Windhorst Radio Show & Updates

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
23. I've heard about the Ty Lue calling timeouts thing for weeks. I'm certain I have truth on my side in this case.

I don't get this.

It's already been stated that assistants are not allowed to call timeouts. So, is Lue tricking the refs into thinking he's Blatt? Seems far fetched to me. Or, was he trying to call them, yet not getting them from the refs?

Don't buy this one from Windy.

Hey Windy 1-16-15 (second half of show)

50. I think LeBron needed the time off, that's obvious.

51. I think LeBron was not interested in getting success for David Blatt. Seemed clear from how he was acting and playing.

52. I don't know what guys are doing with their time off (LeBron in Miami story; LeBron at OSU title game story).

53. If LeBron wants to go to Dallas and then come back and play great, I'm fine with that.

54. I don't care what players do when they are away from the court.

55. I thought "The Shove" was great moment because Blatt showed fire and passion.

56. Watching The Shove in real time at the game, I had no problem with it for Blatt or LeBron.

57. Saw one huddle in Phoenix that was very strange. Guys not listening, Kyrie practicing layups. Real huddle last just 2-3 seconds.

58. I have more of an issue with that huddle in Phoenix than The Shove.

59. I think LeBron's defense down. And was down last year. Maybe bad habit developed?

60. In second half of Lakers game, he showed good effort on defense.

61. LeBron will yell at a teammate or give them a dirty look if they don't play defense. But can be a hypocrite also on defense.

62. LeBron is vocal on defense, but not as much as in the past.

63. I think Clippers will get Nate Robinson.

64. Jordan Farmar could be someone the Cavs might look at. He can hit outside shots and has some size.

65. Nate Robinson is undersized guy who can't defend. Cavs don't need more of those guys.

66. I'm for a rotation that includes less Dellavedova and Joe Harris (not wanting them to play big minutes).

67. 8 man rotation too little. Would like 9 man rotation.

68. Cavs want to get to a point where they play 8 and trust 7 (for the playoffs).

69. In Lakers game, Cavs played as they should be playing on a regular basis.

70. Mozgov can play better, and he will.

71. Blatt felt he had to win Lakers game, so Blatt played 8 and trusted 7.

72. I think Miller will get some key minutes in the time to come (talking about rotation).

73. Mozgov fumbles a lot of balls around the rim, at least with the Cavs.

74. Cavs players will have to learn where to get Mozgov the ball so he can catch it properly.

75. Mozgov frees up Kevin Love for post ups and rebounding. Mozgov is a space filler.

76. JR Smith has been just what I thought. Hot at times, poor misses at other times.

77. You don't want to be too reliant on JR Smith.

78. When Shumpert healthy, I think he starts over Smith and that likely best for Cavs.

79. Lakers have hard minute cap on Kobe now of like 32 minutes.

80. What are Lakers saving Kobe for? For next year? Why? He's at the end of the line.

81. NBA is in London to maximize NBA revenue.

82. No way NBA will reduce number of games because they will lose revenue. Not happening.

83. NBA not care about quality of games, just want to maximize revenue. So no reduction in number of games per season coming.

84. Windy's Salary Cap 101. Mozgov/Smith trades and Haywood contract next summer. In month of July, Haywood can be traded (before contract up, I think). Cavs could have done sign and trade and even add player to get more out of Haywood deal. But new rule said you must be under "tax apron" for sign and trades. With Mozgov, Smith and Andy deal it seems unlikely that Cavs able to do sign and trade under new rules.

85. Haywood out of sign and trade range (apron) means Cavs likely out of free agency game. But still Haywood can be dealt for a player.

86. Windy's Non Bold Prediction. I expect Kyrie to have a big game tonight.

87. I saw good signs from Kyrie in 2nd half against Lakers.

88. Tonight is key game to "make" road trip for Cavs. Win would be huge.

89. If Cavs get win against Clippers, could be the start of something. But can't trust this team yet.

42. If you were Kevin Love, how would you feel if Blatt were benching you and not running plays for you?

Was Windhorst just throwing out this question or was he hinting at something?

If he's hinting at something than he's trying to sensationalize this b/c on LeBatard he stated he had no read on Love at all other than Love is saying all the right things (to media)

It was more like "how would you feel?" about Love. I don't think Windy was hinting at anything more.

Sometimes when I read Windy's comments , it looks like he doesn't like Blatt either.

The way I view Windy with Blatt is that Blatt has come out and basically said things like the timeout story was bogus, and so Windy takes offense to having his own work trashed. So Windy wants to justify his own work, defend it.

Also, Windy (in my view) is a guy who takes his cues from LeBron's circle. LeBron wasn't on Blatt's side, and I think Windy's reporting reflected that stance.

But things may be changing now, as Windy himself seemed to say about LeBron's outlook now (make the best of the situation).

