Pluto: Childress, WCO, and the draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If we get Claiborne it would severely help the pass rush. Having two shut down corners will free up a lot more time to get to the QB for our D-Line.

The NFL is changing. Its about slot wrs and tight ends and getting the matchups in your favor. A good pash rusher will help the pass rush, not a corner.

The difference with this year is Colt McCoy is almost certainly not the answer and no one else on offense at the skill positions looked like they belonged in the league.

That's an interesting statement. You say not one skill position player looks like they should be in the league. I think we all agree that Shurmur was a travesty as an OC. We had to find a 4th running back off the street because our first 3 went down! We had the Hillis saga/distraction. We had the 2nd worst yards per carry in the NFL. It was a new system with shortened training camp. We were by far the league leader in dropped passes. The right side of the line was held together by duct tape.

Back to your statement, how is the first half of your statement even fair? How do you know a QB is not the answer if, as you say, not one skill postion player should even be in the league and all the other stuff is working against him? Seems like a perfect storm. I just think Colt still deserves an "incomplete". It just seems like some here are so erect for RG3 that they feel the need to bury Colt to ensure it happens, i dont get it. I just think it's premature.(not trying to singling you out Phils). At the least, can we let them compete?

The problem is we don't know. So Colt being a third rounder is easier to replace than if he was a first round pick.

So here is the question if RG3 is sitting there are 4 do you take him? Then part 2 of the question is this. Is Colt McCoy a franchise QB? Yes No or I Don't know.

If it is anything other than yes you have to take the QB with the potential to be the franchise guy. Otherwise you are setting yourself up for failure.

I don't get this idea that it has to be RGIII or else we will never get any chance to get a franchise quarterback ever. I have no problem with taking someone else, or better yet, trading down, if RGIII is on the board. I just don't think that we have the pieces to make RGIII successful in place now. True, it's a travesty watching Colt play right now, but I'd rather ruin some damaged goods than let our potentially franchise QB develop David Carr syndrome every time he plays the Squeelers and Ratbirds. There are QBs with potential to be franchise QBs in every draft.

My answer would be "I don't know"....the exact same answer I'd give for RG3. For me it comes down to preferring Colt AND Blackman over just RG3...or Colt AND Claiborne over RG3. If Colt isn't the answer we can address it in the next offseason, but we've still added a key piece. To swing and miss on RG3 would be a far bigger setback...could be devastating for years. Just my opinion.

But to swing and miss on a QB next year would be what? Empowering?

Its mine too. The Browns really cannot afford another setback.. Trading away picks to move up would be extremely devastating and that is why I'm not for it at all.

Eventually we're going to need to take a swing at a QB, though. Sure-fire QB prospects don't come around often (not saying RG3 is one, either), so it's not like we can just grab one whenever it's convenient. I do have faith in Griffin and think he will be able to be a good NFL QB with the potential to be a great one. If he's there at No. 4, I hope we to take him.

I don't have faith in Colt. You can usually tell what kind of QB a guy will be after three seasons, and I can't see Colt making a big jump in production next year. I think we've already seen what kind of QB he'll be in the NFL. He certainly has a role, but I think he will be the kind of guy who makes a career out of being a great backup QB (Gus Frerotte, Jon Kitna, Charlie Batch, etc.).

I also have questions about Blackmon. He is going to be a good player, but the kind of receiver we really need is one who can stretch the field. We don't have that and Blackmon doesn't bring that to the table. He is more like an Anquan Boldin type; big body, great possession receiver who can run after the catch. That is not a knock on Boldin or Blackmon; they are both great receivers. But without a deep threat, safeties can cheat a little closer and shrink the field. A non-crazy version of DeSean Jackson is what we really need.

It would probably just be one pick, #22

No disrespect, but we had the two best corners in football back in the '80s, in a different era regarding rules in the passing game, and we still couldn't get a pass rush.

If we want to improve our pass rush, we'll need to draft pass rushers more than another cornerback.

In additon, teams look for matchups now. Can two shut down corners stop slot receivers? Can they cover big, athletic pass catching tight ends? Can the cover Sproles type players out of the backfield? Its more important to have a lot of qualty corners than just a couple standouts. When the Browns get a qb, and they sure up DE and OLB then they can continuily draft dbs in the first couple rounds like the Giants. But for now its just not prudent.

That's not how I remember it.

It was awhile ago, but I always thought Peyton always had the edge because of Leaf's shaky personality/work ethic. Leaf had a rep of being a big time party guy and not the best lockerroom personality.Talent-wise they were considered close to equals, but im pretty sure Leaf bombed his draft interview with the Colts. It was kind of like Rose/Beasley of NFL drafts imo.

Honestly, you make some good points. I just feel if we can't RG3, Claiborne is likely the BPA. But I would definitely prefer an elite LB or DE over a CB at the moment. With all the holes on this team, I think QB/WR are by far the most needed at the moment. We probably won't have the chance to take Blackmon and we may get leap-frogged before we have the chance to get RG3. So I would have no problem taking Claiborne if that be the case.

Blackmon being available is almost a certainty IMO.

Kalil is going 2nd or 3rd, IMO.

For the life of me, I can't understand why St. Louis wouldn't want a blindside protector for the next 10-15 years...but perhaps that's why they're where they are at the moment. Minnesota would almost certainly jump at that chance.
