Shurmur and Heckert fired (ESPN)

It seems people refuse to believe Kelley will be running anything but the system he has in place at Oregon.

Brandon Weeden said so. :chuckles:

Surely if we hire O'Brien you have to think McGloin is the future bro.

It won't be identical, I keep harping on that, but he will want a mobile QB to keep defenses honest on the backside. This draft-class is not strong for the duel-threat QB's (Geno Smith isn't very mobile, EJ Manuel is too soft and inconsistent). In fact, the best QB in this draft for Kelly, based on some mobility and QB skills would probably be Landry Jones but I don't think that excites anyone.

Our QB of the future would likely need to be acquired via trade or free agency. It's rare you find a guy like RGIII who runs as well as he does with the ability to throw from the pocket.

Or he would be smart enough to avoid taking non prospects and trying to force a system that wouldn't work in the NFL.

He's not taking QBs who have no business in the NFL like Boyd or Klein.

I'm under the belief great coaches can adapt at any level and any system. So yeah, I agree with you.

However for the sake of keeping discussion going and I can't say for sure Kelly won't try his system I asked that question.

For this draft I think you are looking at Geno Smith, Tajh Boyd, EJ Manuel, Colin Klein and Logan Thomas. You need a duel threat QB. Kelly's offense is run first and is predicated on the quarterback making fast decisions with the read-option, while taking rushing yards where he can.

Critics say Kelly's QB won't be able to handle the hits at the NFL level. There's undoubtedly some truth to that, but teams are using Newton, RG3, Kaepernick and Wilson in a similar way by having the threat of a QB run put pressure on the edge of the defense. Cam Newton is probably the ideal QB for Kelly's system, because he is big enough to take more hits than RG3. Tebow would also be a fit, but his inability to complete a pass makes him unusable.

Maybe this should be changed to the Chip Kelly thread :chuckles:. Anyway, Tajh Boyd is a beast, I'd be all in if we got Kelly as the HC and drafted Boyd to be the QB of the future. Didn't even realize he was elgible for the draft this year, thought he was a SO.

If............big if, Braxton Miller can get his mechanics together he'd be a great candidate but I'm sure he'd be injury prone.

If Chip Kelly's big plan is to bring it an all wheels, no arm QB to run a college system he knows can't work against superior defensive athletes, he won't be around long enough to draft Manziel.

Thankfully, I know he has enough intelligence to change his strategy in the NFL.

People seem to think that Oregon is an all running option team.

Mariota has had a tremendous year throwing the ball. Kelly has been transitioning into a balance offense for quite some time. It's why the Pats run a version of his system as a full spread passing attack.

Kelly never really had the luxury of a dual threat QB, guys like Darron Thomas and Masoli just can't throw consistently.

Mariotta is probably a better passer than anything.

The Pats also have Tom Brady, which makes any type of offense they run successful.

I'd consider Kelly, but I'd rather see Saban as the top choice to be honest. Although I still consider it a long shot.
