The Brian Hoyer thread...

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
True. Most athletes who tear their ACL never play again. Especially one in their twenties....

never said he wouldnt play again. Said I doubt he is on the Browns roster next year. A year out of footbal can really derail a journeyman quarterbacks career and that is exactly what hoyer is

That is why few of us respect your opinion. I've been holding back, I know about as much as Max knows. Hoyer was never 3rd string. He was more highly regarded than Sweden for a while. Now, Sweden has a chance to prove a few people they are wrong.

But I won't be watching his tryout.

I dont care what string Hoyer was. never made a reference to it.

The guy will be 29 next year. Most of the interest is from being a backup to Tom brady for 3 years where he made a total of 26 or passes. He was backup to charlie batch and only signed by the steelers because Ben and Byron were out and then picked up by Arizona where his competition was Lindley and Skelton.

Of course now he appears to be some sort of football guard because he ripped a very porous Vikings pass defense for 325 yards and put up 17 points against a Bengals team that overlooked Cleveland after pulling out a packer game they were nearly blown out of.

Hoyer is done. He will be lucky to start another game in the NFL and definitely not a part of the Browns future.

How many passes he made backing up Brady is irrelevant.

And again, his competition in other places is irrelevant. Teams have been wrong about talent before and will continue to be.

What matters is how he fits here & how well can he run & be successful in this offense. That's literally the only relevant thing to consider, especially since he was never given a legit shot to be the starter anywhere.

Hoyer has found a unique niche in the league and that is his ability to get rid of the ball fast and accurate. His arm is average but if you can hit receivers in the perfect timing they can break off huge YAC. Watching the style of Weeden and Hoyer really shows how lightyears ahead is Hoyer in terms of finding spots and reading the defense.

Cleveland benefited more from play call distribution and the return of Gordan than they did from putting Hoyer in there.

The Browns went from 103 passes to 33 runs in the first two games compared to the second to games of 94 passes to 46 runs.

the offense has also been evolving. Thats something that occurs when a team installs a new offense. Timing patterns and outlet routes take time for receivers and linemen to adapt.

Despite all the fantasizing about the Browns starting off 0-2 with Hoyer. It just wouldnt of happened. He would of encountered the same growing pains and poor pass to run ratio that Brandon dealt with and would of yielded similar results.

Browns didnt lose anything when Hoyer went down. Brandon showed that in the Bills game.

Keep in mind, we almost exclusively threw the ball in the 2nd half of the 1st 2 games because we fell behind early the 3rd Qs.

Do you know why the play calling is different with Hoyer in there? Because he is a completely different quarterback my man. Hoyer allows the offense to do things they couldn't do with Weeden. The main reason is what occurs before and after the play.

Hoyer goes up to the line of scrimage, identifies the defense, and audibles when necessary. He puts himself in a situation where he can expect certain things to happen based on the routes his players are running and the coverage shown. This allows him to go through his progression in a much faster and much more efficient way. Does he have the long ball to burn you deep? No. but he doesn't need it. I will take hitting a wide open player in stride allowing him to get YAC all day over a few deep balls that are 50-50 at best.

Weeden doesn't have this knowledge. He chooses which reciever he wants to go to on a play for some arbitrary reason, stares him down, and then throws a laser bullet pass into whatever coverage there is. He lets the defense dictate the game, Hoyer lets the offense dictate the game.

Look at what Alex Smith is doing right now. Hoyer compares very well to Alex Smith in terms of their quarterback play. Weeden has no such similarities.

Now should we not give Weeden a chance? Of course we should. He is our best option. Hopefully he can put his geriatric ego to the side and give Hoyer a call and help him work on his presnap preparation. But seriously man... watch the fucking games. Hoyer is better in all phases of the game than Weeden.

EDIT: I am all for giving Hoyer another shot next season regardless of if we draft a QB or not. I think it would be beneficial for all parties involved. The main reason.... I want to see what Hoyer can do when Dion Lewis gets back. I mean seriously. Dion Lewis would compliment Hoyer's skill set so well. I cream my pants just thinking about it.

This is on point. Being a quarterback is mostly about being able to think fast and decide correctly. Weeden probably has better tools but his decision making is slow. Too slow to be a starting qb in the league. He should have just stayed in baseball aiming at a stationary target.

The same Bengals defense that held Brady's Patriots to 6 points yesterday.

I try to be one of the more optimistic posters on these forums (or at least in the Browns section) and I've even backed up Weeden for the majority of this short season, but you are being a weird kind of positive right now.

If you don't see a difference in pocket presence, release time, or Hoyer's simple ability to turn a negative or broken down play into a positive one, you are blind. Weeden might be able to keep this team afloat if he minimizes his mistakes.

The sacks will continue to come, it's the interceptions we can't afford.

Hoyer is probably done. I really doubt he is even on the browns roster next year.

Yessir, no way the Browns can afford that 1 million of cap space that Hoyer's going to account for next season to see if he can recover over the course of a year.

This is a 27 year old QB who has up to this point been a career back up. No way that kind of player could deal with any type of uncertainty or adversity going forward.

May as well just cut him now, there are clearly going to better uses for that roster spot and cap space.
