I find The Newsroom to be a very dumb, preachy show, but it's not without its entertainment values. The characters have fun banter, even if it's totally unrealistic.
I agree with Rich, though. The show is basically just Sorkin's Soapbox, but he kind of undermines his own point by only analyzing everything with a year of hindsight rather than tackling modern news stories. It's easy to point out what everyone got wrong when you have over a year to pick them apart. What I find really funny, though, is that McAvoy's show is basically a serious version of The Daily Show, just less witty, clever and, obviously, timely. McAvoy himself is like the halfway point between Stewart and Colbert.
