Marreese Speights Has a Player Option

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Marreese Speights wasn't traded

So... what happened? Injury? Punishment? Just sitting him? I can't say I'm not relieved, but other than Thompson, can't say much about the others...
The trade deadline passed and he was not traded to a contender. He knows how to play defense, but did not particulalrly care to do so after february. Basically the good stretch was a showcase moment. Nobody was buying, and he shut it down. I think he is a capable bench big, but chose not to bring it at the end. Maybe he decided or realized he was not part of the cavs future.. Why else would he be coming off the bench for Zeller.

About Drew Gooden: I dont think his problem was lack of effort, it was lack of BBIQ. During his cavs days he was one of the few that did not give up. I dont see that as being the same as Speights. Speights has basketball sense and is in my opinion a better player when he is interested, but perhaps more like JJ, he needs an attitude adjustment. I would have liked to have seen him traded.

If he doesn't opt out, they can trade him for a 2nd round pick at the deadline or if they hate him enough, they can buy him out.

Re: Shaun Livingston Will Soon be a Free Agent

I think the News-Herald is jumping the gun on Marreese Speights there. Only a free agent if he doesn't pick up his player option.

I don't think the Cavs will overspend on Livingston but I hope they sign him or another veteran PG to something reasonable.

Agreed. Especially after his declining minutes and play towards the end of the season. His stock in free agency may not be as high as some people originally anticipated.

Re: Shaun Livingston Will Soon be a Free Agent

Looks like the News-Herald clarified it later in the article (see the Speights thread).

God, I hope he opts out. Talk about regression. I'm not so sure he fits with what Mike Brown would be trying to go after.

I'm very much jaded when it comes to Speights.

He came here playing like a beast with something to prove. Hustled hard, very active on the defensive end and came through offensively a few times when needed as well.

Than towards the end-part of the season, Mo just looked disinterested and very lazy. I'm thinking the losses caught up to him, and played a role on him mentally.

I have this strange feeling he'll go to another team become that player that we'd expected him to be - but will be to late for us to claim..

He needs a Zbo style transformation and commitment to D. His turnstyle defense is terrible. He puts forth no effort on help D unless it is a flagrant

Re: Shaun Livingston Will Soon be a Free Agent

Speights is our enforcer when he is in attack mode......every team needs a bully he can be ours.

Speights isn't happy without lots of touches/shots. On defense , he might have heard of it, tried it and came to the conclusion it's not for him.

He and Miles play like wannabe playground ballers.

Maybe not. You have to remember that his last team needed to include a likely mid-first round pick to get rid of him.

I think disinterested and lazy with an attitude problem is the real Speights. Cavs are already his third team and each time, coaches and management come to an identical conclusion.

There's an outside chance he morphs into ZBo but everyone should remember just how rare that is: a non-lottery pick who turns into a repeat all-star. And while ZBo had attitude problems, don't forget that by his third season in the league (Speights is about to start his sixth), he was already putting up 20 & 10 a night, numbers Speights has never touched and never will. I think we can move on with minimal fear of regret.

He wasn't an expiring then, we should be able to trade him by the deadline.

Yeah I think you are right, but he could be really good. He, like CJ has a lot of talent and a good shooting touch, but he can't get the minutes to produce because he is a no D chucker. His limitations begin and end with attitude/effort
