Bill Walton is the John Madden of basketball commentary, minus the insight. I had the (Mis)fortune of getting to watch him as the Clippers local commentator for years. He would refer to players like Keith Closs or Cherokee Parks as "Dominant Forces". He would talk about how the Clipps needed to sign Mo Taylor to a MAX contract to keep him because he was a cornerstone of the franchise.
I dont know if Walton has a good sense of humor, or if he is just an idiot. I think the truth is that he is an idiot with a sense of humor.
But in this case, he is half right, IMO. Marshall is needed as a shooter and zone buster. But he also needs to realize that going 1-7 from outside isnt helping the team. When the shots are not falling, he needs to pack it in and bang down low.
Comparisons to Toni Kukoc are just wrong. He was a SF who was not just a spot up shooter. He was like Diaw minus some athleticism and with an outside shot. More of a passer than a scorer, but could fill it up when needed. Horry is an OK compairison, but the guy was an athletic freak when he was young. He still can take it to the hole on occasion, but he is nothing more than a 15-20 minute a game guy anymore. To me, Marshall is more like Sleepy Sam Perkins was when he was with Seattle. A PF who can play some center. has a good outside shot, but when needed could also go down low a little. Neither at that (or this) stage in their career had much spring left in their legs (sleepy Sam couldnt jump over dime by the end of his carrer). Someone needs to send Marshall some footage of Perkins as a Sonic so he can see how a shooting PF/C gets it done right.
