Tristan Thompson

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Tristan is 2nd in the league in Offensive rebounds which is not an empty stat.

Tristan is the only player on the team truly balling and deserves zero hate right now. Sure Sexton looks good for a rookie, but Tristan is flat out balling, getting the most out his skill set with high effort.

Yeah you can make the empty stat excuse for defensive rebounds sometimes especially when the rest of your team sucks at rebounding, but offensive rebounds is stealing those from the opposing team.

Over 5 a game, solid on his around the basket offense too, and has been playing decent positional basketball.

I actually think he has played himself worthy of his contract and maybe can get some type of asset back for him to the right team.

Just because he has been playing well doesn't mean I don't want to trade him. I think most of the vets need to go, shed salary, get picks, rebuild.

They are useless in the sense that many rebounds are uncontested, many are conceded to teammates, sometimes you are boxing out so your teammate can grab the board, etc etc.

It's a well-known fact for example that Steven Adams conceded a lot of rebounds to Russ so he could help his triple doubles.

Steven Adam (4.7 ORB + 5.5 DRB = 10.2 TRB): Offensive rebounds accounts for 46.0% of his total rebounds.
Tristan Thompson ( 5.1 ORB + 6.4 DRB = 11.5 TRB) : Offensive rebounds account for 44.3% of his total rebounds.

Adam's rebounds aren't any tougher than TT rebounds if ORB is used as a metric alone.

If you dive further for total contested rebounds:

Tristan Thompson : 5.5 contested rebounds per game (ranked 4th in the league) and his contest rebound % is 48.1
Steven Adams: 4.5 contested rebounds per game (ranked 8th in the league) and his contested rebound % is 43.9

So by any metric Tristan is an ELITE rebounder

By comparison Russel Westbrook gets 1.2 contested rebound (12.4 contest %) which is pretty low but his 72% chance percentage indicates that it clearly by design. I personally think he get way too much hate as if ANY other players could do what he does but just valiantly choose not too LMAO.

Yeah me too. I'd say he is playing about at his contract. I don't think he gets traded this year, but next year at the trade deadline he will be very valuable. We will have paid 3/4 of that years contract and he can contribute in the playoffs. He is a plug and play guy with any strong ball handler that needs a good screen.

If someone wants him for a mid to late first rounder and bad contract or young player i am all ears.

Y'all are strawmanning my post, check what I was responding to. I am in no way suggesting that his rebounds are non-value-added. It's pretty obvious that he's been a monster this year.

The Lee's stick together and are beating up on you, lol.

If I misunderstood I am sorry, I was just defending Tristan who deserves zero hate this year.

Since when is hate about "deserving"? Like, sure, he's playing fine/good/whatever. Don't care. I'm sick of watching him play. I'd rather develop someone knew. It has nothing to do with his actual performance. This has nothing to do with stats.

I just don't like him as a player. He could be the next Dennis Rodman, and I'd still not want him on my team. I'm just sick of watching him. I feel the same about all of the players from the LeBron era. I want to see new players.

No problem. I tend to get lazy and don't think about how my posts might be interpreted by others. Definitely agree that TT has been excellent this year. Except I just Google'd him to check on a stat and apparently they are trying for baby #2. Nice while it lasted.

You can't develop talent if there is no talent to play alongside. Like it or not you do need capable veterans getting playing time. Unfortunately our coaching staff has struggled with the balance. Cedi would/could have developed much better last year with more PT.

Tristan is working hard and playing ok on a shitty team, but serious...talented???

C'mon, bro. Tristan isn't helping anyone develop. If that's your argument, then you're dead wrong. Are you actually watching the games?

I think he is getting the young guys to play hard. They sure do suck, but I have not seen them quitting or hanging their heads. Maybe a little towards the end of the OKC game, but really they have continued to fight, and I do think that is partially TT's influence.

I really want to understand this better, so please bear with me. Why do some of you guys dislike Thompson? Is is because of his boisterous personality (ex: "We're the reigning Eastern Conference champions")? Or is it because he's not a talented offensive player? Or maybe he looks dumb? Or his relationship problems? Or maybe he's being paid too much ($18 million is a lot per year, has he earned it though?)?

He's not a smart basketball player, but he knows he can't shoot outside 6 feet. He knows he can't pass like Arvydas Sabonis or Nikola Jokic. But he works hard. He has a motor that's almost non-existent with the remaining Cavs players. And he also plays winning basketball.

I could see him rubbing people the wrong way. He's not really any more likable than even Draymond Green, even though they both play hard. It kinda reminds me of Big Z (the Ilgauskas version), in an odd way. There were people who hated having Z on the team, even though he was an all-star in his prime, but he played the right way (compared to Ricky Davis or Darius Miles).

So, can you help a guy out? Is there anything that can persuade the TT haters? If not, I understand. And I can't blame you guys either. It's almost like TT's the elephant in the room. Just like during the All-Star Rookie challenge in 2013...

All valid questions, but I never encountered a Cavs fan who didn’t like Big Z. I didn’t post here then(don’t know if this place existed during his peak), but I recall him as a fan favorite.

With TT I think it’s 1-bad offensive player 2-contract 3-annoying

Doesn’t help that guys like Klay, Kahwi, and Butler were taken after him, but that’s the case with many drafts.

It could be the fact that he's from Canada and doesn't have a cute Canadian accent, ehh?
