So long, Kay Felder

Just not an NBA-caliber basketball player.

I'm sure he'd ball out at the YMCA, though.

I really hope so, but I highly, highly doubt he'll make a positive impact. Mo surely won't, so there's an opportunity, but I think we'll see another vet PG join the team via the vet minimum.

Nearly every really short guard (5'10" and under) who has played in he NBA has been a huge defensive liability, and I expect Felder to be as well. Really short guards get their time on court because of offense. The only really short guard I can remember who wasn't a defensive liability and actually a plus was Brevin Knight (5'10") and Michael Adams early in his career was decent. Spud Webb was decent for a brief time. Muggy Bogues had a respectable year here and there.

Isaiah Thomas is a defensive sieve but quite an impactful offensive player and that is why he plays. Damon Stoudamire, Earl Boykins, Nate Robinson, and Calvin Murphy were/are all defensive sieves.

It's hard for me to imagine Felder being a plus offensive player as a rookie to make up for what's likely to be an ugly defensive season and thus, it seems highly unlikely he'll crack the regular rotation or play any meaningful minutes, maybe ever. Delly was a plus offensive and defensive player for us--it's going to be difficult to replace that.

I posted the above days after he was drafted. Drafting a sub 5'10" guard in the NBA is akin to drafting a RB in the top 10 or 20 in the NFL--it's the worst pick you can make, closely followed by lumbering big whose only skill is antiquated back to the basket scoring. You DO NOT draft those players. The Browns drafted Richardson at a time when the RB position was becoming completely devalued in the NFL for good reason, but of course the Browns were behind the curve and took a RB at #3.

Start him at center.......

Change the game !!!

You root for a guy like Kay to make a name for himself in the NBA but truth of the matter is players like Isaiah Thomas are exceptions. And for a reason. I still have faith in Kay becoming a solid player in the league but he really needs to become a good 3-point shooter for that!

I agree he has to become a better 3 point shooter. I think the coaching staff realized that you can't put a small PG in the corner to shoot 3s if you want him to be the primary or secondary ball handler on the floor. He needs room to operate if the shot isn't there, almost any player with length could trap him in the corner without a double team.

I think he looked bad today because they were asking him to take 3s from the top of the key and wanted him to play off the ball for large stretches. These are clearly things he needs to work on if he is going to play with either Kyrie or LeBron on the floor.

The Cavs having a 20 point lead didn't help us see Felders strengths. There was no need to put the ball into his hands and tell him to go win the game. They were just happy letting him work on his weaknesses.

I just don't see it. I want it to happen, but when you start out physically behind everyone else, you need to be elite at other things (passing, creating, shooting, defending) and I don't see anything potentially elite about this guy.

Summer League at it's best is going to challenge young players to do what isn't comfortable in game situations. Jordan McCrae ran the point last year at this time, and he has the passing ability of a constipated burro. However, I have trouble believing the coaches told Felder to chuck threes all game. If he's working on his range, great... but a live game situation lends itself to running an offense to move the ball to the open man better or set up others off the drive, not chucking. I've never been a Felder fan, but I'd like to see him somehow push Calderon in the regular season. Get some learnin' in, short britches!

I'd like to see neither Calderon or Felder play.

There's no question in my mind that the Cavaliers thought a much better backup point guard was going to fall into their laps by now. They likely felt Deron was going to have more tread on the tires. But here we are, it's not the end of the offseason by any stretch of the imagination, they just haven't had the breaks fall their way.
