Re: Wedge to be fired today?

May as well make an impact while people are still paying attention, eh?

Re: Wedge to be fired today?

Oh boy; is this true and a fact? If so, I am shocked and actually disappointed. Shapiro told the world and told the media and told Wedge they were going to give him the rest of the year. To me, that means the REST of the year. To fire the guy right now is just pathetic. I don't and didn't like Wedge as a Manager, but if this is true, we are talking about a human being with feelings. Firing the guy with a week left in the season is horrible public relations. I don't get it. What good does it do the Indians, the FO, the fans, AND Wedge by firing him now? Why not wait ONE week as you said you were going to do AND what you told Wedge?

just wow.

Wedge will not be fired today, but they will announce today that he will be fired at the conclusion of the season.

Then having a press conference like this doesn't make sense. Why not just wait for one week?

Maybe it was leaked to Wedge by someone he is close with that the Indians were firing him next week, and Wedge went to Shapiro and said to just get it over with?

More than likely, just to open the job up and start the interview process. And probably also to denounce the fact that the Dolans do not care.

Re: Wedge to be fired today?

Get him out of town. The sooner, the better.

Re: Wedge to be fired today?

I shudder to think who we have lined up for this interview process.

Re: Wedge to be fired today?

They have said for weeks that they would annouce if he was to stay on or be fired before the end of the season,no matter what he will coach the rest of the games. It was what they have planned to do and will do it at the press conference.

Re: Wedge to be fired today?

This 'story' is a load of fresh road apples.

Why would Shapiro go against his earlier stance to wait untiil after the season and fire Wedge now? It makes no sense and would be totally out of character for Shapiro.

Also- Why does no other media outlet, national or local, have the news about the press conference, much less the reason for it?

Sounds like a radio station trying to pump up ratings.

Luis Issac is being reported by one source....

<i>Cleveland Indians will fire manager Eric Wedge

By Paul Hoynes

September 30, 2009, 11:27AM

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians will announce the firing of manager Eric Wedge at a 1:30 p.m. press conference today, a source has told The Plain Dealer.

Wedge is in his seventh year as manager. The Indians are 64-92 and in fourth place in the AL Central. They have lost 20 of their last 25 games.

The Indians are scheduled to play their final two home games of the season today in a doubleheader against Chicago. They will finish the season with four games in Boston.

Wedge ranks fifth among Tribe managers with 560 victories.

Wedge is the fifth-longest tenured manager with his current club in the majors, trailing only Bobby Cox of Atlanta (1990), Tony La Russa of St. Louis (1996), Mike Scioscia of the Angels (2000) and Ron Gardenhire of Minnesota (2002).

<i>Wedge out as Indians

ESPN.com news services

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians have fired manager Eric Wedge in the final days of a terrible season.

Wedge guided the Indians to one playoff appearance in seven seasons, and this year the club fell out of contention early and is currently one game out of last place in the AL Central.

The Indians have scheduled a Wednesday afternoon news conference at Progressive Field to announce Wedge's dismissal.

Wedge will finish out the season as manager. Cleveland's coaching staff has also been informed it will not be retained, but some of the staff could be rehired by the Indians' next manager.

Two years ago, Cleveland was one win away from a World Series trip. The Indians fell to 81-81 in 2008, but were expected to bounce back and contend this season. However, a slow start snowballed and by midseason the club traded defending Cy Young winner Cliff Lee and All-Star catcher Victor Martinez to begin rebuilding again.

Boston Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell could be considered a candidate to replace Wedge, though a recent report said a clause in his contract with Boston prevents him from taking a managing job before 2011.

Farrell was the director for player development for the Indians before coming to Boston in 2007 and lives in Cleveland in the offseason.
