CLEVELAND, Ohio -- After a series of meetings all day Wednesday, the Cavaliers decided to offer their head coaching job to Byron Scott.
According to sources, the two sides have been in contract talks Thursday night and are moving toward an agreement.
It is a turn of events after the Cavs had two days of talks with Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Brian Shaw on Monday and Tuesday. It appeared the Cavs were moving in Shaw's direction and Shaw had been making calls to line up potential assistant coaches. Scott's agent had even e-mailed media outlets with congratulations to Shaw.
But on Wednesday afternoon, talks between the Cavs and Shaw broke down.
According to a source, it was not related to money. Shaw's agent, Jerome Stanley, had told media outlets Tuesday that Shaw was the Cavs' choice to become the next coach.
The Cavs, however, were not done with selecting a coach. Stanley's comments to the media could have caused some tension within the organization.
One of the issues the Cavs had with Shaw was that he had never been a head coach before at any level. However, they were impressed with his knowledge.
Scott, who became the team's front-runner after Tom Izzo turned down the job two weeks ago, has 10 years of head coaching experience and twice has led the New Jersey Nets to the NBA Finals. He's known for his confident leadership and strong relationships with players.
Scott has a strong relationship with Hornets' star Chris Paul, who is close to LeBron James. He has a combined record of 352-355 and 33-24 in the postseason with the Nets and Hornets.
