Trade Deadline Day - 2020

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It's a good return.

Two previously highly thought of prospects with Naylor and Quantrill, a highly thought of prospect in Arias and some lotto tickets.

Naylor won't break games, but I love his swing and eye. I think he's more Carlos Santana than he is Franmil Reyes. Quantrill is another young starter for the organization to work with and Arias has a good bat.

It's about what you would ask for if you're looking to move Clevinger.

The Tribe and Padres have made a number of deals in recent years...it makes the most sense that this deal happened, as our front office has probably developed strong opinions on most all these guys -- looking at that system very closely. He is not the "headliner", but I think they have very high hopes for Naylor...he has been mentioned in previous trade talks...beyond Hedges and Quantrill (useful players), the rest are a very interesting assortment.

And remember that Clevinger is injury-prone and about to become arbitration expensive.

Of all the pitchers the Indians have traded recently, I think Clevinger was the most expendable, although Bauer is close.

Further, I love the Clevinger return compared to the Kluber return, although the Bauer deal remains unmatched.

we got franny from em last year - the only body they got was trammel - who they have moved after watching him play for a month and a half last season -- we got hand and cimber from em for mejia - guys covernig the pads dont think mejia will be with the pads next season -- and yet sd is still loaded with talent throughout their organization

Haul! Naylor, Quantrill, Miller will be on the team next year and producing... Arias and Cantillo are nice prospects for the future!

The Bauer deal was so good because the Padres gave up Reyes, Allen and Nova for one prospect. That was really weird and will be hard to repeat.

The Reds gave up Trammell, Moss, and Puig. One on one this deal stomps what the Reds gave up.

Don't forget the Reds traded Jeter Downs and Josiah Gray for what 4 months of Puig, 1 month of Matt Kemp, and a handful of awful starts from Alex Wood

So, all of the eccentricities that came along with Bauer and Clev are now gone. Do we have any other 'free spirits' on the roster?

PTBNL likely to be young reliever Matt Waldron. Sources.

More from East Village Times on Padres prospects entering 2020.

Owen Miller– .785 OPS (.290/.355/.430) Double-A Amarillo

Steady is how you would describe Owen Miller. His skills are not extravagant in any particular area, but he does everything well. The right-handed hitter sprays the ball all over the field with a level swing. Power is not a huge tool for him, but he still displays the ability to power the ball over the fence. Defensively, he can play all over the infield. Arm strength is a bit of a concern on the left side of the infield, but Miller is smooth with the glove.

Gabriel Arias– .809 OPS (.302/.339/.470) Single-A Lake Elsinore

Arias is a wizard with the glove and should have no problem making it to the majors on glovework alone. The right-handed swing is a bit long, but he is showing increased power, which is a great thing. The soon-to-be 20-year-old needs to walk a little more, but there is plenty to like about his upside.

Owen Miller– .785 OPS (.290/.355/.430) Double-A Amarillo

There is nothing spectacular about Miller, who is solid across the board in all areas. The right-handed swing is quick, and he uses the whole field well. Defensively, shortstop may be a stretch for the former Illinois State product, but he is competent in the area. The 23-year-old is very close to major league action.

Joey Cantillo– Low Single-A/High Single-A (10-4) 2.26 ERA/0.931 WHIP- 111.2 IP/34 BB/144 K

With a slight increase in velocity, Cantillo is turning into a terrific prospect. The left-handed pitcher works very hard and is described as someone with a chip on their shoulder. The Hawaiian native and 16th-round pick throws strikes and is blessed with an above-average changeup. 2020 will be another opportunity to see if Cantillo’s growth is for real. Expect him to start the year in Lake Elsinore.

I stole this from mlbtraderumor commentor ... but I thought this would be a huge haul ... ridiculous return ... it's not that ... I am working on something .. but I don't like it from Rule 5 perspective come next year ... I will show why under future needs ... Also, we can only add 1 more player to our 60 man pool before we lose good people (had 55 at BOY - 2 in Clev and Allen + 6 here -- assume all are on 60 pool or would be PTBNL.

BTV rates this trade as fair, with a total estimated value of $38.9M going to SD and $34.6M going to CLE. However, Arias is Rule 5-eligible, so once CLE adds him to the 40, his value will increase, closing that gap to $38.0M going to CLE.

I honestly think Naylor could become a really good power hitter if he changes his launch angle a little bit. As is he’s still leagues better than most of our outfielders and still only 23 and won’t become a free agent until 2026.

I don't hate the deal in isolation. I think the return is fine. I was hoping for a more established bat in return though.

Perhaps the Indians flip some prospects for one before 4.
