That sucks. You'd think people would show a little more respect given the seriousness of the subject matter, and the fact that it's is based on real events where a whole lot of people died.
Interesting sidenote to the movie. The German strategic withdrawal around which the movie was based was a real event in the spring of 1917. There was a legitimate debate at the time, and even afterwards, as to whether or not the British screwed up by not attacking during the withdrawal to disrupt the Germans when they were vulnerable, and before they were settled in their new line of defense.
So, while the story is presented as "we must stop that attack", the colonel who ordered the attack in the first place represents a legitimate point of view that it was better to hit the Germans while they were moving during the withdrawal than to let them settle in on the much stronger Hindenburg Line. Gives a slightly different vibe to Cumberbatch's character.
