Marreese Speights Has a Player Option

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Marreese Speights wasn't traded

I think his first couple games with the Cavs showed what he can do when he's motiviated. "Good Speights" is a skilled, physical big man who knows how to play the game. The problem is that "Bad Speights" always comes back. He's selfish, takes plays off, and has tantrums when things don't come easy. I'm disappointed that we couldn't get a draft pick for him at the dead line, but probably not nearly as disappointed as Memphis fans were when they had to give up a draft pick just to get rid of him.

But oh no, we must keep Speights because he will be our Lord and Savior of our frontcourt and ultimately our team, and for what, only 4 million a year! Interfere with our plans in 2014 offseason? Love will find a way!

Watch as this guy costs us the player the Cavs really want for a lesser player while he walks away for nothing. Fuck him.

Re: Marreese Speights wasn't traded

I think Speights may be back next season. Would be tough for him to get anymore than he's scheduled to make next season on the open market. Wouldn't have a problem keeping him around another season. At least provides depth up front and he can have big games once in a while. Don't at all believe the Cavs think he is or plan on him being a long term fit.
I was all for giving Speights a chance and seeing if maybe he could help for a while but it's become obvious the same issues and problems ares till there and he's not a player you can count on playing a major role for you.

I hear what the Speights critics are saying, and I agree with them. I wasn't expecting much from him -- inconsistent defense, bad shots on offense, general lack of energy -- but he has (occasionally) provided the team with a legitimate NBA big, which the team has sorely lacked since the Varejao injury.

Again, if the Cavs are actually trying to compete for the playoffs next year, I ask you who will they find, preferably on a contract that expires in 2014, who is better than Speights? I mean, unless you really expect Varejao to stay healthy all year or Tyler Zeller to dramatically improve. Even if TT continues to progress, he's not enough. And no you can't rely on Greg Oden either (if the Cavs sign him). And not a rookie draft pick.

So I think it may be a good thing his play has returned to its historic norm and we are hearing rumors that he may actually exercise his option, which seemed to me highly unlikely a few weeks ago.

The problem is that he's only good about 1/2 the time. That means he makes a team with a losing record better, but he makes a team with a winning record worse. He makes the team watchable right now but he's not a keeper.

So... what happened? Injury? Punishment? Just sitting him? I can't say I'm not relieved, but other than Thompson, can't say much about the others...

Re: Marreese Speights wasn't traded

Or they have decided they arenot re-signing him and want to get Jones some minutes to see how he does

Or they gave him limited minutes so he can pick up his option and be on our roster next year, because 12-15 minutes can't give him bigger contract than what he would have here if he pick up his option. Maybe that was plan because we couldn't trade him before trade deadline.

Or maybe Kevin Jones was part of Tankapalooza.

Re: Marreese Speights wasn't traded

Even though it doesn't appear Jones is doing much or playing that well when he's on the court, the Cavs seem to have played pretty well when he is out there. I know it's too small a sample size but his +/- was +10 against Boston and +16 against Orlando. I don't see him as a piece for the future but these numbers are somewhat interesting.

I was hopeful Speights might turn it around a little when he got here and was given some consistent minutes but he's still what he always was.

He plays defense. I was impressed with his rotations. He got beat because he is not super fast a couple of times, but he knows where to be. I think the past 2 games have been his best. Seriously, when Mareese comes out and he comes in the defense is a 180.

Off-topic, and I should have mentioned in it the other thread: the way the Cavs have handled and developed Jones this year has been good. Lots of time with Canton, increasing time with the Cavs. Now he needs to work on his shooting every single day this summer. I don't know if he has a future with the Cavs, especially considering their draft choices, but he has gotten better this year.

If he picks up his option that makes him an expiring contract for next season?

Wouldn't it be even more likely some team will want his services next season? No long term commitment to Speights?

Yes, he would then expire at the end of 2013-2014. Hard to say on the other question. I don't think we should over-value Speights, especially with teams more reluctant to trade picks. But he would expire.

Yeah, I hear ya. Mo Speights has Drew Gooden syndrome. Every 20 games or so, he'll put up a 25-10 performance only to come back down to Earth for about another month, if not longer.

I'd think a contender would like his services, but he's doing himself a huge disservice by not bringing it every night. What sucks is that Speights can play, just not consistently. Contenders will be weary of that fact, plus contenders usually have the worst assets for us to acquire.

A non-contending team probably won't have too much interest in Speights either, they're not going to give up anything significant when a guy is due to become an unrestricted free agent and is looking to get P-A-I-D.

Our best bet with Speights is to package him in a 3 team deal where we can get a Wayne Ellington quality asset in return. It's not like he's a massive expiring contract either.

Sucks, we're really in no-mans land here with Speights.
