I can't wait to see Cersei's reaction to Oberyn being the champion. He wants to kill the mountain and make the Lannisters look bad. Love that.

Balls of titanium to fight the mountain.

And it's not like he's doing it for Tyrion, he fucking WANTS to take that dude on. One of my all time favorite characters, not just from this series, but period.

Just cannot get over how perfect Pedro Pascal is for the role. Wow.

Dude just owns it. Who does the casting for this show? They need a fucking award.

Hey for all book readers who ever have questions about the show and want smart answers in a totally non-spoilery way (and also kinda relates to basketball, oddly enough), Netw3rk over at Grantland writes a Q&A, mailbag type column every Tuesday called Ask the Maester. Dude's read all the books, is smart, and is also generally hilarious.

Worth checking out:

As great as Tyrion's trial speech was the previous week, I think that has slid to No. 2 as my favorite scene in the show. As you say, the acting was just phenomenal. Oberyn's "it's just a baby" line was really the nuke going off character-wise for me. Tyrion has been seen -- even by those who like him -- as a dwarf first and foremost. It really defines who he is to a large extent. And his entire trial speech was based on that -- all the rage coming out that for his entire life, he's been viewed as a monster and a freak. A lifetime of resentment as being seen as something less than fully human comes out. And nobody stands up for him.

Then, at his lowest moment, in comes this guy he really barely knows, whom he has every reason to assume sees him no differently than the entire rest of the world. But when he says "it's just a baby" while looking right into Tyrion's eyes, he's telling Tyrion that he knows Tyrion has been wronged his entire life, that he really is just as much a man and fully human as everyone else, and that it offends Oberyn that people think otherwise. I think in that moment, Tyrion probably knew he had the truest friend he'd ever had. Absolutely heartbreaking that it took a complete stranger from another country to give him what was probably his deepest wish his entire life -- to be seen as normal.

It was just killed all around -- Pascal's delivery, Dinklage's wordless reaction. Just damn.

Gotta give credit to Martin for writing the scene, but the incredibly powerful "it's just a baby" line doesn't appear in the book, so the screenwriters should get a huge thank you for that as well. And it was directed incredibly well.

Very much agree. Additionally strengthened by the disguised "The biggest disappointment was you" line at the very beginning. It's like he's throwing this completely genuine thought at Tyrion -maybe one of the most indirectly compassionate things anyone's said about him- without actually pandering to Tyrion or really caring how he feels about it. The way Oberyn gets through the different levels of that monologue (along with Tyrion's silent expressions) was so superb that it might rank as my favorite scene that the show has done.

"And what about what I want?"

Yeah, damn again. The way Pascal delivers that line is just so full of repressed pain and anger he just became the character.

It is far deeper than that. It's not to make the Lannister's look "bad". Oberyn has pure venom intent. Everyone he hates is in one city. He even said it himself.

He's not doing this for himself, not at all.

Think about Tywin's reaction. I mean, this is like his worst nightmare because he loses either way. It's an insult that Oberyn takes up Tyrion's cause in the first place, and if he wins, Tyrion goes free with his speech of defiance still ringing in the ears of everyone who was at that trial. Tywin also knows that Tyrion surviving likely would lead to a meltdown by his sister. A free Tyrion would be a constant insult to Tywin.

On the other hand, if the Mountain wins and kills Oberyn, Tywin's hope of bringing Dorne back into the fold will pretty much be sunk for good. And Dorne will still hold his granddaughter. Tywin's smart enough to see all that, so it is a lose-lose for him.

I can't fucking wait.

Hello, my name is Oberyn Martell. You raped my sister, prepare to die.

This thread cannot die.

The thing that is cool about Oberyn is that he comes in, and he even says that he is basically itching to fuck things up. Then the king dies, and you think it is likely that he had something to do with it. Instead we find out that this guys is an opportunist. Just the fact that he didn't kill the king gave him all this credibility, which he immediately uses to his advantage to mess things up for the Lannisters.

It also shows how unlike them he is. He does not care about power in the same way. They are trying to smooth over their issues with him in the past by giving him a seat of honor as a judge. I am not sure why they did this as they know he hates them. Maybe they figure if he is in a position to rule against any Lannister they think Oberyn will choose death for him.

I was pretty sure once Brawn(sp?) wouldn't be Tyrion's champion that it had to be Oberyn. They have been great so far in saying he is the most dangerous man in the world, yet never actually showing him fighting.

Totally agree on the Pascal casting. He is awesome.
