Samardo Samuels: Thoughts Observations and Projections

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I felt he was very inconsistent. He'd have a good game then disappear for the next 4.

I'm also not convinced he's playing out of position at C. Actually I'm not convinced he has a position.

There really isn't a single category that Samardo can hang his hat on. His height is poor. His foot speed is poor. His rebounding is poor. His jump shot while improved still sucks. His inside scoring is below average for a big. He doesn't block shots. He's very inconsistent. Work ethic and BBIQ are questionable. etc etc

Frankly I think Kevin Jones is going to push Sam Sam out of a job.

Samuels doesnt feel he was consistent either. but inconsistent is a far cry from "cant play" .

Per 36 even at inconsistent he is at 12 ppg and 8 rebounds per game. with 1 block and 1 steal per game. He also has a solid defensive impact when he is on the floor. Opposing teams shot 6% worse when he was on the court.

We are in a position now where we can wait around and hope a guy like Samuels pans out. He was acquired for nothing and if he gives us anything next year then things are great. If he doesn't, we will draft a replacement next year or pick someone up in the inevitable Varejao trade. Roster spots are not as precious when you suck, which we still will this year. If he gets himself into shape then more power to him.

8 reb per 36 is what got jj benched

really. it wasnt poor positioning. dropping balls. lack of attention on the court and generally lackadaisical play. JJ also had a -3.8 simple on and off and he did not have an impact defensively.

Thoughts? He sucks.

Observations? Wow, this dude sucks.

Projections? More suck.

Yeah...just don't think Samardo is an NBA player. Stat-heads will post his numbers, but he puts them up for crappy teams.

What does he do to help you WIN?

He'd have trouble making most NBA rosters.

I just don't see the upside with Samuels. He is what he is and that is a borderline NBA player. Luckily for him there are teams like the Cavs that enable him to stick around the NBA.

He's also a human fouling machine, which shows you that he isn't athletic enough to survive in the league.

Samuels needs to do what other "tweeners" like him have done and slim down and become more active...I doubt that happens.

Actually the #1 problem with JJ was that he didn't have a clue how to play team D and that never changed ... but it was his crappy rebounding rate that got him benched. 8 reb per 36 just isn't acceptable when rebounding is one of the few things you're actually expected to do.

Not to mention, but given the Cavaliers crappy shooting last season any big should have been able to pad their rebounding numbers on the offensive boards.

Samardo was 4th on the team in offensive boards per 36 and rebounding %. Andy and Tristan nearly doubled his numbers, and Harangody bested him.

But hey, he did better than Erden and Hollins. I don't think it's a coincidence they're already gone...

I like watching Samardo. I'm not picking on him, but it is what it is ...

Samuels isnt a tweener. he is a pure power forward who has been made to play center. He is a far better defender than project and is immovable in the paint. As far as his weight goes . his weight lose and conditioning is what revived this thread in the first place. He may foul often but he also draws his own fouls. thats just a byproduct of the physical basketball he plays,

Pure power forward???

Gimme a break...

He has been playing center because he can't guard PF's. He's too slow and can't elevate. These problems also plague him on offense. Which is why his shooting stats are so god awful for a guy who plays PF/C.

The only positive about Samuels is last year he was able to extend his range out to about 15 feet. Which is a good thing since can't score in the paint.

He can draw charges. I thought it looked like his jumpshot looked great the last few months. Maybe I am wrong, but it seemed like I was cringing that he was taking the shot, and then he would make them.

I thought he could thrive coming off the bench last year and I still feel the same way....in the friggin D-League.

I think he will eventually be a great off the bench player - just needs time to develop

I think Samardo will benefit from the talent upgrade on the roster. I do not want to seem as if I am making excuses for the guy, but I can see a lack of motivation when your competition is Ryan Hollins and Semih Erden.
