Future Roster - Trade Needs

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If a lot of teams lose money this year and are looking to cut payroll next year then guys like Hand and Santana who are free agents will not be getting the kind of offers they would have received pre-pandemic. I'm hoping the Indians might be able to re-sign one or both of them at a significant savings.

But they could just as easily decide to go with Naylor and first and somebody like Daniel Johnson in the outfield. They could replace Hand with Clase, Nelson, or bigger roles for Maton or Hill.

Which is what makes Nelson the most obvious choice for a LHRP.. not necessarily the most ready or the best. (because of the names listed as starters.. they won't all remain as starters) What Nelson does is throw strikes.. Nelson throws strikes with a low 90's FB and a swing and miss slide-piece.. He's better against minor league RHH's than minor league LHH's, so, that alone may make him more valuable with the three batter rule at the ML level...

Time will tell..
Love Nelson, besides the positives you've stated, he's been used as a multi-inning guy since being drafted (as have many Cleveland bullpen prospects).

Very excited to see what guys like him and Nick Sandlin (among others) can bring to the team in the next few years.

Do you feel comfy going into next season with Gose (who has control issues) and Nelson (with no MLB experience and only 38 innings above A ball) as your only two lefty relievers? Moss almost by age and opportunities may get moved to the pen, but its not what i would want going into the season. I want a veteran or two in that pen.

Doesn't have to be Hand, but Chafin is a local guy, who is going to sign a small contract/minor league deal with someone,, Cecil, Watson are also available. I'm just looking for that veteran to bring in to throw in the mix. Doesnt have to be as a closer, but i don't 100% trust Clase or Karinchak as a closer yet. Chafin is having a bad year, so its possible to get a minor league with a spring training invite with him.

@Derek I agree with you on the arm talent coming up like Nelson, Broom, Sandlin etc I just dont want the whole bullpen to be just the young guys without more veterans out there with MLB experience.

Right now, Wittgren is like the only guy, since if Hand signs elsewhere, not sure about Perez then Cimber is likely to be cut, are we keeping Leone over the younger talent? I for sure wouldn't and we lack MLB experience from the left side, so bringing in someone (or bringing back someone) is my priority.

hmm... wanting what?...

"..for Ralphie Parker, it was the Red Ryder carbine action, 200-shot, range model, bb gun with a compass in the stock.."

..and you want a reliable relief pitcher?.. big ask.. Agree that we lack depth & experienced depth from port siders in the pen.. They're an odd and rare breed.. The few that will be available as free agents are no more a sure thing as some of the guys we have down on the farm.. Having an RP that can go more than an inning and can get more than same handed batters out.. is the new underutilized market opportunity.. Guys who can get through the order the first time..struggle the second time and get HAMMERED the third time through the order are going to become team's best RP candidates..

Thoughts?

Can't say that I'm all that thrilled with what Sandlin brings to the hill.. nope.. can't say it..

I'm curious why you don't like Sandlin.

The organization is clearly high on him as they advanced him to AAA within a year of him being drafted.

He's been groomed as a multi-inning weapon and has had wonderful results throughout the minors. The only thing that's prevented his debut is him getting hurt (forearm strain) last year.

Might be another Kyle Crockett for all I know, but I'm at least looking forward to finding out.

Logan Allen is almost a slam dunk lock to end up pitching out of the bullpen.

Agreed.. has the mentality and his stuff plays up when he doesn't have to pace himself as a starter.. His first time through the order, command and control.. could make him a beast out of the pen.

I don't like pitchers who rely on deception over stuff.. I do like Sandlin's ability to add and subtract.. but, at the highest levels of baseball.. he would need to pinpoint his pitches as there is little margin for error.. As a MiLB'er.. his margins for error should be UUGGGE ! & they're not..

I know from some of your previous posts that you've seen more of these guys in person than the average fan, so I'm wondering if you might elaborate on your margin for error comment. Feel free to continue the discussion in the pitching thread, if you'd prefer.

As someone who follows prospects quite closely, but without being able to see them in person as much, I like that Sandlin is a bullpen pitcher with more than two offerings and that he had displayed plus command of them prior to his forearm strain last year.

I know he doesn't light up radar guns, but I'm curious about his spin rates. You don't produce results like his by accident. I personally believe that his slider could be a plus-plus pitch.

You're probably right to be wary, just because most guys don't work out at the MLB level, but I believe we have reason to be optimistic about Sandlin as a bullpen weapon for this club.

Couple Sandlin questions/thoughts...
Did he have a forearm strain or was it a fracture? I was recalling it as a fracture, but perhaps not.
I thought that it was quite encouraging to see Sandlin invited to the "60 man" roster, and glad that he is still getting quality intstuction and work in 2020. As Derek noted, it is never easy to have confidence in minor leaguers making the major league jump, but to this point I have been quite impressed with Sandlin...his repertoire and command being highlights to this point. We'll all probably get a better look in '21.

I think we bring back Santana on a 5mill type deal or so, the money wont be there for him, I don't see them bringing back Hand, I could be wrong, just doesnt make sense. He has been good this year, should get a decent offer, and typically we dont over value relievers because they are so unpredictable from year to year.

Santana is going to make a lot more than that next year whether it's here or someplace else.

If it's someplace else then I'll be very concerned about the financial state of the team.

I have definitely evolved in my thinking on this...baseball will be a financial wasteland after this season. Conspiracy theories will abound, but free agents are going to feel the brunt of it...lots of non-tenders too. We'll see of course, but these extreme measures will not be limited to the Tribe.

I firmly believe this myself

I also read this with a lot of teams. Just read an article from a Texas paper where they beleive Kluber will pitch only 1 inning for the Rangers, as there is no way they pick up his option.
