No big in college showed an affinity for modern NBA skills. Not Ayton, JoJo, or KAT.
Not true, KAT, JoJo and JJJ all showed flashes of skills that translate well to the way the game is played in the pros. Ayton certainly didn’t, which is the reason why so many people wondered if he was the right pick as the first big off the board, much less first overall.
We need to ask ourselves what we want from a cornerstone Big man on a succesful NBA team. He needs to be able to protect the rim, defend on the perimeter and space floor. If he can do all those things it’s a slam dunk. if he can protect the rim and defend the perimeter, you need account for the lack of firepower at the other positions, especially the four.
Poor perimeter defense is a different matter though, and it is much harder to cover up and keep opposing teams from exploiting, same goes for rim protection.
Which of these areas have Wiseman shown any indication that he will excel in? He does not space the floor, which will Force the team to compensate for it at other positions. He has not shown anything on the court that points towards him being a capable perimeter defender, which makes the defense imminently exploitable. He has the physical tools you’d like to see in an elite rim protector, but hasn’t shown the production to back it up.
I just don’t see it with Wiseman. How is he any more enticing than someone like Ayton or Bagley? Both of those guys are fine players, they can certainly be productive rotation players, but I don’t think either of those guys and their respective skillsets are good building blocks to base your team on.
