Mike Pettine

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
...so when Jim Harbaugh is out as 49ers coach at the end of the year, what are the odds Pettine gets canned and he comes here? There was mutual interest in the offseason, so the usual cavaet of 'why woule come here?' doesn't totally apply. Could you see Jimmy canning Pettine- especially if the team ends up sub.500, which is a probability- and giving Harbaugh whatever he wants? Just curious.

Zero chance. 3 coaches in 3 years looks awful and the team has shown signs.

If the first 3 games are any indication, there is absolutely no way I'd fire Pettine.

I wasn't asking what a logical person would do, though. I am asking what a logical person thinks that an illogical owner would do. He apparently wanted Harbaugh before, and Harbaugh, even if he gets the boot/walks away, is one hell of a coach. Pettine was option F after a slew of college coaches said naw and after the team failed to get the 9ers to trade Harbaugh. I could just easily see Haslam, who overruled his FO for the sexy QB pick, being unimpressed with Pettine the way he was with option F Chud and going with the sexy pick. That was his whole goal in having the last FO fire Chud, thinking he could go get the big name. If Harbaugh shows any interest in the job, I have a feeling we see a move, deserved or not...

Based on what we've seen so far, he's nowhere close to getting fired. He's been coaching a team that has been competitive in every game so far, with a point differential of -3 after three games. All three of our games have come down to the wire. If we keep performing like that, there's no chance Pettine gets fired after one year.

I agree with you guys. I'm liking Pettine so far; his demeanor, and his team on the field. I need to see a LOT more obviously, and these games against lesser opponents should be very telling. We need to beat most of them because I think it's very clear we are better than the Titans, Jags, Raiders, etc of the world.

Harbaugh, if he becomes available, would be very enticing..but it'll depend on how the team looks at the end of the year.

I am a true believer that this team and franchise needs CONSISTENCY. Unless Pettine goes like 1-15 (not gonna happen) or something horrible happens, I think he needs to stay here with his staff for the foreseeable future. I'm talking like 4-5 years, minimum, again barring anything ridiculous happening.

Agreed. We really need to give a coaching staff and front office some time to actually build something. We can't keep blowing it up every two years and expect to ever get anywhere.

The front office trying to swing another coaching change would be a site to behold, that much is sure.

I don't see any way they attempt to do it, though.

I truly think we'd have found success already if we hadn't blown it up so many times. I think one of these coaches we deemed "shitty" would have learned enough on the job and turned it around by now.

Browns need to stop expecting to hire a guy and go 13-3 the next year.

We've also seen numerous cases where a dumb coach gets his teams to winning records. There are plenty of mediocre coaches in the NFL who do it every year.

if the Browns finish above 10-6 I wonder if Pettine gets recognized as coach of the year

Anything less than 11-5 and we should fire him, guy clearly doesn't get it

Don't know how to embed it, but watch Pettine's press conference here:

I love when he says "These guys bought in to a bunch of no name coaches running schemes very different from what they're used to." Way too early to tell for sure, but it sure seems like the Browns *finally* nailed the hire with Pettine from a leadership standpoint. Pettine definitely nailed the hire by choosing Shanahan to come run the O, I don't think anyone can disagree with that at this point.

Thing is, it's very difficult to tell who's doing what well when you have good QB play.

Good QB play wins games and makes the o-line and receivers look good and it opens up the run game. It also makes you forget about shitty defensive performances because you end up winning the games in spite of them.

All that said, the actual play-calling itself has been aggressive and there have been some interesting gadget plays.

Looks like the full and complete canvas of candidates may have just yielded the right guy.. :chuckle:
