Sir'Dominic Pointer - A Cleveland Cavalier

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Every year we get really excited about someone that looked good in Summer League.

And every year, we never hear much from that someone again. Just saying...

I keep hearing about this one guy Wiggins.

Some people thought he was going to be a bust after summer league too.

Wiggins wasn't all that great in SL, despite some nice flashes of raw athleticism.

Summer league teaches you next to nothing about majority of players.

I'm still holding out hope for Will Cherry. Guy is an NBA talent. Just look at SL last year.

:chuckle:

Was pretty impressive in the summer league game I saw of him. His jumper looks decent enough, although he seems to get in his own head too much. Just let it fly.

The chances he makes the roster aren't great, but if we can't find a backup for LeBron, he wouldn't be the worst option. Maybe he could develop in to a solid rotation guy for us, which is exactly the type of thing we need to happen if we want our title window to extend.

Is Pointer big enough to defend SFs? He is listed at 190 while most SFs these days seem to be in the 210-225 range. I might have been thinking of him as more flexible defensively than he is.

Realistically, most wings aren't going to back a guy down. That's mostly exclusive to really big guys like LeBron/Melo at this point.

For the most part, so long as you can match the person you are defending's movements, you will be successful.

I mean look at Avery Bradley, and Tony Allen, they're two very good defenders, yet they give up a ton of size to most offensive players.

Edit: And you give the guy a couple of years of NBA training, weight programs, professional diets, etc, and who knows what can happen. Look at Jimmy Butler for example. He has blossomed in to a legitimate star player, and that started with defense.

Jimmy Butler was better offensively in his 3 years at Marquette than is often implied. In his 3 years, he scored 11.4, 17.1, and 18.2 points per 40 with a TS of 61%, 64%, and 59%. Very good percentages for a wing player who didn't (at the time) shoot 3s.

He was 21 when he was drafted.

Compare this to Pointer who scored 8.8, 10.3, 11.1, and 16.0 points/40 with a TS of 44%, 57%, 51%, and 57%. Pointer is 23.

I know you weren't comparing the two. I'm just pointing out the hurdles Pointer will have to overcome just to make it in the league.

Two areas where Pointer was clearly better was in blocks and steals, where his numbers at St John's were off the charts, and which David Griffin has alluded to on a couple of occasions. Some draft models suggest that college steal rate is correlated with success in the NBA, so I guess that gives him a bit of hope.

Dude seems like a long shot, but he looked good on the court when I was in vegas (though I was on drugs, so maybe my opinion has no validity). NBA conditioning should certainly get his weight up a touch. Iggy is 6'6 215lb and can defend Lebron as well as anyone, so there's some precedent for S'DP being able to defend 3s if he bulks up a bit. He certainly looks like he could carry more muscle, pretty solid looking dude in real life.

It's hard to have high hopes for Pointer considering he's already 23.

The fact that he's a wing that can't shoot is bad enough. What concerns me more is that he seems mostly unwilling to engage offensively.

If you're a passive offensive player like Pointer appears to be, you need a high end skill(s) in other aspects of the game, be it rebounding/defending/passing/spot shooting. Sir Dom seems *solid* at some those other aspects, but I don't know if that's good enough to warrant a roster spot/guaranteed contract given his offensive limitations.

Bring him to training camp, make him one of the last cuts so he can be sent to Canton, then have him work on expanding his offensive skill set.

So Christmas is gone...does that mean that Pointer has a better chance of making the roster?

I think you'll see one of Harris or Pointer on the roster.

Not both.

Don't think Christmas has any impact on Pointer's chances.
