The Brian Hoyer thread...

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Give me a ****ing break.

Just because I said that he can move around and give you a chance, doesn't mean I said he's a fast black guy. Big thanks for placing that stereotype in my mouth. Really appreciate it.

I have watched hours of game film on tons and tons of NFL Draft prospects over the last four years. I know my young guys pretty well. Freeman and Weeden, in terms of QB skills really aren't that much different. I would much rather Hoyer. With that said, Freeman has a leg up on Weeden because he has a little more awareness and an ability to move around in the pocket, step up and keep the play alive because he has at least a LICK of athletic ability with his feet. He is not Johnny Football or Mike Vick, but, compared to Weeden, he can at least help keep something alive with this porous offensive line. If Weeden has pressure... the play is over.

Thanks again for that, though.

Anyone compared to Weeden is going to look good.

But Freeman is pretty immobile.

Perhaps you should be more clear when making an ambiguous statement like that.

Cleveland: Where QB's come to die. RIP Hoyer.

I said, "Freeman can move around and give you a chance." So you can misinterpret that all you want, but it had nothing to do with race, so I just didn't like that you suggested that. I don't bring race into my evaluations of players. But let's just leave it at that.

You're actually wrong about him being immobile, sorry. Schiano's offense has made him less of a scrambler. He isn't a running QB like Vick. But his mobility can be used to the same extent of an Aaron Rodgers or Andrew Luck (not saying he is anywhere near as good as them, but it is the same concept).

Here are his 2010 and 2012 numbers...

2010 - 16G - 68ATT - 364YDS - 5.4YPC - 2nd among ALL NFL QBs (behind Vick)
2011 - 15G - 55ATT - 238YDS - 4.3YPC - 5th among ALL NFL QBs (behind Newton, Vick, Tebow and Rodgers)

So yes, he can move around.

Anyone compared to Weeden is going to look good.

But Freeman is pretty immobile.

Perhaps you should be more clear when making an ambiguous statement like that.

What has Weeden learned from Hoyer?
You hope last night wasn't a fluke and that somehow Weeden can become a different QB than he has shown.
I'm saddened by the loss of Hoyer. I don't have any faith in Weeden.

Terrible news.

I hope he gets the starting job next year, even if we draft a QB. I'd just like to see more of what he can do.

As a pre-med student, it is medically possible to donate ligaments. Somebody contact the Browns. I'm willing to do whatever it takes.

You could just donate a sense of urgency to Weeden instead.

I would never tell him this to his face... but the fact that Hoyer is getting sympathy tweets from various media people, headlines on ESPN and NFL, it shows there was an early respect and appreciation for him. Think he has a bright future.

We just cannot have nice things. It is really that simple.

With a 12 month recovery.

The positives: Much like Hoyer, Weeden had zero snaps the previous 2 weeks, came in and put up 10 unanswered before the half (17 but I'm not counting Benjamin) then 13 unanswered points (20 but I'm not counting Wards pick 6) to close it out. His throws to Gordon & Little were gorgeous and perfectly placed. He took sacks but Buffalo has a nasty front 7. He didn't make any dumb decisions & was able to handle the negative reception from the stadium and bad hoo-doo quite well.

The negatives: He still looked like Brandon Weeden. Stared down his receivers, patted the ball, and threw behind, in front of and over WR's heads & hands.

I feel bad for Hoyer for the obvious stuff that people have talked about but who knows when he'll get another shot like he did here. Hell he may never get another opportunity like this. As long as he played well he was the starting QB the rest of the year. Now the Browns are for sure going to draft a QB so he will either be a short term place holder until the kid is ready or will be the back up. If he goes somewhere else he's going to have to go to a lousy team that doesn't have a QB and win a QB battle but still be on a bad team.

This really, really blows (I know, preaching to the choir).

But Hoyer is a great story, and while I'm wary of "Derek Anderson" hype surrounding him, he does seem to do what Norv and Co. want him to do.

Weeden really looks bad now... as this is a PRIME opportunity for the Browns I'd rather not see it get flushed on some "typical Cleveland sports" BS

Wow. Watching that play when Hoyer got hurt over and over again, and even though the guy went down that play was really, really impressive. Just watching him go from one read, to another, to another, avoid the rush and stay patient while looking down the field and finally taking what the defense gave him and running for the first. Just an excellent football play.

I really, really want this guy to win the job back next season. He has a chance to be really, really good.
