The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread (includes spoilers)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Probably not til next season. I imagine that's how they'll lead into the king's moot.

I feel like they dropped hints that he's already dead with the talk of "Iron born have been returning home" stuff during the Moat Cailin scene.

Don't totally freak out. The quote from his editor isn't all that telling. But Martin has a big weakness and I've mentioned this before. He doesn't find brevity a useful quality in a writer. And it's a problem.

What's interesting though is Benioff and Weiss are dead set on 7 seasons. And frankly I don't see them changing their minds. It isn't just because they believe it's best for the story, but honestly it seems as though they know this is taking a toll on their bodies and minds and seven seasons is their limit.

I was always dubious that Martin would be able to finish the story in seven books. Even without all the unnecessary details he puts in, he has a metric fuckton of plot lines that are currently totally open, many of which seem nowhere near their close.

On the plus side, this means he might bring back the original title of the third book in his original planned trilogy, A Time for Wolves. I always thought that should have been the title of the last book.

After reading a few excerpts from the next books, it's pretty obvious he can't finish in 7. Far too much time being spent on chapters where very little happens in terms of the big picture. 'd be quite surprised if the books were finished before the HBO series.

I'm just resigning myself to the fact I will have to see the conclusion of this story play out on screen. Not sure I will even read the books that come afterward, to be honest. What would be the point? The books are far superior but if I already know what happens I'm just not sure I can see myself investing time in another 3000 pages of literature.

George RR Martin is doing a serious disservice to his fans. Shame. Dude could have been a fantasy legend. Still may be, but you can't deny, never finishing your series is kind of a black mark.

Yes you will, we all will.

Yes you will, we all will.

Exactly.

It'll be like how we watch the show even though we know what's going to happen. We want it visualized and experienced in another medium. I'd go to the musical if they had one.

Just in reverse... we'll read for subtle (or extreme) storytelling differences, easter eggs and added color to all of the characters and arcs.

If it becomes very clear that HBO is going to beat him substantially, GRRM may just decide to start changing around some pretty important things after the series concludes just to keep up suspense. If the series is over, but readers see stuff in the most recent book or leaked chapters that is going in a different direction, that may pique interest.

Yeah, well, I knew someone would say this but ... That is easy for you to say because you don't live my life.

I'm not a particularly fast reader. 3000+ pages is going to be a big time investment for me and if I already know what happens, not sure I'll be investing my time in that. It's a tainted series at that point, for me and I highly doubt it will maintain my interest without the suspense.

I've been spoiled to the plots of numerous books and games before that I was part way through, and ended up never picking them up again. Don't see why this would be different especially considering how fucking busy my life is going to be for the next few years. I'd probably buy them. Just not sure I'd ever finish them.

It's sad that it's come to this, but it's all on Martin. Dude's a fuck.

Yeah, I know what you mean but I'm speaking for me personally, it doesn't work that way. I LOVE seeing shit in a visual medium after I've read it. Not only are movies/TV shows way easier to pick up than books, but it's usually a lesser time investment too. If it goes the other way around, and I watch a show and therefore know what happens...but then I have to read through another 2-3 humongous fucking novels to experience it in "another medium," it just don't maintain my interest the same way the book----->TV show transition has.

I'm much more of a book guy than a movie guy -- recently donated over 200 and it didn't even make a dent -- but I completely understand there are a lot of people that aren't. Not every sees things the same way, not everyone enjoys the same things equally.

Yeah, I'm definitely all about TV shows/movies...the visual medium. The Viper vs the Mountain actually started to very slightly lean me towards the TV show over the books. But having read all the books first, I still think it is the #1 representation of this story.

Yeah, but remember, you'll have six years between each thousand pages. :chuckles:

Oh god, I laughed so hard:
