Is it possible that he meant they're playing too physically and that the word thug would actually fit if that were the Case?

Cavs playing physical? No, I don't think that's possible :chuckle:

This is like sexual harassment training, it isn't about what your intent is, it is about how it is received.

The word "thug" has definitely been used as a racial term, particularly regarding athletes. There definitely is different language used for black vs white people that has racial undertones. It's the same thing as black people "looting" after a hurricane but white people "finding."

Did you read the article with quotes from Richard Sherman?

Here's another one.

So per this apology he apparently didn't say "slugs", but *meant* to say "slugs" but "thugs" somehow came out:

Hmmmm

I still don’t get why people think he meant to only call the black players thugs if he did mean thugs which he probably didn’t because why would you call one of the softest teams in the league a bunch of thugs

If they actually played like "thugs" they wouldn't have given up a 15 point lead and allowed Drummond to get 20 boards!

Personal attacks between members of RCF absolutely have to stop in this discussion. This is about John Beilein, Cavaliers head coach.

and I respecfully disagree with you, full stop.

This is like saying no one can use the word white in ANY context because it has racial connotations in some context.

Because words mean different things in different scenarios to different people doesn't mean this is racism and should not be treated as if it were, because it isn't. Looting vs finding has nothing to do with this situation. Like I said, it seems like you've been exposed to some ideas that deeply affected you and seems to be compromising your ability to see that there is no way for this particular situation to be seen as racist.

And I'm a thousand percent pushing for a move in society towards actually looking at the intent rather than someone's irrational response to actual reality. Which was done by the players, and good on them.

Bowing out

It's just dumb word for an NBA coach to use. Most NBA teams are at least 50% black and you're going to have go thru contortions to explain yourself (i.e. slug) once the word slips out. Compound it with the fact that his coaching has not been lighting the world on fire and he is old and you wonder if he's just the right guy for the job

I just want to say this isn't fair at all and you are painting someone as they "have been messed up by their experience" and you are trying to set the rules of the discourse, while Iwantakouki is talking about how words are perceived in a situation and how one group of people with different cultural experiences can perceive a situation differently.

You are saying that your perception is right and his is warped. He's saying you are missing something by not including how people feel when they hear something no matter the intent. That isn't a good faith way to talk about this subject.

Nowhere have I claimed that THIS situation is racist. I'm just explaining how the word thug has racist connotations.

I genuinely believe Beilein meant to say slugs, and even if he meant to say thugs, I don't think he intended any racist undertone.

And yeah I have no idea where you are going with all this "Like I said, it seems like you've been exposed to some ideas that deeply affected you and seems to be compromising your ability to see that there is no way for this particular situation to be seen as racist." Feels like you're trying to play armchair psychologist brah.

thug is not a racist word... its interpretation can be racist... but that is on the interpreter! Get the fuck over it! This isn't the "n word". I'm a fucking liberal voter and even I know that this is ridiculous. Intent and context matters... and in this case, Coach B meant neither. Fuck out of here...

you seem stressed

I bet $10 on a sick parlay which will win me $841 if I hit all 5.

Cavs by 11+
Cavs lead at halftime
Garland 14+ points
Kove 19+ points
Thompson 12 points or less

So I'm hoping they want to quiet down the noise around Slug Gate and get that double digit win. But not Tristan. Quiet game for you, sir.

Well, Cavs are down by 11 and TT is the leading scorer.

Why exactly are you playing parlays on the Cavs again?

I gotta make these games mean something! lol (don't worry I don't do this often). It's much more fun for playoff basketball anyway - at least 3x more predictable.

Might I suggest that the next time you throw down one of these prop parlays, that you take the over on whatever the line is for Sexton getting blocked?

I do not understand this guy substitutions. Why is he taking out the hot hand? He took Garland out as he was bringing the Cavs back.
