Tressel knew of gear scheme last April

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Here's Doug, the local Tressel-hater who has been clamoring for him to be fired for a while...or is it Aaron Goldhammer?

I don't know why I even read sports forums sometimes.

Yea, everyone needs to remember this.

Tressel knew about this stuff months ago but was ok with his players taking the heat while he never owned up to already have knowledge of the facts.

Basically, had it not been for Yahoo, he was going to let the players take the fall while he said nothing. Character.

I would say that Federal Government confidentiality of the emails trumps reporting it to the NCAA.

All this means is that even the guys who we think are "good guys" are probably cheaters when it comes to college athletics. Tressel is a cheater just like all of the other guys.

I don't really care though. The real problem is the NCAA and their idiotic regulations.

I find it hard to believe that a man as intelligent as Tressel didn't think of contacting any sort of legal advice in a situation like this. Honestly, outside of the players well being it would be the first thing I asked about. I really would like to know the true reason behind him sitting on this information.

Part of Tressel's suspension includes no involvement with spring practice and summer workouts.

You're really buying that nonsense?

Even then, if that's the case, he knew for sure that 2 of his players were involved and because he later said that those violations were very serious he should have went ahead and sat those two players down LAST SEASON. You know, and then claim the standard "violation of team conduct rules blah blah blah."

Don't get on me because your Dad screwed up. Yes, Tressel screwed up. Big time. I was always taught that not telling about something can be just as bad as telling an untruth to begin with. Tressel was onboard with the OSU spin December that they did not know anything until December, right? He didn't say a damn word, not even to his OSU peers. Not discussing the emails about a federal investigation with your OWN school's lawyer is stupidity at it's finest.

There are so many things wrong with all of this it makes your head spin. Yeah, I've never been a fan of Tressel as a coach anyway, but now? His character is a question to me as well.

You are correct. But the fact remains that Tressel knew about this before the date he stated he knew about it. He lied. He allowed his players to take the hit at that time. In fact, he didn't tell anyone at all. I understand the idea that he was scared because the emails said it was confidential. What's so damn stupid is that OSU has a ready made university law firm he should have told. Why didn't he? What a moron. He could have covered his ass.

Anyway; the OSU suspension of 2 games is a laugh out loud kind of thing. If the players are given 5 games then Tressel should be given at least the same. Two games? The NCAA is going to laugh as well.

I know criticizing Tressel is a big no-no in here, but this warrants it.

Even more stupid is this nonsense about confidentiality. Whoever sent him the e-mails SENT AN E-MAIL TO A NON-INVOLVED PARTY IN THE INVESTIGATION and then claimed confidentiality. When someone chooses to send an e-mail to party that is totally uninvolved in the investigation, it is quite a bit less than confidential.

My Dad? Are you serious? Get off my balls, asshole. Get a damn grip. Let's face the facts: no matter how this story manifested, you had chosen your side, and it wasn't Tressel's. I'll be surprised if anybody here disagrees with me. That's not to say he didn't make a mistake, but he was told by a FEDERAL FUCKING INVESTIGATOR to keep it confidential. I bet he was confused and scared- like he said- for his athletes, and for what the right thing to do was. Whether that was going to somebody and interfering with a federal investigation, I don't know. We don't have all the details. Do I think he committed an unforgivable crime? Fuck no. If you do, you need your head checked.

After reading the emails, I'm decidedly less optimistic about the outcome of all this than I was immediately after the presser.

Couple points:

- As far as lying goes, Tress only knew of 2 players in April. He knew of all 6 in December. Plus he never actually said he heard at that presser. Smith or Gee might've said we.

- Yahoo got tipped from a a source in the OSU Athletic Department. The NCAA already knew most of this stuff. Yahoo didn't break anything, they just forced OSU to hold a press conference while their AS is also co chairing the selection committee.

I don't think Tressel lied to anyone, so people driving the "he lied" truck need to pump the brakes.

It appears as though OSU self-reported these violations, which would mean the NCAA already knew...but someobody leaked the story to Yahoo.
