Mike Pettine

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
They aren't playing all that well while we're trying to win, so what does it matter? Let the young guys play, and worry about next season when you're in next season. At least we can salvage something from the last 7 weeks by getting our young guys some experience.

But we all want a QB, but still want to see what Manziel has?

I think it's obvious the Browns are going to cut ties with him. If McCown was playing bad, I'd be fine with it. It's just not a healthy message to send to a team at all.

It's like this losing mentality shouldn't be encouraged, even though we fans want them to lose out.

Guys stop playing hard, guys just develop lazy and bad habits. I don't really think we're going to win many games with either guy.

Outside playing the 49ers, who I think we'll probably beat regardless who starts at this point. I wouldn't bet the house on it, but I think that's a very winnable game for anyone at this moment, (they are playing Gabbert, God they're trying to lose badly).

Baltimore isn't good, but still a team that could and should beat us. But that's another game I guess you can say we might win.

I don't see us beating anyone else. Ben is back. We got two games against them. Both will be Ls. The Chiefs haven't been very good, but I don't see us beating them in Kansas City. And they are playing much better like a lot of us figured they would.

Seattle? Ha...

2 more wins max. I say we beat San Fran, and that's it. 3 wins will net us a top-5 pick, and we'll be in position to get a good QB prospect. We're not getting Goff no matter what unfortunately.

We shouldn't want to see this team just completely bottom out in every way.

I hope we do not win a game again all year so we can draft Paxton Lynch.

Pettine is not going to start Manziel if McCown is healthy. And who could blame him. He's coaching for his job right now, he's not thinking about the future when he might not have one for the team.

Hitching your wagon to Johnny is asking to get fired.

This is certainly true, and if Farmer/Haslam really want to see Johnny play out the season I'm guessing Pet will have to be axed.

I guess my point about playing the young guys thing is if this was a baseball team that's season went down the tubes, wouldn't you be wanting to bring some guys up from the Minors or give extended playing time to young guys were already on your roster? You can only learn so much from sitting on the sidelines. Getting in there, potentially failing, and learning from your mistakes is part of the development process, and why not let that part happen while the season is already lost?

I disagree, it shows he wasn't tuned into the game as much as he should have been. That was a pretty huge play to forget. If he knew it was 4th down at the time of the play, then there is no way he would have forgotten what down it was by the time of that interview.
Haha, dude, who cares? I don't remember what kind of porn I was looking at 15 minutes ago. Doesn't mean I didn't get the job done in the moment.

He only knows the system he learned under Rex Ryan. Pettine has only been a coach in the league not even a decade. Jim O'Neil is even worse, as he has almost no experience prior to being bumped to DC when Pettine got this job. He was a family friend, and Pettine wanted to take him along for the ride the same way Rex took him when they left Baltimore.

It's a nice sentiment, but you look at a very inexperienced first time head coach and he should have had seasoned guys around him.

Look at the resumes of our coaches now and it is striking how thin they are across the board, and it shows on the field.

Having seasoned vets doesn't guarantee success, but it helps minimize incompetence.

Pettine was wildly fortunate last year to play one of the easiest schedules in NFL history, having played the 4 worst teams in the league. That rarely if ever happens, and certainly inflated his win totals and kept him from being exposed.

The defense was one of the worst in the league against that schedule, and this year without the cupcakes it has been brutal to watch because it is the same level of failure just against better competition.

The next head coach just absolutely needs to have some kind of head coaching experience beyond high school on his resume. It should be non-negotiable for Jimmy as a bare minimum starting point for the next coach.

I get your premise here and I don't disagree but get your facts right. You've already been corrected on Pettine's experience. Now you make it sound like ONeill was pulled from the local YMCA. He's had roles in college football since 2001. He's been in the NFL as a position coach going back to the new York jets under rex Ryan and Pettine. He's an experienced guy, just not in the position he's in today.

I think the most important thing with ONeill right now is that he doesn't appear to be good at this job. Left me scratching my head more than a few times with his play calls.

Still a huge fan of Adam Gase..

When prodded for defensive philosophies, Cooter emphasized "aggressively penetrating and filling the gap."