Here's what he said. Windy basically stated that technically it's true that assistants (and players) can't call timeouts. Meaning they are not charged with the timeouts even if they call them. But that doesn't mean that they are not actually calling them.

So what Windy is saying here is that it seems like Blatt and the Cavs are kind of putting a happy face on the situation when they didn't want this information out there, that Blatt was not the one calling the timeouts. Even though technically he is the only one that can call them, or something like that.

Windy was very strong in his defense of his reporting, saying that other teams and other observers saw this thing happening (Lue or others calling timeouts rather than Blatt) for weeks. And then Windy said he saw it for himself, so he wrote about it.

One other thing that ties in with all of this.

If you watch the postgame interviews from LeBron and Blatt

Blatt
http://www.nba.com/cavaliers/video/2015/01/16/150115BlattPostGMmov-3492292

LeBron
http://www.nba.com/cavaliers/video/2015/01/16/150115LBJPostGMmov-3492296

you can see that Blatt seems back to his old assured self. Which I think is good.

And LeBron talks about how Love (bad back) sacrificed for the team and that was a step forward for the team.

So things seem to be moving forward. Windy pointed out winning will do this, and I think we'd all agree with that.

Also take into consideration the story that Blatt took the team to a bowling alley as a surprise when the team was supposed to be practicing in LA.

http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2015/01/david_blatt.html

Put all this together, and I think finally the team may be starting to turn a corner. Many corners left probably, but you have to start somewhere.

If we beat the Clippers tonight, then I think we may be headed towards the right track here.

I think he was refereeing to Lue telling players to call time outs.

Haywood's option year (and big $ contract) starts July 1. Any deal that takes advantage of that salary number has to be completed before August 1 (that's when the money becomes guaranteed).

Because the Cavs have absorbed large salary this year, Windhorst is right in terms of it being less likely the Cavs would be able to use Haywood's contract and receive a player in a sign-and-trade. Cavs also have fewer assets to offer to sweeten a Haywood-based trade. It will be interesting to see just how much the Cavs value the Haywood contract for themselves -- arguments could be made about whether it's really worth hanging on to at this point.

If you watch the postgame interviews from LeBron and Blatt you can see that Blatt seems back to his old assured self. Which I think is good.

I think a pretty close correlation can be drawn between whether the Cavs win or lose and whether Blatt seems to have his sense of humor and sense of "himself". Watching the first 5 seconds of the interviews and you know whether they won or lost. Even how he starts them off is different. He's generally more "himself" in pregame conferences (although he has been getting pounded by the media over the last week) but the outcome of the games themselves certainly has an impact on his mood. I don't think he's less assured when they lose, but you can see his disappointment and frustration. He doesn't sound doomed or anything when they lose. I actually think he's been quite consistent throughout the year. I don't know if he's back to himself now, it's just that they won.

two things:

one, jason lloyd reported the timeout thing in his final thoughts column the night before windy did (#15, here), I trust lloyd pretty much completely to report the truth, and have verified everything before reporting it.

two, i get that assistant coaches can't call timeouts themselves - but they can indeed signal to a player to call the timeout, which means that it's technically accurate that "assistant coaches can't even call a timeout" and also that Lloyd's report is true.

I think it is more like Lue telling a player to call timeout. Sometimes a coach would tell a player to call timeout once they reach half court. So I'm assuming it is that type of thing.

Who cares if an assistant coach signals for a timeout to be called... that is common place and ESPN is running away with it like it's a source of controversy. That is laughable.

At this point I just want to see the D improve.

We have personnel limitations but schematically and adjustment wise there is alot to be desired.

For example using the recent Lakers game as an example, I'm not sure doubling Kobe and allowing so many wide open looks was a good idea. Kobe is shooting in the 30's percentage wise for most of the season and you're much better off letting him chuck away than giving up open looks around the rim to role players and bigs like Jordan Hill.

It's fine to start with the doubles but when it didn't work out the gate and Kobe was racking up assists and the Lakers were shooting like 60%, time to make an adjustment more QUICKLY. We have enough weaknesses defensively without the coach making adjustments that exacerbate the problem - same with James Jones on Markief Morris, etc (IMO).

That the type of progress we need to see WELL before playoff time and our D really needs to start progressing here soon.

I know we been playing bad but at the beginning of the season some journalist came out and said that there will be stories to try to cause a divide. I forgot who reported that. Like for instances that phoenix huddle video was just pathetic and chris Sheridan was on twitter swearing up and down that this was evidence that lebron don't respect blatt. I couldn't believe he was trying to justify this with this video. Another thing windhorst was saying was that players was talking to other players of other teams about playing to get blatt fired. What players is gone talk to windhorst about what they were talking about on the court. I know players gossip like chicks and everything but I don't believe this. Coming from a man that said LBJ wasn't coming back unless kyrie was gone and he was one of the main reasons he came back
