Re: Matt Barnes Watch 2009

In a sign-and-trade only the first year of a minimum 3 years has to be guaranteed.

In terms of Szczerbiak it doesnt make sense to give him anymore than a one year deal let alone multiple years with any amount of guaranteed money beyond the first year. If he were to be part of a sign-and-trade the guaranteed first year would do fine. It isnt like there are any options out there for Szczerbiak that would be more than the first year of a potential sign-and-trade.

Re: Matt Barnes Watch 2009

i love how the notion of the mythical supersecret fat trade of nothing for a star that Danny Ferry is always working on seems to seep into every single thread.

it's like the RCF religion :chuckles:

Re: Matt Barnes Watch 2009

He has done it twice in less than a year. The Cavaliers have a potential asset to do it again in Szczerbiak so it isnt like it cant happen.

I am of the belief that history tends to repeat itself. With the potential for LeBron to leave after this season Ferry will be more desperate to make perfect moves and Gilbert will be more willing to do what it takes.

Oh, no doubt about it. We know that this is how he operates, thankfully. He has three partially guaranteed contracts to work with, if i'm not mistaken (TK, DJ and Jawad), plus a few draft picks, which can all help a team save money. It's a bit different from trading big (or biggish) expiring contracts like in the Shaq and the Mo deals, but still very useful.

What's interesting to me is that even a year ago the roster was chock full of trade candidates that people were willing ship out, while right there are only a handful of players, mostly the ones mentined above, that could be moved without much consternation. I expect that most people would want to hang on to the rookies and JJ, fans are very emotional about Z and Gibson and the starters are damn near untouchable.

Re: Matt Barnes Watch 2009

I just get the notion that Ferry's next big trade will not happen before the deadline days, if at all.

If they do sign Wally, I hope and pray it's strictly for this s&t scenario everyone speaks of. I want nothing to do with Wally playing any minutes at all on this year's version.

well, he's either gonna be desperate to make a move, or he'll wait to make the perfect one, the two things never work together. And if you watched Ferry operate, he won't be desperate. He won't make a move just to do it, see the Wally and Snow contracts for example.

Using the word desperate is just a tad desperate to me. Ferry is not desperate at all IMO. I think he and Gilbert learned a few things a few years ago when in FA they could not get who they wanted, so they seemingly got desperate and plucked up a guy named Larry Hughes. That was being desperate to me and I don't believe Ferry is anyway near that right now. In fact; I'm thinking it's just the opposite in that he's being VERY patient. I also think he has a damn good idea what LeBron's intentions are, especially considering the fact the salary cap is going to go down considerably next year. It wouldn't surprise me if LeBron has already informed Ferry and Gilbert what his intentions are so the organization can plan accordingly.

I'm sure that Ferry has an idea of what bron may do. But he needs to make a move to keep him and if he does not then we deserve to lose him IMO. If you can't build a championship team in 7 years then you do not deserve a player of LBJs caliber on your team.

That's a pretty high standard to hold someone to. There have been 5 championship teams in the last decade. Only one added a key piece via the lottery this decade (Unless you care to count Bynum). To go from worst team to championship in 7 years seems to be historically unrealistic.

Heat, Lakers (I do count Bynum lol), Bulls, Magic made the finals (Shaq), Spurs won the next season (although to be fair they got handed the GOAT PF). I don't mean to sound rushed but we need to be rushed. If LBJ leaves this year we have no championship asspirations all we have is Mo, Delonte, AV and Boobie. Screams championship core.

Edit: I guess the reason is because i want the team to be able to compete with or without LeBron on the roster. If he gets a career ending injury i do not want to go back to 2003 mode, I want to go back to 2009 mode where we made the ECF.

Re: Matt Barnes Watch 2009

Unfortunately, Danny Boy doesn't have the luxury to wait until the trade deadline to move Wally, unless he went ahead and blindly signed him to a $6-8 million dollar deal (with only year 1 guaranteed at that level) hoping to move him at the trade deadline. I just don't think Ferry will make that kind of $$$ commitment. I think he has to move Wally this summer.

Why? The Cavs are an amazing regular season team as it is. You might recall, they were the best team in the league during the last campaign, winning a team record 66 games. That was a team that started a fast-declining former all star, featured a rookie as its fourth big for most of the year and brought guys like Wally and Sasha off the bench.

Since then, the core had one more year to gel, Mo has become playoff tested and the rookies are no longer rookies. And, oh by the way, there's an upgraded frontcourt with the addition of an all star center, plus a tremendous upgrade on the bench. And that with a rookie wing that can quite possible contribute already this year.

Shaq-AV-Lebron, plus any combination of Mo, Delonte and Parker are all kinds of matchup problems for any team team in the league.

So yeah, i expect the Cavs to just destroy teams in the regular season, jumping out to a really fast start with loads of big victories -- barring injury.

Now, is this team good enough for the playoffs, to take on Boston, Orlando, the Lakers, the Spurs, etc? Maybe not. But adding someone at the deadline would leave plenty of time to integrate another player.

That said, i too hope that an addition can arrive sooner rather than later, preferably in the form of a nice PF, rather than Matt Barnes. But if it's in a few months, that's fine too.

I guess that way of thinking is fine if one believes LeBron has not made his decision. I think differently about this issue in that I truly believe LeBron's decision has already been made, even before the lowering of the salary cap. For that reason, I believe Ferry already knows as well.

I've read posts in here that bring up the idea that the Cavs would not "work as hard" to get better if they already knew LeBron was staying. I dispute that premise totally. Because I believe LeBron's decision is already made, that's also why I believe Ferry is being patient in order to better the team not only for the short term, but also for the long term. Doing so only is in the best interest for LeBron, but also for the Cavs. I just don't think LeBron would put the future of the Cavs in jeopardy by not giving the FO some insight into what his intentions are. If he knows he's staying, wouldn't keeping that info away from the FO make any decisions right now being arrived at in some sort of risk of making them in a blurry cloud? I don't believe LeBron would do that.

I agree with a post above in that Wally will be used in some fashion this summer. It's hard to say exactly how it will be done, but it will. It could be as simple of believing Wally can still help the Cavs by giving him a one year vet minimum, or as complex as a sign and trade and three team deal of some kind.
