Samardo Samuels: Thoughts Observations and Projections

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Thoughts? - I think he's fucked.

Observations? - I noticed that he's pretty much fucked.

Projections? - In the future, he's fucked.

I think that just about sums it up.

I think Samardo has some skills to be able to play NBA level basketball but like many young players, he needs to work at being more consistent. I love how folks have annoited Jones the better player when he hasn't played one game in the league. Samardo has talent and can shoot it from up to 17 feet. Conditioning has been his worst enemy by far. If he gets that under control, we have ourselves a solid big man off the bench who can score and play a little bit of defense. (i think he was number 1 on the team in taking charges?)

I will also say this, i've heard good things about him and Tristan this off-season, so that is a positive.

His lack of lift will always make him a below average finisher around the basket unless his hook shot drastically improves. When he gets caught flat footed he really struggles. Below average rebounder at best. His midrange shot was not good last year. Basketball IQ is very questionable.

Honestly, he will not be worth the 3 years the Cavaliers will have invested in him if he makes the team.

Samardo needs to watch this.

I think Samardo will benefit from the talent upgrade on the roster. I do not want to seem as if I am making excuses for the guy, but I can see a lack of motivation when your competition is Ryan Hollins and Semih Erden.

I disagree. If Hollins and Erden are gobbling up your minutes and you're not getting motivated to beat them, even out of sheer embarrassment, you have big problems motivation-wise.

Dam, I'm about to do the best job at work today. I am so motivated holy shit lol.

I think some of you will be surprised by Samardo this season.

He's got nice post moves and quick feet. Needs to learn to use his wide body to carve out position on the boards. IQ is very suspect indeed.

In a good or bad way? :chuckles:

It's a contract year, it's a full season, we are still a weak team, and word is that he is in shape. Samardo has ability, but the question he has to answer this year is "Does he belong in the NBA?" if he plays to his potential, he has the opportunity to get a real contract next year. We're not talking Larry Johnson money, but we might be talking Alonzo Gee money. We may or may not keep him, but if he plays well, we would at least get a second round pick for him...

I read this SI article on post play, which finished with this tidbit about Samuels:

And finally: Cleveland’s Samardo Samuels has pulled off a most improbable double, ranking as the least efficient post-up player in the sample in back-to-back seasons. Samuels shot 29 percent from the post in 2010-11 and 31 percent last season, and his turnover rate was sky high in both campaigns. Samuels, a bulky sort during those two years, looks the part of a low-to-the-ground force with a soft touch, but the numbers don’t bear it out. The 23-year-old showed up at summer league in Las Vegas looking at least 25 pounds lighter, so it will be interesting to see what happens with him next season

Wow, his % on jump shots has to be better than that
