial and "other options" perspective. I'd be shocked if he doesn't pick up his option.

Keep in mind that while the first 40 or so games probably didn't go perfectly according to plan for him, Love will get his first taste of playoff intensity basketball this year. And, he's doing so with two elite players by his side. It is hard for me to believe that he will experience that and then decide to go back to some middling franchise that will force him to carry the load while potentially sitting at home in the postseason ... once again. He isn't going to have really any other appealing offers from a winning standpoint unless he tries to force a S&T, which the Cavs have no reason to grant.

I'd like to believe he has moved beyond that point in his career.

Good point. You only have to look as far as Kyrie to see the difference winning makes in terms of attitude. Kyrie only played for garbage teams prior to this year, so he loves the winning. Love's teams weren't garbage, but he still never made the playoffs.

Also, if there really are underlying back/injury issues with Love that are affecting his play, the disaffection people see may really not have anything to do with the Cavs, but rather his unhappiness with his own health. And that's not something he can improve just by switching teams.
