Question for everyone:

Would you rather be the Jets (of the past three years) or the Colts (of the past ten years)?

I don't quite understand the question. The way it's stated, I would much rather be the Colts of the past 10. But right now, ignoring the past, I think I would rather be the Jets...

You:

a) reeeally aren't sold on Colt McCoy

B) reeeally want Andrew Luck

:chuckles:

This is kind of a moot point though because unless a team who doesn't need a QB lands the number 1 overall pick the Browns aren't going to have a chance of getting him, even then it's unlikely. The real question should be do you like Colt more than Matt Barkley or some other QB who is going to climb the draft boards towards the end of the year.

Oh I agree, it wasn't a point so much as a shitty joke - Keys' Bay Area ties and his fondness for Luck are apparent was my only 'point'.

But to your question; I really don't want to have to waste a high pick on a QB this year... Unless McCoy really implodes this season (which I doubt from what we've seen thus far), I would rather use our high picks to bolster other roster holes. Fill some gaps in our depth and let Colt try an manage a team bolstered by another draft and FA next season and then make a fair evaluation. I truly believe that after this upcoming draft and FA we should start to have a fairly good image of what our team will look like moving forward. And that should allow for a true evaluation of McCoy. No more O-line or WR excuses after that.

They can either take the Colts route: Build a team around a superstar QB, with some solid players around, and perhaps win 48-38 types of games.

OR

They can take the Jets route: Build a team around a sturdy defense and a mediocre QB, with tons of playmakers, with 13-9 kinds of games.

Essentially:

You want a shaky defense and stellar Peyton Manning-led offense (Andrew Luck)
OR
You want a shaky offense and stellar defense, with Mark Sanchez (Colt McCoy) determining whether or not he kills you down the stretch.

Being completely honest, I think of McCoy as a Sanchez type of QB.

Colt has a lot to prove

Corrected. I HATE it when fans say a player has something to prove TO THEM. He has nothing to prove to you...he has to prove it to himself and his coaches.

Sorry to jump all over this, but it's always been a pet peeve. I also get annoyed when people describe a team they're not part of as "we."

I'm fairly certain I've called you out on doing this yourself in the past. I know I'm guilty of it too.

I'll be frank.

I don't know how the hell any of you can write about what Colt McCoy may or may not be right now. It's fun speculation and hearsay and complete and total bullshit, but it's really just some fun stuff.

This kid played in 8 games last year and was hurt most of the time. He had no WR's to speak of last year. He has a rookie who shows potential this year and 2 other 2nd year WR's that might end of being average. He's got right tackles that are cast offs from other teams. A rookie left guard. An all pro left tackle. A few very good TE's. A good RB. An all pro center. A decent defense that good improve to be an above average defense.

A new offensive system. A new head coach. A new defensive system.

While I fully expect the Browns as a team to get better and better as the year goes on, I do not have a clue as to how to know at this time what rank McCoy might be in the future. I don't even know if he's "the one" as I sit here right now. I hope he is. I don't know though.

I guess this thread is good in that it gives us something to write about in here, but I personally think it's silly. It's just not possible to form some kind of judgment on Colt McCoy this early into his football career with all the things surrounding the Browns.

I will say this. I believe the New York Jets would be better off with Colt McCoy right now than with Sanchez. I'd take him any day over Sanchez.

Doubt it. It's possible, but highly unlikely. And if I did, I don't recall you calling me out.

If you can find me doing it, rep.

We are fans. Fans think in regards to "their" team as WE. We aren't alone in that regard.

I do think if you asked the Indians, the Browns, and the Cavs if it's A-OK for their fans to refer to the teams as "WE", they would say HELL YES it's fine by them. I don't think they would want it any other way.

... just saying.

That is all true, but don't mistake me for someone who purposefully wants the Browns to fail. I'm still a fan. If the Browns end up successful with McCoy, great.

I've just been putting forth some areas that McCoy should be closely examined this year. I'm not certain that he is terrible in the rain and cold, but I don't want to gloss over the fact that he hasn't proven otherwise. I'm not sure that he doesn't have the physique of a starting NFL quarterback, but again, what we know is his injury history. I don't know that he is incapable of discovering what took Doug Flutie five years to learn, namely finding passing lanes when you are shorter than all of your linemen... but I know he is struggling with it right now.

If a pole assumes that his ceiling is no lower than top 15 quarterback, I'm going to bring up issues that other people, not just me, have brought up dating back to the draft.

Oh, I think the players are fine with it too. But the "we" that I'm part of is a fan-base. Not a team.

Sanchez is a system QB. Nothing more.

To McCoy, it really is hard to ballpark. He has a lot of the things you want from a QB. Smart, accurate, and all the intangibles you look for in a QB. The bad weather is a fair assessment. I think McCoy is mentally tough enough to overcome that though, and adapt. Growing up in Texas, he obviously hasn't had many winters.

I think the mentally toughest players, regardless of where they grew up, eventually adapt to whatever is thrown at them. Tom Brady was a California kid, and he still looks like a machine in the worst weather conditions out there.

Also, McCoy did not play well at the end of the season obviously. I notice his balls started floating more, and were less crisp. Remember, the kid had a shoulder injury.

Lets get an average set of receivers at least before we figure out what McCoy can do... Now we might actually have that as Mo Mass seems better in the WCO and Little has caught a few balls. Throw in Cribbs as a change of pace type receiver and maybe McCoy has something to work with this year.
