Need a Job???

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The fact that they are able to do this in the US where the worker laws are more protective than a third world country is what shocks me. Also, The fact that it is done by a well respected company is also shocking me. But what scares is the thought - What if this becomes the new norm ? What if all companies get inspired by this and start getting more intense. Should IT people start forming unions ?

From what I've seen this kind of work environment isn't really out of the norm for some of the largest, most successful corporations. Maybe not the stories about maternity leave and such, but ridiculous hours and fairly intense working environments are generally expected.

You are not only a pussy, you are an idiot. What do you mean "fuck that?". If the employees want to "fuck that" they can quit. They aren't. They are the sum of their actions. Don't project your ideals and spectrum of work/life balance onto the thousands of employees of Amazon. In that same article, there were people who left who went back, who said they were forever changed for the better, and people who missed the intensity and being driven to fulfill their potential.

Yeah this is going to cause them to rethink how they are doing things. They are the largest retailer in the US, surpassing Walmart, but yeah, some Times article and 2 dozen Prime membership cancellations on Twitter (half of which prob won't cancel) are going to cause them to rethink what is working to perfection. LOLOLOLOL.

Jesus Christ. Why did you take this so personally? Embarrassing yourself.

What you did here was threw a bunch of arguments in here that I didn't and wouldn't make Ex that what Amazon's doing isn't helping their bottom line (it is), that it doesn't work for some employees (it does...until they burn out) and that I'm projecting my ideals and work/life balance onto them.

Did I even say what I think work/life balance should be?

No, I didn't. I said employees shouldn't be treated like cattle and that it's become assumed that they should be.

Read, dummy.

It's totally normal. And it absolutely works for the bottom line.

But that doesn't mean that you can't compromise and that there isn't a way to have a mostly satisfied workplace with high quality workers without backbiting and a hostile environment.

Amazon from a service and product standpoint is awesome. They fulfill a need in the marketplace. But that doesn't mean the widely expected hostile, high pressure workplace is positive for employees.

It all depends on the kinda work being done. Jobs that you can train people and replace people quickly, then Amazons way might work. In jobs that take years to actually be good at, then their method just doesn't work. You take a person who has done their job for 15 years; they know their job inside out. Now replace that person with a new person. Productivity drops, and when I say it drops I mean it tanks. We have a bunch of new people where I work. I've seen production rates go from 80% efficiency drop to 50% efficiency or less.(80% for my kinda work is actually pretty damn good. ) It has a bad effect on the entire facility. Also, you can only push people so hard before they stop caring. I'm running at 95% and you "NEED" 105%???? (When 80% is really good) Fuck you, go run it yourself.

Thank you, you HR fucking Oracle Sage Fucktard. Go write a book about how you would run a massive corporation. The employees are welcome to quit. But wait, instead let's take the opinions of the people who no longer work there and ask them how the work environment was.

These people can leave at any time... are they just staying because they love grabbing their ankles at ass pounding camp?

I'm making it my life's mission to get hired in Ops at @natedagg's company. I will install workplace policies that are so stringent he'll be shitting in a bucket next to his cubicle during his 3 minute bread and water lunch break.

I was speaking more in terms of just working hours and competition, not necessarily the open hostility and other bullshit in there. The dude saying everyone he knew cried at their desk? :chuckle: Maaaybe, but it strains credulity.

But I also tend to think that former corporate employee interviews make great source material for a piece in the NYT. Some of the stuff in there is almost surely overly-dramatized. If you interviewed the former employees of any major corporation I'm positive you could find a small village's worth that would describe how horrible the working environment was. You're getting one side of the story from a lot of people who have motivation to make the company look bad. I've already seen on another forum I frequent a current Amazon employee say not to lend this article any credence.

If enough people enjoy working in that environment, they're paid well, and the company is highly successful, I don't have much of a problem with it. I have immediate family members who work in a not all that dissimilar environment and love it while being paid very well.

Well, it does tell us that there was at least one pussy crying at his desk. What a loser.

Jigo doesn't like anyone other than his leather-wearing, pot-bellied, gay biker boyfriend speaking meanly to him.

Other people - the kind who don't bleed from multiple orifices -- don't fall apart when someone speaks sternly to them.

Why are you so angry? Do you work for Amazon?

Maybe the joke is on me.
