Matthew Dellavedova

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I wouldn't say the game thread was particularly kind to Dellavedova tonight, but he again got huge minutes in the 4th quarter.

It can be scary when he is asked to create on offense, but he is one of the few Cavs who hustles on defense no matter what situation. Nice to see some long-distance shots fall as well.

I don't know if this is a better question for the Blatt thread, or somewhere else, but I wonder when (or if) Shumpert will take some of Dellavedova's minutes. Perhaps it will depend on the matchup, perhaps it's dependent on Shumpert's health, or perhaps it will happen after the All-Star Break. Perhaps it's not surprising to see extended minutes for bench players during a 5 games in 7 nights stretch. It seems apparent that Blatt trusts Dellavedova a lot for his defensive effort, and sometimes that outweighs JR's outside shot and Shumpert's level of contribution. I get scared when Shumpert dribbles the ball too.

He's hit some big shots the past two games when we really needed them.

Delly is one of my favorite players. You can fault him for whatever you like, except for how hard he works. You can be assured that he's giving it 110% whenever he's out there.

He's been a lot better and hasn't seemed as overwhelmed now that he's asked to play less minutes, do less things on the court, and doesn't have to babysit Dion. I don't think he's a lost cause...I think were starting to find s place for him to fit and contribute.

2. Sixers coach Brett Brown tells some great Matthew Dellavedova stories. He compared him to a Neanderthal last year during the preseason and has said multiple times cutting Delly from the Australian national team a few years ago was one of the hardest cuts he’s ever made in his life. He said it again tonight.

3. Brown also predicted last year in that preseason game in Columbus, before Delly had even made the team, that coaches and fans would love him for his hustle, grit, tenacity and heart. He got it half right. Cavs coaches have loved Delly for two years. Fans, however, feel otherwise. At least according to my e-mails and Twitter timeline.

4. It’s not much of a secret the Cavs are trying to upgrade their backup point guard spot. But that would mean coach David Blatt would have to stop playing Delly. Some nights he just doesn’t seem inclined to do that.

5. Blatt went with an old school lineup for the fourth quarter Monday. The three new acquisitions, the three pieces that have injected some life into the Cavs and turned their season around, all sat the bench for the fourth quarter. Timofey Mozgov and J.R. Smith didn’t play at all, while Iman Shumpert played less than a minute.

6. That left Dellavedova to play the entire quarter. Good thing, too. He scored 10 points in the fourth and went 3-for-4 on 3-pointers, including two in the final three minutes. His 3-pointer with 2:35 left was one of the biggest shots of the night and extended the Cavs’ lead to 91-83.

7. Don’t look now, but Delly is shooting the highest percentage on 3s of any Cavs player (42.4 percent). His assist-to-turnover ratio is better than 3 to 1. And he still has the trust of his head coach, who acted surprised to hear fans are tired of seeing Dellavedova.

8. “That kid deserves nothing but love and support,” Blatt said before explaining what he sees in him that he likes so much. “Mental toughness, defensive capability, hustle, makes open shots at big moments.”

9. “Delly’s primary thing is to come in and play as hard as he can, defend at a high level, get us into our offense and make the right plays,” LeBron James said. “Everything we get from him is extra.”

It's often the case that the negative feelings will be expressed the most vehemently and I suspect that Lloyd may be reporting the truth, but not all of the truth; If you get five emails and 3 say bad things then yes the majority says X...but small population makes it meaningless. There are people who watch the games for entertainment and know nothing about basketball, there are people who watch the games because they are supporting their tribe and there are people who watch games because they love the game and of course there are those who are a mix of two or all three. All will see different things, but the first and second segment always seem to be the groups that howl the loudest when things are not going well.

Yep
I think people are more likely to write emails when they believe someone either sucks or carves up the court. I can't see too many people bothering to write in to say someone is adequate for a role-player in a stacked team like Delly has proven to be.
Matthew Dellavedova has picked himself off the canvas in the last three weeks and there is a strong correlation between the Cavs winning streak and his return to form. Both started in LA, and fans can make of that what they will.....

The vast majority will not look past the score sheet or the past three games ... as we see in this and other threads. I find it most telling that Blatt has Delly on the floor at the end of the game.

For all the hate he gets, Delly has strung together some good games of late. He's hitting important shots and generally playing pretty well.

Um... reposted for emphasis.

I had to look it up. I didn't believe it. A full percentage and a half above Kyrie too. And that's on 2.5 taken per game. That's not nothin'.

The other thing I learned looking that up: We have several players who are fantastic 3 point shooters shooting criminally below their averages. Lebron, Kevin Love, Mike Miller, James Jones, and even JR Smith are all underperforming based on where they were in recent years.

When those start falling more regularly... jeez.

8 assists for the most undervalued guy on this team right now. You all act like this kid shouldn't even be in the league. He's a valuable contributor who comes off the bench and keeps the ball moving and plays his heart out. All the while making like 800K per year.

You act like 800k in the real word isnt allot of money.

I think Luke Siciri has summed things up perfectly.
Interesting that he is shooting at 46% and an impressive 50% from beyond the arc over the 11 game streak. He has been fulfilling his role really well with these reduced minutes and his numbers are impressive.
In all fairness he should be judged more on these performances than the games he was playing ridiculous 30 + minutes which was always going to stretch him.

When you're Lee making two hundo on a bad year it's not a lot of money. But for the rest of us it's a lot.

It seems to me all the talk about a backup point guard through trade doesn't necessarily mean that Delly would drop out of the rotation, but instead that Marion and Miller would receive less swing man minutes, pushing Delly to backup shooting guard.
