Matthew Dellavedova

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Delly and TT are both great situational, change of pace players. If things aren't going well, you stick them in for the energy boost and increased intensity. Especially good if we're getting pushed around physically.

It doesn't always work, and it is even more situational with Delly. So, their minutes/contributions are going to vary a lot game to game. But both can be game-changers in certain situations.

Personally, with Shumpert and Smith on the roster, I think a fourth big is more of a need than another guard. LeBron already fills the duties of the point guard much of the time when he's on the court, and our guard depth is actually pretty solid right now and will only improve as Shumpert's minutes restrictions are lifted.

Agreed

i think they ran a lineup of lbj shump marion love moz last night for a little while. That could be an effective lineup in the playoffs, you can switch almost any perimeter action, great against the hawks for example

That group stood out, especially because OKC tried to go small. Blatt wisely countered small ball with gigantic but freakishly quick. Cavaliers made a run looking like the high school varsity beating up the freshman squad.

I thought Shumpert could have had a shot to take away Delly's backup PG minutes but I'm not so certain right now. He seems like he's a decent enough passer but his dribbling has looked wanting so far. He'll have to tighten up the dribble as he gets up to speed before Delly really starts worrying about losing his spot in the rotation.

Dellavedova played almost the entire final 9 minutes of the fourth quarter tonight, with various players out and the Cavs not wanting to further extend Shumpert (who played almost 30 minutes). I will not say that he effectively initiated the offense throughout the game, because no one really did that, but he got the ball to the right people in position to shoot at critical moments. He also guarded Lillard in stretches, was a defensive pest in general, and did his best to contest shots (including Lillard's final miss, which required getting free of the man he was guarding).

I thought it was a solid, if underappreciated performance. Just what the Cavs needed from him.

I know he isn't too popular here right now because most casual fans view poor shooting and scoring numbers as a reflection of a poor player period. But during the 8 game winning streak he has 24 assists to just 3 turnovers. I don't care who you are, an 8-1 assist to turnover rate is ridiculous.

I still feel the Cavs need a backup PG, one who is a bit taller and has more defense in his game.
That will be needed in the playoffs.

Delly is 6'4, good luck finding a true point guard taller. I am curious to see how well Lorenzo Brown has developed in the D league. He is a defense-first taller point guard who just signed a 10 day contract with the Wolves.

oh no, not the one player one role thinking. Regarding defense - this is a whole team thing. Love is terrible defensively for a player with his reputation and generally the help defense from Kyrie and Smith is, well, crap for want of a better word. The thing is that they can all play good D, we see it for short moments - those moments need to be much longer. The other thing is that is often SO much time wasted is getting the ball down the floor to a shooter, too much one man looking for a way to the bucket. Some of the offense gets rushed bc of that and bad shots result.

That was the Delly I loved, he did everything right, excellent effort when Kyrie was having a off night (probably tired).

He got a lot of 4th-quarter time against Portland and Minnesota. I don't think Blatt trusts Shumpert yet, although his time may come. Dellavedova was very consistent in both games, playing aggressive defense, handling the ball well, and even hitting some big shots. There are things he can't do, but when he does the things he can do, he makes a difference.
