The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread (includes spoilers)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This is your reminder that, despite all of the bullshit that came with Season 8, Ramin Djawadi is a fucking brilliant composer and created one of the best soundtracks of all time.

I had a moment when I was listening to the S8 soundtrack while doing some work the other day where my motivation to re-watch GOT was kindled for a bright shiny moment. And then it was gone. But it was a really nice moment while it lasted.

I actually started re-reading the first book this month (actually listening to the audiobook - Roy Dotrice is the GOAT). Got me feeling like a sweet summer child against waiting for TWOW release. The books really are incredible. The amount of detail and foreshadowing that you can pick up on by already having knowledge of where the books go in the future is so cool.

One could make the argument that she held off knowing how dumb Jon is to ensure that Ramsey's forces were fully committed and so sure of victory that they wouldn't even bother with a screen line or pickets.

Kind of like when Bernadotte waited to launch his flank attack with 80 battalions on the French at Dennewitz until their whole army was committed against Bulow's Prussians and stacked up nicely.

And I am certain that is what the Dans were thinking!

I actually just watched the Epic History series on the Napoleonic Wars the past few days and this Bernadotte reference made me LOL. Marshal Ney >>>>

Who do you think their history advisor on Bernadotte and few others is? ;)

I also wrote the vast majority of the entry on the Battle of Dennewitz on Wikipedia. Had to dig into some old French and Swedish books to get some proper numbers. Bernadotte's battle plan was flawless. He set up his various corps on an East-West axis because all the roads in the region, save a couple went that way. All the North-South roads were far apart. So if Ney had to attack his position from the South, he'd have to take a single road. This canalizes the French and doesn't allow them to form up properly, they get fed into a battle like a meat grinder one division at a time.

Meanwhile, Bernadotte can meet any attack from the South with his entire army rapidly using the multitude of the good E-W roads. It was a classic case of fixing the enemy and then hammering them on the flank.

The irony is that Ney and Bernadotte were very close friends. After Ney's execution Bernadotte made Ney's oldest son his Aide-de-Camp.

Sudden thought that Barristan could end up being one really, out of nowhere betrayal of Daenerys. What if he believes Jon Connington? Barristan loved the hell out of Rhaegar, respects Jon Connington (I think?), and could be swayed to fight for the guy with the better claim, assuming he doesn't find out he's false.

I could totally see this -- especially if she starts showing signs of Mad-Queen and Barry starts getting PTSD flashbacks.

Tyrion has this really weird dream in ADWD and it's hard to know what we're supposed to take from it.

That night Tyrion Lannister dreamed of a battle that turned the hills of Westeros as red as blood. He was in the midst of it, dealing death with an axe as big as he was, fighting side by side with Barristan the Bold and Bittersteel as dragons wheeled across the sky above them. In the dream he had two heads, both noseless. His father led the enemy, so he slew him once again. Then he killed his brother, Jaime, hacking at his face until it was a red ruin, laughing every time he struck a blow. Only when the fight was finished did he realize that his second head was weeping.

The two heads thing could be a comparison to Maelys the Monstrous, the last of the Blackfyre pretenders (who actually had two heads).

But he's fighting alongside Bittersteel (whom I assume represents the Golden Company) and Barristan, who may represent Daenerys...or may not. And he's fighting the Lannisters.

The reason this dream gives me pause is because it seems hard to conjure up a way in which Daenerys and fAegon ally against the Lannisters. If this dream is to be prophetic (and honestly I'm not convinced it is) then it would be easier to imagine Barristan simply representing Barristan, joining fAegon's side.

Anyway, that dream has always given me trouble. Honestly it might just be a dream signaling the reader that Tyrion is very aware that his side is ultimately going to end up against Jaime's and that he's gonna have issues with that, in the end.

I feel like a Daenerys/Faegon betrothal (until she realizes he's a fake and offs him) is the direction we are headed. He already has the Stormlands, and Dorne is leaning his way. Faegon strikes a deal to put Arianne on the throne of Dorne instead of a marriage, and you get your revenge on the Lannisters.

I think the above makes far more sense in how the whole realm was allied against Cercei than whatever nonsensical hand waving the show did

Personally, I don't think you ever get the betrothal between the two. I think Aegon falls for Arianne when she comes to bring her own marriage offer, marries her instead, and then Dany obliterates both of them, possibly when she torches King's Landing.

I miss you guys. What a cluster eff that final season was. It'll never not make me angry thinking about all that nonsense.

The last couple seasons, really.

Absolutely. The final couple were bad, but that last number was an all timer. I get visibly angry now when I see a clip of a classic earlier scene. All seems wasted. "You going to die over some chickens? Someone is".

So I think this is the most commonly accepted theory and if I had to pick a direction I'd probably pick this one too.

I didn't used to feel this way for 2 reasons: 1) Because I put to much credence into what the show was doing and didn't believe that they'd leave fAegon out if he were to play so an important role in the endgame like this. I no longer believe that relying on the show for guidance is terribly helpful and 2) I would always go back to Maggy's prophecy to Cersei. When she told her about the "younger, more beautiful Queen" my mind immediately raced to Daenerys.

But upon further review, is that George's fault or my own? George has never hinted that there aren't other women in the world more beautiful than Cersei. The mind just relfexively goes to Daenerys because she's one of the primary characters, is vying to be Queen, is young and beautiful, hates the Lannisters, and we, the audience, know she's good and Cersei is evil, in the loosest sense anyway.

But now I believe it's referring to Arianne. Arianne is by all accounts also very beautiful, is vying to be Queen, and hates the Lannisters. But what really puts her over the edge imo is that she actually is in possession of the thing Cersei "holds most dear." Her child. She has Myrcella. And I can envision a lot of ways that she may "take all that Cersei holds dear." Perhaps by simply turning Myrcella against her entirely. Or something far more cruel, like killing her in front of the Gates of King's Landing.

Finally, Daenerys has more prophetic dreams and visions than any other character save Bran. She sees visions and symbols of, in no order: Jon, Rhaegar, Viserys, Tyrion, Euron (or Victarion), the Red Wedding, Aerys, Ellia, Aegon and Rhaella, the Army of the Dead, her unborn son, the burning of King's Landing and that's just to name a few.

But she never sees Cersei. Not once. Not even a reference to Cersei. I think that's telling that Cersei's final confrontation isn't with Daenerys, but with Arianne...........and then Jaime ;)
