If anyone brings up Everybody Loves Raymond I will fight them.

Friends didn't make the list???

Everybody Loves Raymond is better than Friends. Let's fuckin' fight.

Honestly though, Friends has its moments and is among the biggest and most iconic shows of all time, but the last 5 or so seasons are pretty much crap and the whole show is fairly corny. It doesn't even sniff the top spot. But that's just my opinion... And I will admit they nailed the finale.

Anyway, I fuckin' love sitcoms, especially the single-cameras that emerged from the early aughts and on.

@Jack Brickman is right on the money (IMO). Arrested Development is my favorite show of all time, especially if limited to those first 3 seasons. Some shows have more heart and develop their characters better, but no show has been a better and more pure comedy delivery system. Seinfeld is #2 for me, as it has the largest library of iconic comedic moments, even if it.s

I'm surprised that no animated shows have been brought up. For me it's hard to rate them, almost apples and oranges. But if you're gonna bring Sunny and Curb into the mix, we might as well add them.

Some of the greats (to me, no particular order):
Seinfeld
The Simpsons
South Park
Cheers
Frasier
Taxi
Andy Griffith
The Cosby Show*
30 Rock
The Office
Parks and Rec
Fawlty Towers (sadly I have only seen a couple episodes)
M*A*S*H (have not seen enough of it yet)
Happy Days
I Love Lucy
Dick Van Dyke
Curb Your Enthusiasm
It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia
Peep Show
Everybody Loves Raymond
Friends (this is below Everybody Loves Raymond on purpose)
[Going through this, I realize just how white my tastes are...]

Personal loves:
3rd Rock
Community
The Drew Carey Show
That 70s Show
Scrubs
Fresh Prince
Newsradio
Living Single
King of the Hill
Bojack Horseman
Rick and Morty
Family Matters
Malcolm in the Middle
Veep
Silicon Valley
Barry

And it's not really on of my shows, but no mention of Modern Family yet.

*one of the biggest shows ever, but yeah...

Part of it is that I didn't grow up with it, but HOT TAKE TIME: Married With Children is overrated. It's a celebration of trash and does that job very well, but it's still trash.

Also, Full House to me was like my generations Brady Bunch, as iconic as it was shitty.

EDIT: HOLY SHIT I FORGOT ALL IN THE FAMILY. I won't add them to the list I'll just give them this edit to themselves.

Friends and The Cosby Show have always been shows I can watch over and over.

Not contention for best ever but How I met your mother would be higher up on the list if it wasnt for those God awful last few seasons.

The Drew Carey Show is pretty awesome, partially due to a great supporting cast and not so much because of Carey, although I like him.

We are two pages in and no one is going to try to make a case for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia? It’s tied for the longest runnning live-action comedy ever.

I love Always Sunny, but I think it's far too inconsistent to be in the running for best television comedy ever. Great show, but it has a lot of shitty episodes that I have little desire to ever rewatch. Contrast that with, say, Arrested Development, a show that I always watch every episode when I do my yearly (or sometimes biannual) rewatch. AD is just generally a better-written, more consistently funny show as well, and the humor is far more sophisticated and nuanced than Sunny's usually tends to be while still having plenty of low-brow humor as well.

Kinda shocked no Fresh Prince here. That show is the ultimate in watchable shows.

Golden Girls is a masterpiece. Imo.

I'm surprised fresh prince isn't on reruns alot more.

I think Scrubs is up there but the last season where they tried to hand it off to a new group kind of would bring it down in the rankings for me.

One of my personal favorites which I'm not sure would age well is Happy Endings. At the time it was real funny and had a cult following with 20-something year old people but not much else. I showed it to my parents and they never got any of the jokes, too many pop culture references. It was my favorite show at the time and I had alot of friends that felt the same way.

I think we have to give some leeway for shows becoming crap over the years. It's SO RARE for a show to keep high quality into their later seasons, especially for older shows. The old American model was that shows went until they got canceled, and season had to be like 24 episodes long. Insane.

Happy Days lasted for 11 seasons. Do you know which season they "Jumped the Shark?" SEASON 5.

The Drew Carey Show is pretty awesome, partially due to a great supporting cast and not so much because of Carey, although I like him.

Drew was the straight man and the side characters were all great. Seinfeld was the least funny character on his own show too.

This show also got really bad by the end.

Haven't seen it mentioned, but VEEP is a hilarious show. Top 10 funniest shows to me.

In no particular order:

  1. Veep
  2. Seinfeld
  3. Curb Your Enthusiasm
  4. The Office
  5. Parks and Rec
  6. Cheers
  7. The Simpsons
  8. Futurama
  9. 3rd Rock from the Sun
  10. Family Ties

Actually, one that I don't think has been mentioned but is probably my all-time favorite, is The Wonder Years.

Seinfeld, The Office, Golden Girls, Will and Grace, Parks and Rec, Cheers, The Cosby Show, The Brady Bunch, Arrested Development, The Simpsons and others are all towards the top for me as well.

EDIT: And for a one season stint, My So-Called Life was fucking awesome. Many people I know who were in junior high thru college at that time loved it, and most other people have never heard of it. :chuckle:

This may shock a lot of you....but I have never seen an episode of the Simpsons. I watched bits and pieces, but it never really held my attention or was that funny to me.

This is fair. AD’s most recent seasons do essentially nothing for me; however, 1-3 is a consistent chuckle fest — it’s truly a masterpiece of a show in the early goings.

I can’t genuinely argue against AD with IASIP; I was just throwing a hat in the ring. Charlie’s illiteracy has moments of brilliance but he likely has nothing on Gob tbh.
