Re: Tankapalooza - Home Stretch Edition!

The core of Kyrie, TT, and Dion plus a high draft choice next year seems to be a mediocre team to me. Aside from Kyrie, TT and Dion are currently average NBA starters. Factor in the "weak" draft class next year we are in for another average NBA player.

Over-reaction.....

This is a playoff team right now with everyone healthy.

TT is a second year big that was seen as a long-term project by just about everybody coming out of that draft. Dion is a rookie who hasn't been a starter since high school, let alone been asked to be an NBA team's second leading scorer. Do you not expect either of them to progress much, if at all? If Thompson can improve as much between this season and next as he did between this season and last, we're looking at a 15-10 guy next year. If Dion can play next year slightly better than he did the second half of this one, we're looking at a guy around 17 ppg on 43-44% shooting. Factor in a high draft pick, some sort of development in Zeller, and (hopefully) a little more health from AV and this is a mediocre team as soon as next year.

Re: Tankapalooza - Home Stretch Edition!

People will hate me for this but I'm already cool with tanking one more season. These scrubs aren't winning a title without another star. 2014 draft is our best chance at getting a star if we tank.
We're not going the Charlotte Bobcats route.. We actually have had some solid drafts, including flexibility in salary cap and piled assets.

Of course the team is going to bank on the draft, but let's not forget Grant has the ammo to swing a trade or big free agent signing. This team won't just be built through the draft.

Re: Tankapalooza - Home Stretch Edition!

Can we make "I Survived The Tank 2010-2013" t-shirts after the season's over? I would seriously buy one.

mediocre, yes

being mediocore isn't tanking.

To even be considered as having tanked, you have to be awful

I think this team, healthy and with a new draft pick, would be mediocre at worse

If the team makes the playoffs next season I would totally buy a shirt that has Sessions, Jamison, and Walton sitting on top of a tank on the front and then all the players that were drafted on the back

Get on it Glen!

Re: Tankapalooza - Home Stretch Edition!

I will say, though, that if Irving in year three, Thompson in year 3, Waiters in year 2, and a highly drafted rookie cannot break out of the bottom 8 teams in the league next year (I assume that tanking again would mean at LEAST bottom 8), then I wonder if that core can ever win a championship, regardless of who they got in 2014.

I'm not saying Varejao is a core piece when the Cavs improve, but having him back, a decent rookie or two, some signings that are more about improving and less about development -- I think they can compete for a playoff spot. The championship thing is a different question.

Re: Tankapalooza - only 8 games left!!

Thinking a bit more about this years draft and who declares, I'm starting to think it may be a good thing if a couple of the top prospects decide to stay for another year(e.g. WCS, maybe Noel).

We're likely looking at a top 5 pick this year, which should be good enough to grab one of the top players. Then, next year, those players who stuck around along with all the 2014 freshmen class should mean a pretty strong group of guys will be available in the late lottery range--where we'll likely be picking.

Hopefully we can come out of the next two drafts with some solid additions to take us into the 2014 offseason/free agency.

Re: Tankapalooza - only 8 games left!!

Anyone thinking this might take another half season to build? Look at the Wizards - for all intents and purposes they started their rebuild exactly one year before us, and only now in the second half of the season are they starting to put it together.

Re: Tankapalooza - only 8 games left!!

The Wizards also drafted Jan Vesely 6th overall setting them back at least a year, maybe a decade.

This team has playoff expectations next year regardless of who we draft.

Wall was also out for a long time to start the season. I think this Wizards team would have been right there with Milwaukee had they been healthy from the beginning.

Re: Tankapalooza - only 8 games left!!

Well, the tank looks like it's in full swing now. I'm really hitting my stride. I'm pulling out all the stops for the rest of the season. Our morale is at an all-time low for the season. The energy level just looks terrible. But I guess it's all about a trade-off. As they say, "with great tank comes great responsibility." Now only if Phoenix could get a win tonight, that literally might be enough to secure our 3rd seed coming into the lottery.

I honestly think only way we can even sniff playoffs is if this team learns how to play defense at a high level, namely Kyrie. There's a reason why Carmelo wasn't made it far in the playoffs, any championship team you see has some sort of defensive stopper or great team defense. We have none and it starts with our best player. Two way basketball people, drafting Noel isn't going to fix everything.
